Realist Figurative Paintings
REALIST STYLE
Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.
Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.
By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.
Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.
Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Nikolay Alekseyevich Kasatkin (1859 - 1930) was a Russian painter, considered to be one of the founders of Social Realism in Russia. From 1873 to 1883 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture with Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov. Upon graduating, he received a medal for his painting "Beggars at the Church Door". In 1891, he began exhibiting with the Peredvizhniki and, from 1894 to 1917, was a teacher at his alma mater. For thirty years, beginning in 1883, he worked with Ivan Sytin, providing illustrations for his popular almanac/calendars and teaching lithography. He also contributed The Great Reform, an encyclopedia that celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Emancipation (1861), and a collection called "Russian History in Pictures". In 1903, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He participated in the Exposition Universelle (1900), where he won a silver medal, and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904), among others. In 1923, following the Civil War, he was named the first "People's Artist of the Republic" and became a member of the AKhRR (Association of Artists). He is considered to be one of the forerunners of Socialist Realism in the arts and was sometimes called the "Gorky of Painters". Low brick and half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, dot the landscape. The town center on the west side of Nissan is bordered by remnants of early 17th-century fortifications, including the 1600s castle, Norre Port from 1601, and King Charles XI's path along the old fortress wall. At the heart of the town is Stora Torg with Carl Milles' Europa and the Bull fountain from 1926, and the town hall built in 1938. The city layout, influenced by Renaissance planning, converges at Stora Torg, which is also home to the town's sole medieval building, the brick hall church of St. Nikolai from the 14th century.

Description : The Reverend Robert Woodley-Brown was one of those early English landscape painters whose style is so distinct that it is nearly impossible not to be able to instantly recognize his work. This one is no exception.; His paintings remind me of the old movie, “Shangri-La,” where the travelers found a magical place while crossing the Himalayas. The Reverend’s paintings have that kind of magic in them; perhaps it’s his rich color palette or his slightly provincial, yet very Georgian style. It seems there are always pretty skies along with mountains in the background and rivers or lochs somewhere in his compositions. In any case, the result is still pure magic.; This is an accomplished yet charming painting by an artist thought to be actively painting from around 1810 to 1850 and specializing in the stunning scenery of England’s Lake District. Unfortunately, little is known about Reverend Brown’s personal life, and he did not sign most of his works. I have handled several of his paintings in the course of my career and he always has been among my favorite artists.; This gorgeous landscape delivers all of Reverend Woodley-Brown’s quintessential style, color and romantic feel for which his work is admired. His figures, though seemingly entranced themselves by the beauty around them, are there primarily to give scale and a focal point. The trees are in deep, rich greens, while the pink-tinged sky further show off his talent in the realm of color. We are immediately pulled into the artist’s world. The serenity of the scene, as in all of his works, is overwhelming, making the viewer a willing partner in the artist’s interpretation of it. The very Woodley-Brownish romantic folly only adds to the scene’s charm.; In the world of Reverend Brown, his cottages often became follies shrouded in greenery. The background mountains rose...

John Edward Bale, was born at Low Farm House, Pattesley-cum-Oxwick,
South Creake, Norfolk on 27 July and baptised at South Creake on
1 August 1834, eldest child of John Edward Bale (1803-27 April 1862),
a farmer of 620 acres, and his wife Mary née Branford,
who married at Horningtoft, Norfolk on 27 November 1833. In 1841,
a 6 year old, living at Low Farm with his parents, 35 year old John and
28 year old Mary, and his two sisters, Mary 3 and Esther 1. In 1861,
a 26 year old 'artist architecture' boarding at 11 Bulstrode Street,
Marylebone, London but in October 1863, he was an Ensign by purchase
in the 1st West Indian Regiment. As a lieutenant, whilst on a tour of
duty in West Africa, Surgeon Major Augustus Frederick Elliott (born 1834),
kept a diary (now at Duke University Library) which is embellished with
calligraphy and watercolour titles by Bale. During this tour, Bale was
promoted to Captain and retired from the army in 1881 with the rank of major.
Bale married at Christ Church, Ealing on 10 November 1868,
Charlotte Gordon Lee née Johnson (c1847-1910).
A painter in oil and watercolour and a member of the Ipswich
Fine Art Club 1886-1890 and as Major Bale exhibited from 9 Creffield Terrace,

Biography: Koekkoek Hendrik Barend, often signing as Hendrik Barend (H.B.) Koekkoek, in the realm of 19th-century art, emerges as a captivating painter born in Amsterdam on November 23, 1849. A scion of the esteemed Koekkoek family, he gained renown for his landscapes and woodland scenes, following in the artistic footsteps of his father, marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek.
Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s life unfolds with a certain mystery, his artistic journey shaped by training from his father and, likely, his uncle Marinus Adrianus. In 1878, he tied the knot with Carolina Allardina Cornelia Pierson and ventured into the artistic scenes of Hilversum and Brussels, simultaneously opening an art dealership in Amsterdam.
Around 1882, the call of London beckoned, echoing the path paved by his brother Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger. In England, he painted landscapes near Guildford, akin to his cousin Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek. The latter part of his life remains shrouded in obscurity.
Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s artistic style, steeped in the romantic tradition of the Koekkoek family, adorned canvases with landscapes, woodlands, and marine scenes. His London sojourn witnessed the creation of winter landscapes with towering trees, showcased in exhibitions across Dutch cities. He breathed his last in London before 1909.
