Expressionist Figurative Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

My Reflection
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
I walked up to the mirror and I was heartbroken. My heart wandered, earth broken. I saw my pains, anxiety, lies, and burdens staring at me. I hated the fact that I might be blind. My reality has been bound, I realized the mirror might be deceiving; false info I am receiving. I turned to society due to my uncertainty to be a mirror and it said, you are too kind to be real, too beautiful to serve God, too smart for the Gospel, and too holy for us. You are lagging behind leaving no mark behind. Then I turned to the Word and I am reflected for who I am, not perfected for the world. I might be flawed yet there was room for correction. And it was pointing in the right direction. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Girl from Gombe
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Girl from Gombe is an original painting by Abifola Olorunlana. Olorunlana created Girl from Gombe with Acrylic on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. The Girl from Gombe is a two-portrait series about a young girl from Gombe who is trying to find balance in her personal life in a society that does not really care much about the mental health of young people. In each portrait, her bodily pose, complemented with fresh-looking green plants and every other element in the painting tells a story about all the good and bad choices that have led her to where she is; the influence of her academics, family, religion, and the friends she surrounds herself with. While she's fighting her insecurities, and facing a dilemma in her career choice, she seems to persevere in living. Whenever I look at my subject and listen to her talk, all I see is a beautiful girl who has fallen prey to what we all refer to as life: Abifola Olorunlana decided to narrate with paint on canvas as a reminder that no matter what the situation is, as long as we are alive our lives can always get better. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. "Toy Seller" Oil Painting 35" x 45" inch by Andrey Remnev ARTIST BIO: "My birth place is Yakhroma town, in the vicinity of Moscow. It is situated on high hills, from where broad Bruegelian vistas are open. The uneven terrain with significant differences of high and low; a canal between the Moskva river and the Volga; small rivers, woods and villages; a nearby ancient town of Dmitrov, which is equal to Moscow in age; ships cruising the canal and trains outdistancing them – all this I saw from my window since my early years. It was a view that embraced all the diversity of the world. This is why I can say that the impressions of my childhood and youth – beautiful nature and remarkable people – are the most important ones. In the museum of Moscow's St. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting...

The eagle, a symbol of strength, freedom, and keen observation, has been revered across cultures and throughout history. In "My Dear Lady," Bright Toh ingeniously combines the eagle's regal qualities with the elegance and vulnerability of the human form, seamlessly merging the earthly and the ethereal. One cannot help but be immediately drawn to the artwork's vibrant color palette. Bright Toh's deliberate choice of bold hues, such as royal blues, fiery reds, and golden yellows, electrifies the composition and infuses it with energy. "Dekadans" Oil Painting 35" x 25.5" inch by Andrey Remnev ARTIST BIO: "My birth place is Yakhroma town, in the vicinity of Moscow. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting of the 15th-17th centuries. My own style evolved from the ancient icon...

Speak Up
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
In "Speak Up," Bright Toh employs unconventional imagery by merging the head of a cow with a human body. This unexpected combination challenges our preconceived notions and encourages us to look beyond the surface, prompting a deeper exploration of the artwork's underlying message. The cow, often associated with docility and domesticity, takes on a new meaning as it becomes a vessel for the human form, suggesting that even the most unexpected individuals possess the potential for individual expression. The artwork's bright and lively color palette serves as a visual feast for the eyes. Bold hues, such as vibrant blues, fiery red, and vivid greens, infuse the composition with energy and captivate the viewer's attention. The oversized raincoat worn by the figure adds an element of whimsy and intrigue, symbolizing protection and shelter from external influences. It also serves as a metaphorical cloak, representing the need for individuals to find their unique voices and confidently express their ideas and opinions. "Speak Up" serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of individual expression in our society. In a world often characterized by conformity and the suppression of diverse viewpoints, the artwork encourages viewers to embrace their unique perspectives and have the courage to speak up. It celebrates the value of authenticity and reminds us that every individual has a story to tell, a voice to be heard, and ideas that can shape the world around us. Through the fusion of a cow head and a human body, "Speak Up" challenges the traditional notion of what is considered "normal" or acceptable. The artwork serves as a call to question societal norms and encourages viewers to challenge the status quo, promoting a culture of inclusivity and acceptance. It invites us to reconsider the limitations we impose on ourselves and others, reminding us that diversity and individuality should be celebrated rather than suppressed. Bright Toh's artwork, "Speak Up," stands as a vibrant and thought-provoking testament to the power of individual expression. Through the striking fusion of a cow head and a human body, the artwork challenges conventional wisdom and calls for a celebration of authenticity and diversity. Desires 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The painting titled "Desires 1" is a beautiful work of art that depicts two women sitting across from each other, engaged in what seems to be a deep and meaningful conversation. The painting, created by Esinulo Chiamaka Praise, features an older woman and a younger woman, each holding a white flower, which adds a sense of purity and serenity to the scene. The older woman, who appears to be in his 50s, and the younger woman, who looks to be in his 20s, are both dressed in a more simple dress. Both women are seated on chairs, with their faces turned towards each other in a relaxed yet focused manner. The title of the painting, "Desires 1," adds an element of intrigue and mystery to the scene, as it hints at the possibility of underlying desires and motivations between the two women. However, the painting does not provide any clear answers or indications of what those desires might be, leaving the interpretation up to the viewer. Wisdom is gathered from lessons learned from experiences. Time and age guide a man through life as regards choices or wants... One possible interpretation of the painting is that it represents the passing of knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next. The older woman appears to be sharing something with the younger woman, who listens intently and respectfully. The white flowers that both women are holding could be seen as symbols of purity and innocence, representing the purity of the knowledge and wisdom being shared. What you want today may not be what you would want tomorrow, wants change with time. Experiences and age have an influence on choices. Responsibilities are given with time. What is your desire now? Another interpretation of the painting is that it represents a deep and meaningful conversation between two people who share a close and intimate relationship. The fact that both women are holding white flowers suggests a sense of purity and love between them, while their relaxed and focused expressions indicate a sense of comfort and ease in each other's presence. In terms of technique, the painting is expertly executed, with rich colors and intricate details that bring the scene to life. Keating's use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, while the placement of the two men in the center of the painting draws the viewer's attention to their faces and the emotions that are portrayed in them. Overall, "Desires 3" is a beautiful and thought-provoking painting that captures the essence of a deep and meaningful conversation between two people. It is a testament to the power of art to evoke emotion and inspire reflection, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the motivations and desires of the two women in the painting.
