Thoren was the son of Colonel Franz Kasimir Ritter von Thoren and his wife Konstanze Maria (née Lachmann). He became an officer in 1846 and was involved in the Hungarian campaign in 1848. He then spent a long time in Venice, where he was employed as an adjutant to the military and civil governor Ludwig Gorzkowski. After turning to painting in 1857, he studied in Brussels and Paris for several years.

A lovely genre painting of a woman peeling apples with her two young daughters by Joseph Clark. The eldest daughter is shown standing next to her mother in the kitchen, whilst the younger child plays on the floor.
Joseph Clark was born on 4th of July 1834 at Cerne Abbas, Dorset. He was the son of William Henry Clark, a draper and his wife Susanna (née Shepherd). After the death of his father, his mother encouraged her son to move to London to study at the Leigh’s Academy, (now Heatherley School of Fine Art) which was set up by James Matthews Leigh in 1848. He later continued his artistic education by enrolling at the Royal Academy School and began specialising in genre scenes.

Jules-Bertrand Gélibert was registered at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He first studied with his father Paul and the sculptor Bernard Griffoul-Dorval. His first exhibited sculpture was already a portrait of a dog ("Druid", a dog of the Prince Imperial, in 1860). But Jules Bertrand Gélibert is above all well known today as a painter of hunting scenes and hunting dogs. His workshop was in Montmartre in Paris, 17 boulevard Pigalle. In 1861, he was given an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1865 he lived in Clamart and studied with Louis-Godefroy Janin, the great painter specializing in dogs. We know that he also painted with his brother and when Jules was painting animals, Gaston was painting landscapes. Among his famous hunting pictures, in 1875 a "Hallali of deer in the ponds of Belle Croix" in the forest of Fontainebleau is noticed. Critics admired "the vigor of design and color, of movement and keenness of observation." At the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and that of 1900, he was given bronze medals. Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century.
Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own.
The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore.
The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...

This highly atmospheric and well executed painting by William Watson Jnr depicts Highland Cattle watering at Glen Goil. Glen Goil is a valley area of Argyll and Bute in the West Highlands. It is situated at the junction of Hell’s Glen and Gleann Mor and has the river Goil flowing through. Located around 2 miles from Lochgoilhead, it is well known as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Watson made several trips to the Highlands and produced a number of paintings of the locality, many of which included highland cattle such as this fine example. Another painting by him of Glen Goil is held by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s.
As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists.
Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. A wonderful painting of Highland sheep resting near Loch Awe by William Watson Jnr. Loch Awe is located in Argyll and Bute in the Scottish Highlands and this scene is taken from the mountain side overlooking the loch.
William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s.
As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists.
Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen...
