This stunning British 18th century Old Master portrait oil painting, with exceptional provenance, is by noted artist George Romney. It was painted in 1788, commissioned by James Evelyn of Felbridge as it is of his younger daughter Anne, aged 20 years old. James was a Doctor of Law and Anne's mother was his second wife, Jane. Felbridge house, Anne's home, was in the village of Godstone in Surrey. This superb oil painting is a seated portrait of Anne, wearing a white dress with a green sash, her forearms exposed and her hands in her lap. Anne is blessed with the most wonderful long auburn curly hair and is visually stunning. Her body is partly turned away from the artist/viewer and she is slightly gazing down at us with confident, clear eyes. Anne is pictured in a landscape with a dramatic sky behind her. Romney's brushwork on her dress, hair and the background is superb. The delicate detailing of her facial features is also stunning. Sometimes Old Master portraits can be a little staid, but this one of Anne with her wild auburn hair and bold look is just magnificent. This is a fantastic example of George Romney's work and of an 18th century British Old Master with exceptional detailed provenance. Post War California artist, William Paul Morehouse studied at the California School of Fine Arts (1947-1950) receiving his BFA. Not long after graduation from the CSFA he joined the Army during the Korean War. He became a Master Sergeant and was released with a Purple Heart in 1953, at which point he enrolled in courses at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts). A transfer to the San Francisco Art Institute the following year led to his Bachelors in Fine Arts, and in 1954 he enrolled at San Francisco State University where in under two years he earned his MFA. He traveled to New York that same year to participate in the Young American Painters exhibition at the Guggenheim, along with Diebenkorn, deKooning, Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock. He soon began dividing his time between the two coasts. The following is written and submitted by Joseph Dolice, Exhibition Director of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts. This information accompanied the exhibition, "Alton Tobey," of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts October 22 to November 14, 2003. Millions of Americans have seen reproductions of the art of Alton Tobey, one of the most famous of today's living illustrators -- in national magazines such as Life, Reader's Digest and American Artist; and in public murals such as at The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City; and in Westchester where his Roots of Westchester mural is installed at the White Plains County Courthouse. Few people, however, had had the opportunity to see almost three dozen of his original paintings, including many of his portraits of famous people, at any single time or place before in history. From October 22nd through November 14th, 2003 The New Rochelle Council on The Arts, a major cultural resource for the citizens of New Rochelle and the residents of the surrounding Westchester community will present a special one-man exhibition of thirty-three of Alton Tobey's original paintings, many of which have never been publicly shown before. The show will be held in the 3000 square foot Lumen Winter Gallery in the lobby of The New Rochelle Library, the site of many major exhibitions in the past by the NRCA, such as its show of original artwork of Norman Rockwell and of Frederic Remington. Both of these artists also achieved fame mainly as illustrative painters, and had ties to the community. Alton Tobey was born in Middletown, Connecticut and received his BFA and MFA at the Yale School of Fine Arts and later taught there for four years. He has also taught at the City College of New York and has been juror for many prestigious art competitions. His work is in over 30 museums and in important government, corporate and private art collections. He has had over 50 one-man exhibitions. This superb Dutch Golden Age portrait is attributed to circle of Dutch artist Wybrand Simonsz de Geest. Painted in 1666 it is a full length portrait of a young William Stonestreet. He is holding the paw of a clipped little white dog with drapes and clouds beyond. (It was common practise to dress young boys in dresses up to the age of about 6 or 7 when they were 'britched' or wore britches). Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest (16 August 1592 – c. 1661) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter from Friesland in the Netherlands. Wybrand de Geest was born and died at Leeuwarden. He learned painting from his father, Simon Juckesz, a stained glass worker. He studied later with Abraham Bloemaert. From 1614 to 1618 he travelled in France and Italy on a Grand Tour. In 1616 he met up with Leonard Bramer in Aix-en-Provence. While in Rome he became a member of the painters' circle known as the Bentvueghels. Bay area estate sale find. Gordon Cook was born in 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington where he received his B.F.A in 1950. Cook then went on to study fundamentals and life drawing at The American Academy of Art* in Chicago. The same year he studied intaglio* printmaking with Vera Berdich at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago*. He took graduate courses and continued studying intaglio printmaking under artist Mauricio Lasansky at the State University of Iowa. In 1951, Cook moved to San Francisco. Soon after his works received the journeyman's card in International Typographical Union, Local 21. He began exhibiting his prints, drawings, and paintings at the Porpoise Gallery in San Francisco. Four years later, Cook became a charter member of the Bay Printmakers Society and exhibited in their annual exhibitions at the Oakland Art Museum for the next five years. His etchings portrayed mainly San Francisco landscapes such as the Golden Gate Park, Diamond Heights, and Lake Merced as well as flowers, especially roses. He participated in his first weekly drawing group with artist Alvin Light, Manuel Neri, Joan Brown, and William H. Brown. Cook also taught at the San Francisco Art Institute*.
