Antonio Petruccelli (1907-1994) began his career as a textile designer. He became a freelance illustrator in 1932 after winning several House Beautiful cover illustration contests.
In addition to 24 Fortune magazine covers, four New Yorker covers, several for House Beautiful, Collier’s, and other magazines he did numerous illustrations for Life magazine from the 1930s – 60s.

Frederick Lester Sexton received a lot of reviews and exhibitions in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when he was at the height of his career. Because it captured the personal view of many people's wish to ignore national issues and simply live their lives in their homes, his work was favorably welcomed. The rise of modernist styles like Abstract Expressionism, which started to take over the American art scene in the 1950s, also contributed to Sexton's fall in popularity. As collectors and regular spectators discover once more that realism is a valid component of American art because it speaks directly and clearly to the beauty they perceive in their surroundings, many artists, like Sexton, are experiencing a renaissance.
Cheshire, Connecticut, was the birthplace of Frederick Sexton in 1889. His father, J. Frederick Sexton, was the Rector of St. Peter's Church in Cheshire and a well-known Episcopal clergyman. The mother, Mary Louise Lester, was an amateur painter and came from a pretty well-known Hartford family. Frederick was killed in an open-hearth fire when he was eighteen months old. His right hand was badly burned and was never to be opened again. The father kept the family together after his mother passed away when he was nineteen.
Sexton's mother taught him art, and he went to public schools in New Haven. He received the prestigious Winchester Prize for a year of study in Spain while attending the Yale School of Fine Art, where he studied under Augustus Tack...

This wonderful Post Impressionist exhibited horses portrait oil painting is by noted British artist Edgar Downs. Painted in 1912 it was exhibited the same year at the Royal Academy London. The painting is of two magnificent horses, one white one brown, waiting patiently while a man leans over to open the gate. Beyond is a canopy of trees. The impressionist brushwork and strong impasto create a light which is vibrant and colourful. This is an excellent example of Downs' work and one can see his infinity with the natural world.
Signed and date lower right.
Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Academy London 1912 no. 789.
Condition. Oil on canvas, image size is 36 inches by 30 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a complementary frame 44 inches by 38 inches and in good condition.
Edgar Downs, ROI, (1876–1963) was a British painter, known for painting agricultural scenes. Downs was born on 12 October 1876 at Claughton, Birkenhead, the son of William Downs. He was educated at Birkenhead School and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and received a silver medal there. He exhibited paintings called Our Daily Bread and The Edge of the Bog at the Royal Academy in 1911, when his address was given as 12 Bedford Gardens, Kensington, London. His other addresses included Arun House at Clymping, West Sussex, and latterly Mudeford, Hampshire where he died. During World War I, he served as a war artist, including spells at Gallipoli in 1915 and Salonica in 1916. He was assigned to the 1st County of London Yeomanry in July 1918. One of his paintings made at this time hangs in the Headquarters of the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry. Two of his works, Gathering Kelp (1914) and Cattle Ploughing in an Open Landscape (c. 1914), are in the collection of Fordingbridge Town Council at Fordingbridge Town Hall. Henry Baker, an Ivy League graduate from Yale University, was born in Dunkirk, New York, in 1900. Baker was one of New Hope's important modernist painters as well as a talented musician residing in the area from 1932-1950.
After graduating from Yale, Baker studied at the Art Students League in New York and upon the suggestion of his close friend, artist Ralston Crawford, he came to Merion, Pennsylvania, to study at the Barnes Foundation. While there, Baker befriended Edith Wood, a student from the Pennsylvania Academy. Miss Wood, familiar with the New Hope art colony and its charming surroundings, thought it might appeal to Baker. It did, and soon after his arrival to New Hope in 1932, Baker purchased and restored a beautiful old colonial home.

Tod Lindenmuth (1885-1976). Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and later worked in Provincetown and Rockport, Massachusetts, with a home in St. Augustine. A founder of the Provincetown Art Association and one of the original Provincetown Printers, Lindenmuth was a semi-abstract painter and graphic artist who did much to promote modernist styles and was well known for his modernist, semi-abstract and marine subject paintings. Berninger studied with Orlando Gray Wales, Arlington Lindenmuth and Walter Emerson Baum, and then was an art instructor at the Kline-Baum School in Allentown. In 1934, he was selected as one of four students of Baum into the Circulating Picture Club of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and two years later, he became Curator at the Allentown Art Museum, which had just been founded by Baum. Berninger's wife, Mabel, assisted him and served as museum curator and secretary of the Circulating Picture Club.
In 1939, he joined the jewelry store, Wuchter and Berninger, as a partner, and advertised his paintings by placing them in the store's window. A local publisher and art enthusiast, Robert Rodale, saw his work there and years later, in 2004, held the first major exhibition of Berninger's artwork. The next year, Berninger's work was represented in the Allentown Museum exhibit, "Allentown Impressions: Views of City Parks".

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us.
