The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge
The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge

The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge

By Alfred Benjamin Cole

Located in Middletown, NY

After Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto Copper plate engraving with hand coloring on cream laid paper with the Arms of France watermark (a crown in shield topped by a fleur-de-lys and the letters GR), 22 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches (576 x 400 mm), wide to full margins. Multiple vertical and horizontal creases from folding and rolling; none appear to be particularly hard, there is however some associated cockeling. While there is some minor mat tone visible around the perimeter of the sheet, the extensive handcoloring remains extremely fresh and saturated in the intended areas. There are edge tears at each the right and left sheet edge (outside of the image area) due to an improper effort to mount the sheet to a mat. Otherwise in very good condition with all issues being consistent with age. The print is wrongly titled "The South East Prospect of Westminster Bridge...

Holbein Hand-colored Portrait of Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury for Henry VIII
Holbein Hand-colored Portrait of Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury for Henry VIII

Holbein Hand-colored Portrait of Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury for Henry VIII

By (After) Hans Holbein The Younger

Located in Alamo, CA

This framed hand colored stipple engraving and etching portrait of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry VII and his son King Henry VIII was created by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728–1815) after a drawing and a painting by Hans Holbein (1497-1543), who was Henry VIII's court painter. The print was published in London by John Chamberlaine in 1795. The print was created utilizing stipple engraving and etching techniques by the Italian artist Francesco Bartolozzi, who was employed as the royal engraver by King George III of England. The publisher, John Chamberlaine, was Keeper of the King's Drawings and Medals. The inscription beneath the portrait reads" "In His Majesty's Collection", "Engraved by F. Bartolozzi R A Historical Engraver to His Majesty'' in the lower right, and ''From an original drawing by Hans Holbien'' in the lower left. The original painting by Holbein is displayed at Lambeth Castle and the original drawing is in the art collection at Windsor Castle. The engraving is held by many museums, including: The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, The Chicago Art Institute and The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This portrait depicts Archbishop William Warham facing to his right, wearing a black cap covering his ears and fur trimmed clerical robes. The print is presented in a decorative gold-colored wood frame with a blue-grey fabric mat. The frame measures 26.5" x 20.13" x 1". The print is in excellent condition. William Warham (1450-1532) was the last of the pre-Reformation archbishops of Canterbury, serving under King Henry VII and then under King Henry VIII. He was a quiet, unassuming intellectual whose career ended with a strong and brave stance against the divorce of King Henry VIII and the king's resultant withdrawal of England from the Catholic church and his draconian actions against the clergy. As Lord Chancellor...

The satirical scene is the signing of the Fox-North coalition, which was a short-lived partnership the two formed while combining forces in the House of Commons to oust then Prime Minister William Petty, Earl of Shelburne. Fox had fallen out of favor with the Irish born Shelburne, also a Whig, whose ministry remained in power just long enough to see the American War of Independence...

Portrait of a Lady with a Blue Bow - British 18thC art Old Master oil painting

Located in Hagley, England

This superb British 18th century Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to Matthew William Peters. Painted circa 1780 it is a fine half length portrait of a woman gazing to her left. She has a lovely blue bow and sash on her dress. The sympathetic detail in her face is sublime. A really wonderful 18th century Old Master portrait. Matthew William Peters was known for his late 18th century portraits which had both the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Provenance. Lincolnshire estate. Condition. Oil on canvas 30 inches by 25 inches unframed and in good condition. Has has restoration. Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt carved swept period frame, 40 inches by 35 inches framed and in good condition. Matthew William Peters (1742-1814) was an English portrait and genre painter who later became an Anglican clergyman and chaplain to George IV. He became known as "William" when he started signing his works as "W. Peters". Peters was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, the son of Matthew Peters (born at Belfast, 1711), a civil engineer and member of the Royal Dublin Society; by Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of George Younge of Dublin. The family moved from England to Dublin when Peters was young. Peters received his artistic training from Robert West in Dublin; in 1756 and 1758 he received prizes from the first School of Design in Dublin. In 1759, he was sent by the Dublin Society to London to become a student of Thomas Hudson and won a premium from the Society of Arts. The group also paid for him to travel to Italy to study art from 1761 to 1765. On 23 September 1762 he was elected to the Accademia del Disegno in Florence. Peters returned to England in 1765 and exhibited works at the Society of Artists from 1766 to 1769. Beginning in 1769, Peters exhibited works at the Royal Academy. In 1771 he was elected an associate and in 1777 an academician. He returned to Italy in 1771 and stayed until 1775. He also probably traveled to Paris in 1783–84, where he met Léopold Boilly, Antoine Vestier, and was influenced by the work of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. On 27 February 1769, Peters became a freemason, and he was made the grand portrait painter of the Freemasons and the first provincial grand master of Lincolnshire in 1792. In 1785, he exhibited portraits of the Duke of Manchester and Lord Petre as Grand Master at the Royal Academy exhibition. According to Robin Simon's article in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, no British contemporary had such an Italian manner of painting as Peters, reflecting the old masters he copied. Many of Peters' works were erotic and although these works did not damage his career, according to Simon, Peters later regretted these when he became an ordained clergyman in 1781. He served as the Royal Academy's chaplain from 1784 to 1788, at which time he resigned to become chaplain to the Prince of Wales. In 1784, Peters was awarded the living of Scalford, Leicestershire by Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland. In 1788, the Dowager Duchess gave him the living at Knipton, at which time he also obtained that at Woolsthorpe. These livings were near to Belvoir Castle...

The Witch of Endor - Oil Paint - End of 18th Century
The Witch of Endor - Oil Paint - End of 18th Century

The Witch of Endor - Oil Paint - End of 18th Century

Located in Roma, IT

The Witch of Endor conjures up the specter of Samuel in front of King Saul is an old master artwork realized by a follower of Georg Andreas Wolfgang I between 18th and 19th century. Mixed colored oil painting on canvas. On the back probable signature of the author traced by brush "P. So [mita] rt [...] Fac. ". The subject of this painting, the witch of Endor, a necromancer mentioned in the Bible whose power was to evoke the spirit of the dead, is a very rare theme in painting and there are few artists who represented it. In Italy it was especially Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) who had a deep interest in necromantic subjects and, in particular, he produced many paintings of this kind when he stayed in Florence in the 1840s. Rosa's inventions were exported throughout Europe and, in particular, in the German cities of Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Augusta through the works of Johann Heinnrich Schonfeld (Stuttgart, 1627 - Habsburg, 1684), an artist who worked in Naples and who remained sensitive to figure of Salvator Rosa. In this context, in addition to Schonfeld, the Swiss Joseph Werner II (Berne, 1637-1710) was also responsible for the diffusion of this pictorial genre, introducing Rosa's works on witchcraft among his knowledge of Augsburg. He was also the inventor of the scene represented here from whose drawing (Bern, Kunstmuseum, inv. A1196), executed in 1677, the engraving made immediately after by Georg Andreas Wolfgang the Elder (1631–1716) and by which derives precisely the work examined here. The engraving, which was part of a series of biblical images, was dedicated by Wolfgang to Leonhard Weiss, probably a municipal employee of Augsburg or tis mayor.
