About the Item

Signed & dated: lower right 1954 Diego Rivera (Mexican, (1886 - 1957) Mexican Girl Returning from the Market Watercolor on paper, behind glass 11 x 16” Signed and dated lower right, ‘Diego Rivera 1954’ This is a strong work by Diego Rivera. The vibrant colors and Rivera’s ability to capture the distinct personality of a Mexican woman make it perhaps one of the best watercolors to come onto the market. Standing in a stone walled path with mountainous and a lake in the distance behind her, a young girl pauses mid-step to look outward at her viewer, a wrapped basket of provisions and food in her left hand, a closely gathered bunch of bright yellow flowers in her right. Her gaze is direct and proud. It is simultaneously calm and watchful, yet the squared shoulders and front facing stance suggest boldness and strength, hallmark of Diego Rivera figures. Dressed in a simple Mexican garb, from the sandals to the red skirt, augmented by the blue laced skirt, a mauve shawl rapped around her shoulders, she displays one bit of adornment, in her plain gold hoop, peeking out from her raven plaited hair. All emphasis is placed on the figures head and features, classically reminiscent of Mayan other early Mesoamerican sculpture, with large direct eyes, a softly rounded curve of the jawline, and fully sensuous mouth. Although, this watercolor does not explicitly address any of the socio-political subject matter, viewers have come to associate with Rivera’s iconic works, it is nonetheless a celebration of a Mexican woman, her beauty and strength in an everyday moment.
