Edmund Davenport was a New Yorker and a successful illustrator in the 1920’s. He painted covers for Women’s Home Companion and The Saturday Evening Post, and at the same time, he worked in the art department of Paramount Studios.
At the time of this publication, a young woman’s graduation from college was a rare accomplishment, and the opportunities for employment that required a college diploma, were even rarer. Nevertheless, it was a good reason for this pretty, young woman to be sitting on top of the world in the vicinity of “cloud nine.” “Top of the World” appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on June 13, 1925.

James Floyd Clymer ( 1893-1982 ) known for his Regionalist style of land, sea and cityscapes, created paintings with an emphasis on color and form. His works possess a clear and simple style, easily understood by the masses.
Born in Perkasie Pennsylvania, 20 miles north of Philadelphia, Clymer was the
youngest of seven children. Losing his mother during childbirth, he was raised by his eldest sister. He attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, studying Art and Architecture and worked as an Architect in the years following World War I.
During this time, Clymer met the artist Gwenyth Waugh, daughter of the renowned marine painter, Frederick Judd Waugh. His thrust then changed from Architect to Artist. Together, the couple travelled to destinations such as Spain and Newfoundland, where they gave birth to their only daughter.
In the early 1920's, Clymer and family settled in Provincetown, MA and quickly became associated with notable artists such as Helen Sawyer, Edwin Dickinson...

In person, with the human eye, the paper looks reasonably smooth with out blemishes.
For this fashion illustration, Georges Lepape paints a stunning abstract pattern for the subject dress that is repeated in her hair. The work represents an early use of metallic paint, with silver metallic in the dress and bronze metallic in the blouse. Lepape's highly detailed drawing becomes more evident the closer you look. It's quite amazing how deftly he rendered facial feature on such a small scale. Description
This charming watercolor captures a sweeping view of Bodega Bay, California, rendered with the refined draftsmanship and decorative sensibility for which Jessie Arms Botke is renowned. While best known for her gilded avian compositions, Botke’s landscapes are comparatively rare and reveal a more personal side of her artistic vision. Here, the viewer peers over the distinctive red turret of a Victorian home toward the curving estuary, where land meets sea beneath a soft blue sky. Delicate washes and crisp detailing convey the texture of the shoreline, the undulating water, and the surrounding structures, evoking the calm yet lively spirit of a coastal fishing village in the early 20th century. The warm terracotta tones of the foreground architecture contrast beautifully with the cool blues of the water and the distant hills, creating a balanced, harmonious scene.
Although no journal entry or record confirms a specific trip to Bodega Bay, Botke may have painted this work, circa 1906, during the period when she was offered a round-trip passage from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to travel from Chicago to Arizona and California in exchange for paintings depicting scenes of the West. The style and vantage point suggest direct observation, making it likely that she visited the town and painted the scene en plein air. With its architectural detail, vibrant palette, and compositional harmony, this work stands as a significant example of Botke’s lesser seen yet highly collectible works on paper.
