Modern Figurative Paintings

MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

English Snow covered Winter Landscape with people by a house, rising Sun

Peter has an absolute love of oil painting and especially admires the masters of Dutch Painting of the 17th Century, which is reflected in his own work. Since 1995, after seeing the work of Estonian artist Olav Maran, Peter decided to review his paintings and started researching ‘Still Life’ painters such as Willem Kalf and De Heem. After experimenting with priming his own panels and canvases with different colours, then painting with thick and thin paint and glazing on top, in the way of the old masters, he has developed a style with detail and atmosphere that is essential in his portrayal of fine wine, fruit and cheeses etc. In a quirky and sometimes conceptual world, Peter makes no apologies for producing traditional subjects where the craftsmanship is evident in every brushstroke. His paintings bring much joy and pleasure to those who understand he has an obvious and underlying love of handling paint and observing his subject using techniques that take many years to acquire. Recently he has changed the view point for some of his paintings, to give them a bold contemporary look. Peter Kotka...

Alfred Aberdam (1894–1963) painter and graphic artist was a painter of School of Paris, born in Lvov, capital of Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Born in Lviv, Krystonopol, East Galicia (now Chervonograd, Ukraine) and received a traditional Jewish education in a Heder while studying Hebrew with private teachers. In 1905–12 he lived in Lvov, where he finished high school. He decided to become an artist at the age of 14. At this time he came into contact with young Yiddish Judaic writers (Melech Ravitch, Abraham Moshe Fuks, and others) and with Zionist youth groups in Lvov. He attended their meetings and their lectures on Jewish Judaica artists. After graduating high school, he organized several conferences in his hometown on Italian and Flemish masters and on the first Jewish painters, including Josef Israels (1824-1911). In 1911 he started to study art at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Lemberg/Lwów (today Lviv), studies under Gabriel von Hackl (1843-1926). During World War I he was imprisoned by the Russians and stayed in the camp for prisoners of war in Siberia where he became acquainted with David Burliuk and other Russian futurists. In 1917, Aberdam was appointed People’s Commissar of the Department of Fine Arts by the local soviet, which assigned him the task of reorganizing artistic teaching. A year later, in Moscow, he befriended the poet Vladimir Mayakovski. In 1921 in Poland, he began his studies at Kraków's Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Teodora Axentowicz, then lived in Paris. There he participated in numerous exhibitions, and in a Poland exhibition in the Gallery of Modern Art Editions in 1929. In the latter he organized the exhibition in 1931. In 1932 he exhibited in Warsaw and Lviv. From 1933 he belonged to a group of visual artists known as "Nowocześni". In 1923, while he was staying in Berlin, he met Menkes and Weingart in sculptor Alexander Archipenko’s studio. In 1924, he settled in Paris in the Montparnasse area. Kelly Fearing (1918-2011) Austin Artist Image Size: 42.25 x 30 Frame Size: 48.5 x 36.5 Medium: Oil/Gaouche "San Sebastion" Biography Kelly Fearing (1918-2011) The following information is from the artist's obituary, University of Texas Education News Prominent Artist and Art Educator Kelly Fearing Dies at 92 AUSTIN, Texas — Artist, art educator and University of Texas at Austin Professor Emeritus Kelly Fearing died on March 13 at his home in Austin, at the age of 92 due to congestive heart failure. Fearing was a professor emeritus in university's Department of Art and Art History. He taught at the university from 1947-87, and was presented the College of Fine Arts' E. William Doty Award in 2007, the college's highest honor recognizing him as an individual of distinction in his field who has demonstrated extraordinary interest in the college. "Kelly Fearing was the quintessential Renaissance man," said College of Fine Arts Associate Dean Ken Hale. "He was an artist, an author and an educator. His talent was extraordinary. He worked in almost all traditional mediums and excelled in oil painting and collage. Fearing was very well educated in all of the arts and enthusiastically passed that knowledge on to literally thousands of students. The University of Texas and the state of Texas have benefited greatly from the creativity and generosity of Kelly Fearing. His passing is a loss for us all." Born in Fordyce, Ark., Fearing was raised in Louisiana, studied art at Louisiana Tech University, earned a master's degree from Columbia University and went to Fort Worth during World War II to serve his country in a defense job. While being trained in graphic drafting for a company that was making bombers for the U.S. military, Fearing was introduced to other aspiring artists in the Fort Worth area. This group of avant-guard printmakers and artists became known as the Fort Worth Circle, and Fearing was one of its core members. Collectively, they were instrumental in introducing modernist ideas to Texas art. After teaching at Texas Wesleyan College from 1945-47, he came to The University of Texas at Austin as the Ashbel Smith Professor in Art in 1947. He retired from the university in 1987 and continued to work as a professional artist. His art has been referred to as magical realist, mystical naturalist and Romantic surrealist. As a pioneer in art education in America, Fearing founded The University of Texas Junior Art Project, the first visual arts outreach program of its kind in Texas. The program offered children of all ages and from all economic backgrounds free, university-based instruction and exposure to the arts. Kelly Fearing has been an important artist working in Texas since the 1940s. After doing his graduate work at Columbia University in New York City, Fearing established himself as a surrealist painter and print maker in Fort Worth, and then became one of the founding members of the art faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. He has had recent exhibitions at the Valley House Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and at the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery in Austin, Texas. Fearing lives and works in Austin, Texas. Courtesy of Flatbread Press and Gallery Added note: Kelly Fearing died of congestive heart failure in 2011 in Austin, Texas. William KELLY FEARING (1918-2011) Born in Fordyce, Arkansas, Kelly Fearing entered college as an accounting major but quickly discovered his intense interest in art. He studied art at Louisiana Tech University and later at Columbia University. He taught public school briefly before relocating to Texas to teach art at the university level in El Paso and Fort Worth before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. Street Musicians Oil on canvas board
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Street Musicians Artist: Albert Roca i Cama (Palamós, 1945 – 2023) Technique: Oil on canvas board Dimensions: 71 x 51 cm (27.95 x 20.08 in) Support: Canvas board Signature: Signed in the lower right corner as “214 Roca” Approximate date: Late 20th – early 21st century Condition: Very good Framing: Unframed Description of the work: The painting depicts two street musicians in a profoundly expressive scene. In the foreground, a man rests his arm on an accordion, his gaze lost in thought and a contemplative expression on his face, while holding a straw or toothpick between his lips. Behind him, another figure plays a transverse flute with closed eyes, fully immersed in his music. The composition conveys serenity and weariness, presenting an intimate moment imbued with urban lyricism. The brushwork is loose yet confident, reinforcing the emotional depth of the characters. The color palette blends warm tones with hints of grey and blue, emphasizing the introspective and street-like atmosphere. The overall impression is of a moment suspended in time, where music and life intertwine in the silent dignity of their expressions. Artist biography: Albert Roca i Cama was born in Palamós in 1945 and passed away in 2023. He was a Catalan painter associated with expressive realism, known for his energetic strokes and mastery of color. From an early age, he showed artistic inclination and worked in Barcelona alongside comic artist García...

The Witch of Endor - Oil Paint - End of 18th Century
Located in Roma, IT
The Witch of Endor conjures up the specter of Samuel in front of King Saul is an old master artwork realized by a follower of Georg Andreas Wolfgang I between 18th and 19th century. Mixed colored oil painting on canvas. On the back probable signature of the author traced by brush "P. So [mita] rt [...] Fac. ". The subject of this painting, the witch of Endor, a necromancer mentioned in the Bible whose power was to evoke the spirit of the dead, is a very rare theme in painting and there are few artists who represented it. In Italy it was especially Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) who had a deep interest in necromantic subjects and, in particular, he produced many paintings of this kind when he stayed in Florence in the 1840s. Rosa's inventions were exported throughout Europe and, in particular, in the German cities of Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Augusta through the works of Johann Heinnrich Schonfeld (Stuttgart, 1627 - Habsburg, 1684), an artist who worked in Naples and who remained sensitive to figure of Salvator Rosa. In this context, in addition to Schonfeld, the Swiss Joseph Werner II (Berne, 1637-1710) was also responsible for the diffusion of this pictorial genre, introducing Rosa's works on witchcraft among his knowledge of Augsburg. He was also the inventor of the scene represented here from whose drawing (Bern, Kunstmuseum, inv. A1196), executed in 1677, the engraving made immediately after by Georg Andreas Wolfgang the Elder (1631–1716) and by which derives precisely the work examined here. The engraving, which was part of a series of biblical images, was dedicated by Wolfgang to Leonhard Weiss, probably a municipal employee of Augsburg or tis mayor. Modernist Watercolor Painting Judaica Kiddush Levana Blessing New Moon
Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Judaic prayer scene Subject: Landscape Medium: watercolor Surface: Paper Country: United States EMANUEL ROMANO Rome, Italy, b. 1897, d. 1984 Emanuel Glicenstein Romano was born in Rome, September 23, 1897. His father Henryk Glicenstein was a sculptor and was living in Rome with his wife Helena (born Hirszenberg) when Emanuel was born his father obtained Italian citizenship and adopted the name Enrico. Emanuel was brought up in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England and Poland. In 1926 Emanuel and his father sailed for New York. They briefly visited Chicago. Romano's sister, Beatrice, and mother only joined them in New York years later. Romano changed his name on his arrival to America and some have erroneously speculated that this was to avoid antisemitic anti Jewish discrimination. In truth, as the son of a highly-regarded artist, Romano changed his name to ensure that any success or recognition he would later attain, would be the result of nothing other than his own merit as an artist, and not on account of his father's fame. In 1936 Romano was worked for the Federal Art Project creating murals. During and immediately after World War II, Romano created a series of allegorical works depicting graphic holocaust images that were held closely by the family until after his passing. One of these works is now on permanent display in the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg Florida. Emanuel's father died in 1942 in a car accident before they could realize their shared dream of visiting Israel. In 1944 Romano, having completed his degree at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago, began teaching at the City College of New York. Romano moved to Safed, Israel in 1953 and established an art museum in his father's memory, the Glicentein Museum. COLLECTIONS Indianapolis Museum of Art Metropolitan Museum of Art Boston Fine Arts Museum Fogg Museum Musée Nacional de France Recently his work has been added to the Florida Holocaust Museum collection. His notable works include his holocaust themed allegorical paintings as well as portraits of Marianne Moore, his father and William Carlos Williams...
