Modern Landscape Paintings

MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

Rome (Milan) Italian Cityscape by Noted Hungarian Israeli Artist
By Claire Szilard
Located in Surfside, FL
Colorful Italian cityscape which includes elements of both Rome and Milan, noted on the back of the painting. Signed in hebrew. Claire Szilard, a native of Hungary, is an Israeli painter and sculptor, but for the past 10 years she has again been living in Hungary. A short time after she married Pal Fusti in 1944, her sweetheart was conscripted into the work brigade, which engaged mostly in clearing mines. Like many others, Fusti never returned from the war and was declared missing. After she gave up all hope that her husband would return, Szilard immigrated first to Switzerland and several years later, came to Israel. She lived in the artists' village of Ein Hod and later spent many years in the artists' quarter in Old Jaffa. She quickly carved out a respected place for herself among Israeli artists. She was a pioneer in the art of working in glass (vitrage). Over the years, her glasswork has decorated 14 synagogues and a number of public buildings throughout Israel. Her paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in Switzerland, Paris, Rome and London. In 1985, she was chosen painter of the year in Brazil. Szilard lived in Israel for nearly 40 years, during which time she established a studio for herself in Paris as well, married and was widowed. After the change of regime in Hungary in 1990, she showed her works for the first time in Budapest, in the prestigious Vigado Gallery. That particular exhibition had unexpected results. When she was in Budapest she learned by chance that her first husband had not been killed in the war, but had fallen prisoner and had returned to Hungary after a number of years. He looked for his young wife, but didn't find her. He too married and was widowed. Forty years later, they met again. Their feelings for each other were renewed and they decided to join their lives - she at nearly 70, he at nearly 80. Pal Fusti did not feel himself in any condition to begin a new life in Israel, which was an unknown country for him, where he did not know the language and the customs. The couple thus remained in Hungary. Not too long ago, they celebrated in great style - all the "who's who" of the artistic world of the Hungarian capital was there - the 10th anniversary of their renewed meeting, her 80th birthday and his 90th. Studies: Free Academy Budapest; School of Fine Arts, Geneva; Fresco in Ravena, Italy; Prizes: 1969 Nordau Prize; 1984 Silver...

Israeli Motke Blum Modernist Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Bezalel Artist
Located in Surfside, FL
Motke Blum was born in Racacun, Romania in 1925. Early in his childhood, the Blum family moved to Bucharest where they settled in a house situated near a circus. The circus would become young Blum's greatest love. He befriended several of the clowns and other performers and, when not painting or playing in clay, Blum could be found enjoying the company of these spirited entertainers. These experiences would later become a recurring theme in many of his works of art. In 1938, he was taken by the Romanian Iron Guard. When the Germans invaded Romania, Blum was taken to a forced labor camp. Even during his imprisonment, he continued to create art, painting on the walls of the camp. He escaped the Nazi camp in 1944 and boarded an immigrants' ship to Israel. One of the three ships in the convoy was sunk by a German torpedo. Motke later incorporated shipwrecks, boats, and other maritime subjects into several of his paintings. Studies, Bezalel, Jerusalem, Enamel, Silversmithing, Painting and Sculpture. 1956 Seminar in the dep. of design in the royal silver factory of Zeist, The Netherlands. Over the course of his long and fruitful career, Blum showed internationally at over fifty one-man-shows with exhibits in Israel, Holland, England, Belgium, the United States, France, Australia, and more. His art has been commissioned for public buildings and by prominent figures in Israel and around the world, and a series of posters were commissioned by the Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Tourism. Large Venezuelan Modernist Abstract Oil Painting Machu Picchu Marius Sznajderman
Located in Surfside, FL
Marius Sznajderman Hand signed and dated lower right, with an inscription on the verso 40 X 30 inches Oil or acrylic on canvas. Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned. The lost city of the Incas. Expressively capturing the mystique of the famed Incan ruins, this 1983 exprerssionist painting by Marius Sznajderman, titled Machu Picchu Courtyard, showcases his signature blend of bold color and dynamic brushwork. The composition features a stylized interpretation of Machu Picchu's verdant landscape and ancient stone structures, rendered in an abstracted yet recognizable form. Sznajderman's use of undulating greens, deep blues, and earthy tones imbues the work with an almost dreamlike quality, emphasizing the spiritual and historical significance of the site. Marius Sznajderman was a French-born American painter, printmaker, and scenic designer. Born in Paris in 1926 to Polish-Jewish parents, he fled Nazi-occupied France in 1942, eventually settling in Caracas, Venezuela. There, he studied at the School of Fine Arts and co-founded the Taller Libre de Arte, an influential experimental art workshop. In 1949, he immigrated to the United States, earning both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Columbia University. Over his extensive career, Sznajderman explored themes ranging from Latin American culture to Jewish heritage, with his works held in numerous public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Artist: Marius Sznajderman (French-American, 1926-2018) Issued: 1983 Dimensions: 41"L x 31"H Country of Origin: France/United States Marius Sznajderman was a Jewish Venezuelan painter, printmaker and scenic designer living and working in the United States. Born in Paris, France in 1926 his Jewish parents had migrated to France from Poland in 1923. In November 1942 the family fled Nazi-occupied France for Spain before settling in Caracas, Venezuela. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Caracas where his teachers included illustrator Ramon Martin Durban, scenic designer Charles Ventrillon-Horber and painter Rafael Monasterios. and immigrated to the United States in 1949, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University in New York. He settled in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he lived and had a studio for more than 50 years before moving to Amherst, Massachusetts in 2015. His work, which includes painting, prints and collages, as well as set designs, is in more than 45 museum and public institution collections in the United States, Latin America and Israel. He held more than 40 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums and participated in more than 75 group shows around the globe. He helped found the Taller Libre de Arte, an experimental workshop for the visual arts, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The Taller Libre de Arte was a center for young artists to work and to meet with critics and intellectuals to discuss avant-garde ideas and artistic trends from Europe and Latin America. Among the notable artists who participated in the Taller Libre de Arte were Ramón Vásquez Brito, Carlos González Bogen, Luis Guevara Moreno, Mateo Manaure, Virgilio Trómpiz...

"The Caress of Dawn"-Dolomiti - Oil Paint by Adriano Bernetti Da Vila - 2023
Located in Roma, IT
Composition: The painting is freely inspired by Lake Carezza in the Dolomites. The painting shows a lake with the trees of the surrounding forest reflected in it, whith  a sweeping vista of the Dolomites, with the mountains rising majestically in the distance, The mountains are shrouded in a delicate veil of mist, creating an ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere. As the sun begins to rise, its pink golden rays illuminating the peaks and casting shadows across the valleys. Color Palette: The color palette is soft and muted, with shades of blue and green for the lake, gray/purple, carminium, light blue, and many different shadows of "green" for the trees that as well receive the first ray of sun on the top. The mist is rendered in delicate washes of blue carminium red, green and white, creating a sense of haziness and ethereality. The rising sun is fare out of the scene. Texture: The texture of the painting is varied, with smooth washes of color for the mist, and far trees,  and delicate details for the other fare mountains and for the trees. Freely inspired to Lake Carezza area, the paint aims creating a dreamier atmosphere. Hence, the title is "The Caress...

At the foot of the Salève by Filip Haag - Oil on canvas 46x55 cm
Located in Geneva, CH
Painter and designer. Painting and ink drawing. Engraving and sculpture. From 1981–86 he studied Art History, East Asian Art History and German Literature History at the University of Zurich. In 1983-1984 in Berlin and Cologne. In 1986 return to Bern and start of artistic activity. In 1990 married to Monika Escher, three children. 1991-1995 as assistant to Professor Peter Jenny for artistic design at the architecture department of ETH Zurich; 1994–95 painting technique course at ETH Zurich and in the advanced class of the design school Bern and Biel, Bern. From 1996 Haag, along with Kotscha Reist and other artists, organized several exhibition projects for the Kiosk art space in the Lorraine district of Bern. 1999–2001 Senior Lecturer in Art History at the F + F School of Art and Media Design, Zurich, 2004 at the Langenthal Lyceum and at the University of the Arts Bern. 1996–98 member of the board of directors of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects GSMBA; since 2006 on the board of directors of the Bernische Kunstgesellschaft. Several grants and subsidies. Filip Haag's work is characterized by a consistent change in various production techniques, both classical and experimental. Nevertheless, there is a homogeneous body of work. The concept of metamorphosis serves as the main theme. Haag deals with the research of aggregate states and documents the characteristics of temporality and spatiality, form and matter. The idea of such a liquid assembly is aptly expressed in his five-minute computer animation INK’N GO (2002). Even in the early phase of 1986–89, which was characterized by figurative painting, Haag experimented with light-sensitive photo papers and chemicals. In the INJECTIONS group of works (1992–2007) he processes the results of photochemical processes and prints them out as an inkjet. This process of reflection and deliberate selection of an excerpt, sometimes only the size of a postage stamp, which extends over a long period of time, also determines other groups of works such as RECYCLING (since 1992–93), NIEDERSCHLÄGE (since 1999) and his ink works. The latter, such as RAMADIEN (1997) or SABALIS (2004), are the result of pyrotechnic processes in which Haag mixes Indian ink with easily flammable liquids and then ignites them on paper or glass. The INSECTIONS group, which appeared in 1992–96 and again since 2004 (MIFULO, 2005), is about finger painting that is close to Tachismus. With these works and his time-consuming, detailed drawings and prints, Haag creates a counterpart to the work in accelerated production technology. Since 2004, he has been producing more and more oil paintings that are reminiscent of the Informel from the 1950s, such as KROWOTA (2005) or QAKINZ (2008). The bronze sculptures he has made since 2003, such as NARALIS (2006-08), are also to be understood as a consistent continuation of the exploration of the subject of metamorphosis. They are based on the formations of wax poured into Lake Thun...
