Considered by many to be America’s foremost Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam composed his tranquil and intimate oil on canvas The Bather in the early years of the 20th century. The creation of the artwork aligns with a period of Hassam’s career where the artist’s palette was transforming, matching ever closer with the pale and pastel hues of French Impressionists like Claude Monet. Even the subject — a nude woman — represents a greater alignment with the Impressionist project, as artists of the movement and their non-mythological and non-biblical nudes still generated cries of indecency. With Hassam’s signature brushwork and attention to color, The Bather serves as a dream-like vision, serene and sensuous, of a young woman bathing in a lush forest.
While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is Hassam's command of form, light and color that brings this canvas to life. He creates a captivating composition, placing the nude subject in the bottom left of the canvas. The soft, undulating curves of the woman's body in contrapposto and the glow of her fair skin are balanced by the strong verticals and deep earth tones of the tall trees to her right. Hassam delicately frames the nude in the vivid blues of the distant water, building luminous color that further draws the viewer’s eye and results in a somewhat voyeuristic appeal — endowing his nude with both a natural innocence and an intentional sensuality.
Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam began his artistic career as a freelance illustrator, working for national publications such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and The Century. His first solo exhibition of watercolors took place in Boston in 1883, and he quickly catapulted onto the international scene, winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. The year before the present work was created, he received the Webb Prize from the Society of American Artists for another landscape painted at Gloucester. Hassam would receive numerous other awards throughout his career, most notably the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Fine Art from the American Dealers Association. A true master, Hassam depicted a way of life characteristic of both American and French society, and his work elucidates a critical chapter in American art history. Today, his work resides in the Oval Office of the White House and in numerous important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.
This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.

From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. As a young man, Maurice Brianchon studied at school in Le Mans before joining the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He went on to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, remaining there from 1917 to 1923 and working under the direction of Eugène Morand. It was here that he met and became friends with Oudot and Legueult. When he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne he was immediately elected as a member. He received the Blumenthal Award in 1924 and the Carnegie Prize in 1939. He was a founder member of the Salon des Tuileries and was appointed to serve on the committee in 1941. He also exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He took part in major exhibitions abroad, including the Venice Triennale, Antwerp, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Madrid, Brussels and Stockholm.
He soon made his mark as a decorative artist, creating stage sets for the Opéra for a production of Griséldis (1922) in collaboration with Legueult, and for Noble and Sentimental Waltzes ( Valses Nobles et Sentimentales) (1938), Sylvia (1941) and The Model Animals ( Les Animaux Modèles) (1944). He created a large, decorative piece entitled Symphony at the Palais de Chaillot, where he worked with Chapelain-Midy, Planson and Oudot. He also decorated the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly with murals. With his wife Marguerite Louppe he produced three large panels commissioned by the state in 1942 for the Conservatoire. Thomas Tribby (American, b. 1944) is an internationally known artist who has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe.
He works in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Tribby has gallery representation in Florida and his paintings have been featured in articles in Waterfront Home and Design and Architectural Digest. Tribby has participated in juried and invitational shows in Florida, California, Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and New York, and in Paris, France.
In December 2007, Tribby had the honor of being one of nine painters in the American Delegation at Le Salon des Beaux Arts de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts exhibition, known as the Paris Salon, at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, where his painting, Lifeguard, was exhibited.
In January 2008 Tribby received from the Design Center of the Americas, DCOTA, the prestigious Stars of Design award in the category of Art.
Tribby lives and works in West Palm Beach, Florida.

"The Kiss" 2023, dark figurative oil painting by Daniela Astone

Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today.
Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background.
