Pink Flamingos in Lakeland British Mid 20th Century Impressionist Painting
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Pink Flamingo's Frank Duffield (British, 1908-1982) original watercolor painting on thick artist paper, unframed size: 10.5 x 11.5 inches condition: overall very good, minor wear to the edges as is normal for an unframed work, minor staining from age/ light to the surface provenance: from a large private collection of this artists work in the UK The artist: Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982. Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages": Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. During the next 14 years exhibitions were held annually in Bristol and their first permanent home was Brandon Cottage which was made available to them through the good offices of fellow member James Fuller Eberle. When the Red Lodge...

English early 19th century painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape
Located in Bath, Somerset
A painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape with a horse and rider accompanied by two hounds by a woodland river in the distance. Signed and inscribed 'Melton Mowbray', lower left. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame. John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability. Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. In 1804 Ferneley paid a man named Thomas Harrison...

19th Century landscape animal oil painting of cattle at a river
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Henry Cheadle British, (1852-1931) Cattle Resting Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)84 Image size: 19.25 inches x 29.25 inches Size including frame: 26.75 inches x 36.75 inches A well-executed landscape painting of cattle at a river by Henry Cheadle. A small herd of cattle are shown resting in a meadow by the side of a river. On the other side of the bank in the distance can be seen sloping hills reminiscent of the river Avon. At the time of this painting, the artist was living at Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham. Henry Cheadle was a landscape painter born in Birmingham on 16 May 1852 to Henry Cheadle and his wife Matilda (née Wood). His father was a hairdresser and they lived at 2a Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham. Although little can be found about his early education, he is known to have attended the Birmingham School of Art, where he won a number of prizes. He went on to study at the South Kensington Art School (later the Royal College of Art), where he also won awards including silver and bronze medals. Cheadle began exhibiting at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1871, where he went on to become a member. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1875, the Royal Cambrian Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Bristol Fine Art Academy as well as at Frost & Reed. He played an active part in the local art societies, becoming curator and later president of the Midlands Art Club. He also became a member of the Birmingham Art Circle where he exhibited up until his death. By the late 1880’s, he had moved with his parents to 40 Spring Road in Edgbaston. He spent his time travelling around painting the landscapes of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, the Midlands and North Wales. He also visited Newlyn in Cornwall where he painted a number of coastal views. He remained unmarried and lived with his parents until their deaths at the beginning of the 20th century. He continued living in Birmingham and exhibiting until his death aged 78 on 10 January, 1931. He was buried at Key Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. Some of his paintings were gifted to the Birmingham Museum shortly after his death and hung in the Victorian Room. Two of his works can still be found at the Museum today. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th Century exhibition size landscape oil painting of Sheep on a cliff
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Charles Jones British, (1836-1892) Sheep Resting Oil on canvas, signed with monogram & dated 1877, further inscribed verso Image size: 35 inches x 59 inches Size including frame: 47 inches x 71 inches Exhibition Size Painting A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint. Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Some of the smaller more intimate galleries he exhibited at were Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas...
