Every year, the gallery owner curates the show to best exemplify the 56 exhibited artists’ strengths and aesthetics, remaining cohesively linked by Robin’s extensive knowledge of her artists and of photography. “This is my favorite exhibit, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Robin. “It is my curatorial showcase.” From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery rooms are a mosaic of nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle.
This year’s invitational image, “Beach Samba” by Patricia Heal, is a portrait of a woman in a large, orange-red sunhat, whose downward gaze obscures her face entirely. The series is based on the idea to look at the famous literary work from an unorthodox perspective and show the content with the help of visual images. In Vladimir’s view the asexuality of the characters allows, within the given photographic project, to use a “transvestitism approach” with females portraying males. The task was to use a natural female refinement of the heroines.
Chronologically-wise the Chekhov’s characters find themselves in the 1920’s and the 1930’s when the very notion “style” was most graphic and fitting.
The retro-styling approach used in the series makes the photos both expressive and melancholic at the same time. With all his inherent theatricality and nostalgia the artist puts his post-modernistic compositions in the atmospheres of the years past reproducing long-gone motifs. He shows reality against the background of a “theatrical universe”. Grace Glueck, a prominent art critic for the New York Times newspaper, wrote that Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnyov’s large-scale photos look intriguing and, among other things, the photos have something really theatrical about them as if inspired by the system initiated by the Russian theatrical director of the early 20th century Konstantin Stanislavsky.
In a subject called Temptation, the rather spoilt servant Yasha in the role of a tempter portrays a so-called new Russian. The character is expressive and cynical; he is aloof, kind of cheeky and self-satisfied individual quick to elbow old-timers.
A tragic theme of old age, helplessness and eventual death of a servant named Firse is solved in the form of diptych with a little girl sitting alone in the corner of a huge empty room.
The image of land-owning lady Ranevskaya was quite logically portrayed by Renata Litvinova, an actress, script-writer and film director who had played the same role in the Moscow Art Theater...

Yoshinori Mizutani's (*1987, Japan) works suggest new expressive possibilities that mix the domestic traditions of personal and street photography with those of foreign conceptual photography.
Mizutani graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography in 2012. He has won a number of prestigious awards including Japan Photo Award in 2013 as well as Foam Talent Call and Lens Culture Emerging Talents Top 50 in 2014. His series Tokyo Parrots was on view at this years Bienne Festival of Photography in Bienne/Switzerland. His foray into photography is fairly recent, he started 5 years ago. Nonetheless, his photographs do demonstrate an innate understanding of how forms, colours, textures and depth translate to the pictoral plane. He is working with a visual vocabulary that has been well established by the work of many photographers active today. Mizutani’s work serves as a good gauge of the visual tropes and photographic styles that are prevalent among young photographers in Tokyo.

'KAWAU(2015)
I have a growing interest in birds inhabiting Tokyo since I completed my previous series ‘Tokyo Parrots’. ‘KAWAU’, which is a Japanese term for cormorant, composes the second part of my trilogy on birds. Similar to the parakeets captured in ‘Tokyo Parrots’, kawau has increased dramatically in number over the past decade and now their over population is causing troubles to the human life as well as local ecosystem in several parts of the country. Despite their reported negative impact and reputation, it is breathtaking to watch a big flock of birds, and through my photography I want to reveal their existence, which makes our everyday urban landscape somehow surreal.'

ABOUT:
In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook.
Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations.
The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden.
The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film.
