This beautiful portrait was painted circa 1725 and is a fine example of the English eighteenth century portrait style. The artist has chosen to depict the lady against a plain background wearing a simple red silk dress and transparent headdress hanging down the back. The sitter is not shown with jewellery or any other elements to distract the viewer’s attached, thus highlighting the beauty of the young sitter. This restrained manner achieves a sense of understated elegance.
The portrait genre was valued particularly highly in English society. Neither landscapes nor allegorical pictures were ever priced so highly at exhibitions and in the trade as depictions of people, from the highest aristocracy to scholars, writers, poets and statesmen. In this portrait this young woman is depicted facing forward with her head slightly raised and turned left towards the viewer. She is dressed in a blue satin dress. The low-cut drapery, exposing her décolletage, was not unusual for the time as 18th century women would often wear their dresses off-the-shoulder or fitted with a very open neckline.
Her perfectly oval face is enlivened by wide brown eyes, full cheeks and a mouth that sketches a half smile. Her cheeks rose with blush, which was a popular cosmetic style during the Rococo period and contrasts with her ivory skin and powdered hair. Her tied hair is studded with many flowers and the ribbon around the woman's throat accentuates her bare neck.

Alexander Roslin was one of the most important portrait painters of Europe in the 18th century. He was born in Malmö in Sweden but soon moved into Europe to paint at various royal courts. From 1750 on he worked mainly in Paris. Here he was destined to achieve great success. Lucien Génin came from a family of stone-cutters. He first studied at the art school in Rouen, then in 1919 entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He settled in Montmartre early in the 1920s, and in 1936 moved to the Latin Quarter. Although he had received a thorough training, he created his own completely spontaneous technique aiming at approaching his subjects with a fresh look. Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache.
Lucien Génin showed work at the Salon d'Automne in 1926 and 1930. His work featured at the Marcel Aymé and the Painters exhibition, Galerie Roussard...

17 Century Still Life Paolo Castelli Natura Morta Fruit Oil on Canvas Red Green

Oil painting on canvas measuring 50 x 99 cm without frame and 62 x 111 cm with coeval frame, depicting a still life of fruit by the painter Giovanni Paolo Castelli known as Spadino ( Rome 1659 - 1730 ).
This magnificent canvas, hitherto unpublished to my knowledge, depicts a display of fruit set out in the open at the edge of a wood (apples, peaches, black and white pizzutella grapes, two split watermelons and a plum), and at the edge of a stream, with a hilly landscape opening up to the left.
The fruit is placed in the foreground, very close to the viewer's point of view, and occupies, with its bright and festive colors, most of the field of vision.
The painter does not seek a particular spatial geometry or constructive scheme, but indulges in a skilful and brilliant chromatic weaving of the surfaces, by means of a pictorial material applied with exceptional fluidity and vibration, if you like, even sensual in its luminous and 'tactile' corpulence in the taste of the full Baroque.
The quality is excellent and the style appears surprisingly free and evocative, although it retains traces of the old Flemish naturalism typical of Roman Baroque still life painting, strongly influenced by the work of Abraham Brueghel,
as evidenced, for example, by the tiny drops of visible dew, or the luminous reflections on grapes or the flesh of watermelons.
These are all elements that undoubtedly indicate as its author one of the most important specialists of this pictorial genre in late Baroque Rome: Giovanni Paolo Castelli known as Lo Spadino. The painting in fact appears to be entirely typical of the painter's mature work, i.e. towards the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century (the chronological collocation is suggested by the similarities with the work of another great contemporary still life specialist, Pietro Navarra...
