Ritchie A. Benson grew up in the Los Angeles area during the World War 11 era. By the late 1950s, he was studying watercolor painting and by the 1960s was exhibiting on a national level. He spent a great deal of time painting along the California coast and was most interested in producing works which pictured boats and harbor scenes.
His watercolors were sold through the Challis Gallery in Laguna Beach and through art association exhibition sales. Mari Elsa Giddings is a contemporary artist who was born in Washington, D.C. in 1959. She grew up in Maryland, New York, and then studied art at Phoenix College in Arizona with Meryl Mahaffey and Allen Dutton. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Arizona State University in 1984, where she worked under master printers, such as Dan Britten and Wayne Kimball.
In 1986 she became chief assistant to master printer Robert A. Devoe at the Phoenix Art Press. The painting process has been an evolving experience for me from the time I was very young and first started painting in oil until now. Each stage had to be experienced and has led to a deeper understanding of what my expression in paint is all about. Painting traditional realism with good design as an important element was where I began.
Now, the evolution of my painting process has brought me to a point in which the subject, the texture of the oil medium and the physical application of the brushstrokes have become profoundly intertwined. All are so necessary to the finished work that if one were to be taken away the work would be left incomplete.
My hope is that the synthesis of the subject, design, expressive brush strokes and the texture of the paint come together to create a work of art in which the viewer experiences all of these elements at once in a powerful statement on canvas.
“New Mexico is a land of earthy colors and textures. Rocks, dirt, twiggy plants, reds and ochres against blue grays, dry, wet, cold, hot, mostly hard and rough create a movement in visual and tactile rhythms that surround me. There are times when I am standing in the New Mexico landscape on a warm day when I want to lay down and embrace it. I can’t help but be madly in love with the textures of everything around me. I am drawn to the irresistible forces that seem to bring me closer to the earth. The more I experience these textural qualities of the land, the more I am compelled to use them to express what I want to say. “
Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended Carlow University and received a degree in art and art education. Later she studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Southern California.
At the beginning of her career she worked as an art teacher and art department head in Maryland and California. After becoming a full-time artist she taught watercolor and oil painting workshops in the United States and abroad. After moving to Colorado she became a master instructor for a branch of the Art Students League in Colorado Springs and then set up her own classes in her studio where she presently teaches on a weekly basis.

Romanian Modernist Gouache Painting Of Buildings And Boats - Jean David

Jean David was a painter and designer, known for his contributions to the Romanian avant-garde and to the early modernist art of Israel (then recently founded). He was the first Israeli artist to be inducted into the illustrious Alliance Graphique Nationale in 1954.
He had studied between 1927 and 1937 at various art academies in Paris. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early '30s he was a member of the Surrealist group "unu" (meaning "one"). In 1942, he left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestine in 1944. In 1949 he went to live in Jerusalem, where he was active in developing ceramic arts, sculpture works in copper, and artistic tapestry wall hangings under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and graphic and poster designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company, Maccabiah games, Zim shipping and The Israel tourist industry. David’s primary importance was in the design of posters. He used a wildly colorful decorative style in his art, which combined illustration, caricature, and national figures. In addition he designed wall hangings for “Maskit,” and also worked in the decoration of public buildings. His paintings had elements of Surrealism and included images from nature and landscapes. Similar in style to David Klein and the Polish Cyrk posters.

About the Artist: Charles Ragland Bunnell (1897–1968)
Charles Bunnell was a pivotal figure in Colorado’s 20th-century art scene. He worked across multiple styles—from representational landscapes to fully abstract compositions—and was one of the few artists in Colorado to successfully embrace the evolving trends of Modernism, Surrealism, and Abstraction after WWII.
Bunnell studied under notable artists at the Broadmoor Art Academy, including Ernest Lawson and Birger Sandzén. His early works, including regional landscapes and mining scenes like this one, showcase a mix of American Scene painting and semi-abstract structure. He later became known for his bold experimentation with color, form, and geometry, producing both expressive oils and ink-watercolor series such as Black and Blue.
