NEW Slim Aarons 'Pulitzer Pool Party' Mid-century Modern Photography

1961

About the Item

Guests relax by the swimming pool at Lilly Pulitzer's pool party, Palm Beach, Florida, April 1961. Lilly Pulitzer is seen at centre (wearing headscarf) on the lap of her husband, Peter Pulitzer, and talking to Florence 'Flo' Pritchett Smith (wearing a sunhat). Slim Aarons Pulitzer Pool Party 1961 Fiber Print Estate signature stamped and hand numbered edition of 150 with certificate of authenticity from the Slim Aarons estate Max size 40x40" We are excited to release ‘Gold Coast’, a new print collection devoted to the Palm Beach photographs of Slim Aarons, celebrating the life and work of fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer - coined the originator of American resortwear.   From the 1950s through the 1990s, Aarons traveled up and down the South Florida coastline photographing the cities, resorts, and local residents on assignment for Holiday, Town & Country, and Travel + Leisure. While dozens of images were published at the time, including some of his best known, hundreds of unseen images remained in the archive.   This collection features recently uncovered photographs from Aarons' archive with most making their public debut as part of a 2024 exhibition at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens and Museum in West Palm Beach. Slim Aarons, an acclaimed fine art photographer, is synonymous with images that capture the luxury, glamour, and jet-set lifestyle of the mid-20th century. Renowned for his candid portraits of celebrities, socialites, and the global elite, Aarons' work celebrates vintage elegance and opulent leisure, as epitomized in his iconic 1970 photograph "Poolside Gossip" series, which include the former fashion model Helen Dzo Dzo Kaptur and Nelda Linsk, and art dealer Joseph Linsk, at the Richard Neutra's designed Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, California, arguably the most famous home in Palm Springs. The Linsks are the current owners of the house.. Granted exclusive access to the world's most elite gatherings, he wove tales of extravagance, often juxtaposed against mesmerizing modernist architecture. His photography, reminiscent of the distinct styles of contemporaries like Horst P. Horst, Helmut Newton, and Bert Stern, has been showcased in esteemed institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Palm Springs Art Museum, Getty Images Gallery, and IFAC Arts. Slim Aarons (1916-2006) primarily worked for society publications, capturing "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." He photographed the rich and famous both before and after his tenure as a photographer for the US military magazine, Yank, during World War II. His work has been featured in publications like Town and Country, Holiday, Venture, and LIFE. Though closely aligned with Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Aarons chose not to join them in founding Magnum. Instead, he transitioned from black and white photography, immersing himself in a world of sun-drenched glamour and light-heartedness. His intimate portrayals of the elite and the jet set brim with the wit and charisma that granted Aarons unparalleled access to high society. IFAC Arts, in collaboration with the Hulton Archive at Getty Images, presents Slim Aarons' vast collection of negatives and transparencies. This collection spans six decades, showcasing a lifestyle many dream of but few experience. Expert darkroom work on the original negatives and transparencies allows for prints of his images in the largest photographic sizes, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in these dazzling depictions of the good life. Bow, San Francisco
By Nenad Samuilo Amodaj
Located in Hudson, NY
Amodaj created the Hoop and Ball series of photographs in June 2010 with dancer and author Shawnrey Notto. The photographs were based on an earlier series of drawings Nenad made of Notto wearing parts of the deconstructed wedding dress during his figure drawing study in Michael Markowitz’s 23rd Street studio in San Francisco. The hoop skirt serves as an augmentation device, a skeletal extension meant to alter the visual perception of the human form. To realize the full associative power of the hoop, Amodaj created a counter-shape to the hoop, a white sphere (the Ball) made from plaster strips, to match the cloth texture and placed it in a dynamic relationship with his model. Notto improvised the poses from Nenad’s drawings in constant slow motion. The whole project was done in two 3-hour sessions with no rehearsals and no replays. The minimalistic setting, uniform lighting, and central vantage point shift perception from a trivial reality to a metaphysical one. The intent was to induce the spectator to spontaneously alternate between the three aspects: the human form, the symbolic function of the skirt, and the geometry of the cone and sphere. The spontaneity of dynamic poses and the imperfections of a handheld camera balance this sparse imagery. The exhibition presents a selection of 15 photographs from a project collection of over a hundred. Most of the series are gelatin-silver prints from a 35 mm film, with a few exceptions for large-scale digital color prints. Amodaj was influenced by the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher's typologies of industrial buildings and František Drtikol’s nudes. In the spirit of Becher’s “typologies,” Amodaj’s Hoop and Ball series of photographs explores endless mutations of the hoop skirt architecture, a clothing item with a curios geometric form that can be classified as a “flexible cone.” It is a form that appears both in nature and in artifice: flowers, bells, horns, nuclear power plants...
