Hotel d'Aligre, Rouen - Architectural France Normandy Impressionist Oil Painting
Located in Sevenoaks, GB
This charming oil on board by Lord Paul Ayshford Methuen RA depicts the Hotel d'Aligre at 30 Rue Damiette, Rouen in Normandy, France. The building, which is a 16th century mansion in the centre of the city, still exists today. The painting shows the back wing of the building with the access porch to the main courtyard. Please see final image for a present day view with the addition of windows in the roof. The work was most likely painted during or just after WW2, when Methuen was serving as a captain in the British Army. He wrote a book ''Normandy Diary'' recounting his experiences with the Procurement and Fine Art branch, which was set up to protect works of art during the invasion of the continent. A finely painted and atmospheric work which clearly shows the influence of Methuen's one time teacher Walter Sickert. Signed on the reverse and presented in a beautiful gilt frame. Artist: Lord Paul Ayshford Methuen RA (English, 1886-1974) Title: Hotel d'Aligre, Rouen Medium: Oil on board Size: 22 x 16.5 inches (56 x 42 cm) including the frame Lord Methuen (Paul Ayshford Methuen, 4th Baron), RA, RWS, PRWA (1886-1974) was a well known painter in oil, watercolour and pastel of landscapes, town scenes and figures subjects. Born at Corsham in Wiltshire he studied art under Sir Charles Holmes and later under Walter Sickert. He had his first one man show at the Warren Gallery in 1928 and later had several shows with The Leicester Galleries and Colnaghi's. He exhibited extensively at the major galleries, and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy 1951, full RA 1959, member of the Royal Watercolour Society 1952, Royal Society of British Artists 1939, New English Art Club 1943, and President of the Royal West of England Academy. His work is represented in a number of major collections, including the Tate Gallery (five examples), the Victoria & Albert Museum, and several collections in the provinces. He lived in London and at the family home at Corsham Court in Wiltshire, where he established an influential art school in 1946. Further information The Hôtel d'Aligre is a private mansion located in Rouen , France. The first body of building on this location was called the Hôtel des Presses or Hôtel des Étuves , owned by the wealthy Dufour manufacturing family. Mentioned for the first time in 1446, it was rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century by Guillaume de Fieu. Guillaume Le Fieu (November 9, 1584) was treasurer-secretary to Catherine de Medici then receiver general of the Generality of Rouen and finally ordinary master of the Chamber of Accounts of Normandy. His daughter Marie married Pierre de Couldray, sieur de Féville, king's secretary. It was in this hotel that resided at the end of the 16th century Lord Clarendon, minister in exile of the King of England. The property then became the possession of the Dambrays, Sieurs de Montigny, then in 1729 to the Godefroy de Senneville...

"Misty City", Oil Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Christopher Clark's (US based) "Misty City" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts orange and green hued clouds arching over a water and city lights Bio/artist statement: Christopher has been an artist since early childhood, when he would watch Bob Ross on PBS and mimic the famed oil painter’s art with crayons. He considers himself a self-educated artist, with his studies ranging from personal training with contemporary masters, to classical academic art technique, with much inspiration from 19th Century art and the Impressionist Movement. Christopher lived in Italy for a time, immersing himself in Italian culture and art, which continues to influence his painting. His fan base has grown considerably since his return to the US, gaining the attention of Lucasfilm and Marvel Fine Art, which both signed him as an officially licensed artist in 2016. Vintage 1960s Nocturnal Coastal Oil Painting – Moonlit Marine Landscape
Located in Denver, CO
"The Coast" is an original vintage oil painting from the mid-20th century (circa 1950s-1970s) by renowned New Mexico artist Marjorie Chambers (1923-2006). This stunning nocturnal marine landscape captures the serene beauty of the coast under a glowing moonlit sky. The artist masterfully uses a soothing palette of blues, greens, browns, and whites to create a tranquil, ethereal atmosphere. The painting is rendered on wood panel, signed by Chambers in the lower right corner, and titled on the reverse. It is presented in a custom frame with a dark finish and gold lip, with outer dimensions measuring 18 ¼ x 21 ¾ x 1 inches, and an image size of 11 x 15 inches. About the Artist: Marjorie Bell Chambers (also known as Marjorie Bell) was born in 1923 in New York. She became a prominent figure in both the arts and social activism, earning a degree in Art History and Political Science from Mount Holyoke College (1943) and a Master of Arts from Cornell University (1948). Chambers moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, in the 1940s, where she raised her family and worked as a substitute teacher while her husband, William H. Chambers, worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Along with her artistic pursuits, Chambers was a passionate advocate for women's rights and education. She earned a PhD in History and Political Science from the University of New Mexico in 1974, later serving as a faculty member and dean at Colorado Women's College. She was appointed to the National Advisory Council on Women's Educational Programs in 1976 and was vice-chair of President Carter...

Located in Santa Fe, NM
The experience of nature and daily life feed my work. The materials I use are from the natural world: beeswax and cotton thread. The threads are untwined and dyed with things I consume like spices, foods, coffee, wine, etc. This process creates an intimacy with my material. The laborious un-twining of the threads is an act of rewinding time. A going back to 'origin'. The threads become the lines I draw with. I embed these threads into beeswax-coated MDF panels to create varying experiences of landscape. The viewer, as I am, is either experiencing it up close or from a distance; zoomed in or zoomed out. "View of Arizona Desert near Wickenberg" Will Foote, Impressionist Western Scene
Located in New York, NY
Will Foote View of Arizona Desert near Wickenberg, circa 1927 Signed lower center; titled and dated on the reverse Oil on artist's board 12 x 16 inches Foote was born on June 29, 1874 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died on January 27, 1965, in Sarasota, Florida. He was in Old Lyme, 1901-65; and in Cos Cob, 1903. Will Howe Foote was one of the earliest artists at Old Lyme and one who adopted the town as home. He first went there the summer of 1901 with his uncle, William H. Howe, a painter of cattle, who had been told about the beauties of the countryside by Henry Ward Ranger. Foote had himself heard of Old Lyme when he had met Clark Voorhees in France. He and his uncle were both from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Foote's father was an executive in the furniture industry that made the city famous. Encouraged to be an artist by his father, he began his professional training at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1894. He became friends there with a fellow Michigan student, Frederick Frieseke, who would study with him again at the Art Students League in New York, where Foote worked in 1895-96 under H. Siddons Mowbray and Kenyon Cox. In 1897 he and Frieseke went to the Academic Julian in Paris, where Foote studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was at Julian's until 1900, except for an Italian trip, summers at Laren, Holland, or Etaples, France, and a short period at Whistler's school in Paris. He exhibited twice at the Old Salon, and when he returned to the United States in 1900, he had a one-man exhibition in his hometown. Will Howe Foote's paintings were well received on his return from abroad. He exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design and became an associate member in 1910. His awards included a bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904 and a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Once he visited Old Lyme, Foote returned every summer. In 1902 he was hired as assistant to Frank DuMond at the Lyme Summer School of Art, which was sponsored by the Art Students League of New York. Sometime in 1903 he also taught a session in Cos Cob. After 1906, when the League moved its Lyme classes to Woodstock, New York, Foote continued in Old Lyme as a private instructor. In 1907 he was married to Helen Kirtland Freeman, whom he had met a year or two earlier when she had come to the Lyme art colony as a student of Henry Rankin Poore. Fellow artist William Chadwick was best man at the wedding. The Footes began building a house on Sill Lane in Old Lyme and upon its completion in 1909 spent every spring, summer and fall there, where Foote devoted full time to painting. The Gregory Smiths, old friends from Grand Rapids, arrived in Old Lyme in 1910 and became neighbors. Foote's early works in Connecticut, such as A Summer's Night reflect the artist's interest in soft, atmospheric scenes dominated by a single, overriding tone. The arrival of Childe Hassam and Walter Griffin...

Sailing to the Sun, Reflection in the Water, Oil , Abstract Landscape, Nature
Located in Houston, TX
Sailing into the Sun is an abstract landscape painting. It is oil on canvas. It is gallery wrapped so there is no need for a frame. On a summer morning in 1993 a 22 years old young came to Florida from a small old town in the central area of Cuba called Santa Clara. In his bag, he brought no more than two valuable things, his worn-out brushes and a great dream. The dream to one day become a professional artist in this new land that welcomed him with open arms. Captivated by his love for the beauty of the Landscapes, his last works are what he sees even in the most common scenes: the close relationship of life and who we are with the natural world around us that asks us to respect and care for it. Artist Statement: " I like to scrutinize in the simple things, sometimes it is there where the lost painting is waiting to be found by the painter's eyes. The landscape painting gives me the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the natural world and humbly capture on a canvas a little of its beauty listening to its voice that reminds us how valuable we are and how much we should love it". Circus Wagons
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This watercolor is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Circus Wagons, 1927, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, 10 x19 ¾ inches (sight), provenance includes Stary-Sheets Art Gallery (Gualala, CA); J. Ralph & Louis Stone Foundation; presented in a newer metal frame behind glazing About the Painting Millard Sheets was only twenty years old and in his third year of studies at the Chouinard Art Institute when he painted Circus Wagons. Despite his youth, Sheets was already an accomplished artist who had publicly exhibited his work and won prestigious prizes. Within several years, he would have his first solo exhibition at one of Los Angeles’ premiere galleries and become a painting instructor at his alma mater. In Circus Wagons we already see Sheets deft handling of the watercolor medium and his interest in the California Scene. In this case, Sheets captures a back lot view of a traveling circus, a subject he sometimes returned to, including in a color screen print in the collection of the National Gallery. Sheets made a career by painting what he knew and observed firsthand. This approach allowed Sheets to capture with authenticity the details of each narrative. Even with a narrowly limited palette and an economy of brushstrokes, Sheets effectively depicts the southern California scene with its strong and mysterious shadows, as well as the workers and circus animals. Seen through the hindsight of his six-decade long career, Circus Wagons offers a fascinating insight into the early development of California Scene painting which would by the mid-1930s become the best recognized style on the West Coast. About the Artist Millard Sheets was the dean of California watercolorists. His list of accomplishments is so extensive that his entry in Who was Who in American Art is over forty lines. Born in Pomona, California, Sheets became a painter at an early age, winning a prize at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1918. By the mid to late-1920s, Sheets became a regular at art exhibitions in the western part of the United States, winning several additional prizes before he reached the age of twenty-five. Sheets studied at the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute from 1925 through 1929 with Frank Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle and had his first solo show with Los Angeles’ Dalzell Hatfield Gallery in 1929. During the 1930s, Sheets was invited to exhibit at almost every major American Museum and in many ways, his work came to represent the California watercolor school...
