Expressionist Figurative Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Face Your Fears 2
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Face Your Fears" by Simon Obeka is a thought-provoking artwork that captures the essence of courage and self-discovery. At its core, the painting features a young woman adorned in a striking red scarf, her expression poised and determined, as if ready to confront the challenges that lie ahead. The title, "Face Your Fears," serves as a powerful invitation for viewers to confront their fears and embrace the journey of personal growth and empowerment. Through the symbolism of the red scarf, which can evoke feelings of passion, determination, and vitality, Obeka conveys the idea that facing one's fears is not only a daunting task but also an opportunity for transformation and renewal. The woman's confident posture and unwavering gaze suggest a willingness to confront adversity head-on, embodying the resilience and inner strength required to overcome obstacles. Whether literal or metaphorical, her journey serves as an inspiration for viewers to confront their fears and pursue their aspirations with courage and conviction. Obeka's artwork serves as a reminder that while fear may be a natural part of the human experience, it is through facing and overcoming our fears that we can unlock our true potential and live life to the fullest. "Face Your Fears" encourages viewers to embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth and to embark on their own journey towards self-discovery and empowerment. The Theory on Jazz History
Located in Atlanta, GA
This painting is in excellent condition and has only been shown in a gallery setting. The painting measures 78" x 35" and 81"x 38" with frame. Known for his hyperrealist nudes and portraits, Jose Borrell captures both the human form and emotions. Transcending beyond mere documentation, Borrell transmits the personality and essence of his subjects. His latest series focuses on twentieth-century American jazz saxophonist Ben Webster, and true to Borrell's signature trait, the paintings transmit the vibrant energy of the acclaimed musician. Born in 1909 in Kansas City, Missouri, Ben Webster studied violin in elementary school and taught himself piano. In 1927-1928 he played for silent movies in Kansas City and in Amarillo, Texas. After a friend introduced him to basic chords on the saxophone, he devoted himself to the instrument and played with many emerging orchestras in the bustling 1930s Kansas City jazz...

Spring of Hope
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Spring of Hope," encapsulates the essence of the artwork. Just as spring represents a season of rejuvenation and new beginnings, the woman in this piece embodies the idea of hope blooming anew. The flowing scarf, with its gentle and fluid movement, conjures images of a gentle breeze, carrying with it the promise of better days ahead. Oyindamola's use of color in "Spring of Hope" is both intentional and evocative. She employs soft, pastel hues that evoke a sense of serenity and optimism. The woman's visage radiates tranquility, and her eyes suggest a moment of introspection and inner peace. It's as if she is embracing the beauty of the present while eagerly anticipating the opportunities that the future may hold. The central figure in "Spring of Hope" is rendered with remarkable attention to detail. Oyindamola captures the elegance and grace of the woman, who exudes a sense of poise and strength. Her closed eyes convey a sense of trust and surrender, suggesting a willingness to embrace the unknown with open arms. Symbolism plays a crucial role in this artwork. The scarf, flowing around the woman's neck, is a powerful symbol of continuity and resilience. It represents the idea that no matter the challenges faced, there is always a thread of hope that connects us to a brighter future. The scarf's circular form also signifies the cyclical nature of life, where endings inevitably give way to new beginnings. "Spring of Hope" is a painting that resonates deeply with viewers, inviting them to reflect on the ever-present possibility of renewal in their own lives. The closed eyes of the woman encourage introspection and a sense of connection with the universal human experience of longing for better days. Oyewumi Oyindamola...
