The Tooth of Time It is obvious that the photographer Stefanie Schneider has a background in film. All her pictures live from the dust-filled eroticism of American road movies. For Hitchhikers, the thirty-seven-year-old artist sent her protagonists into the desert. The air shimmers. Desert. A highway, massive autos, dusty kisses. One is familiar with these sorts of images from films, even if one hasn't yet seen this particular one. In any case, it seems to be older: The tooth of time has gnawed at the photos; they are discolored, strangely and incorrectly exposed, covered with white spots. False! The photographic series Hitchhikers was created this year; the photos got their patina because the photographer Stefanie Schneider only uses film which has passed its expiration date by up to five years, and which accordingly reacts to light in unpredictable ways. Where one's assumptions are correct is in the matter of the cinematic allusions: Schneider received a degree in film at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen and was a cutter for several years. In the USA, she was responsible for the scene photos in the feature-film debut (Everything put together) of Marc Forster (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland) and out of tha collaboration developed her own photographic series Suburbia. Hitchhikers is similarly structured and actually consists of stills, in this case without the accompanying film: loosely staged pictures in which the protagonists have space for spontaneous improvisations. No plot, but moods which seem familiar to us. Schneider remarks that during the shooting she was thinking of Thelma and Louise. The series is marketed along with other works of Schneider by the Editions Galerie Lumas, the Galerie Caprice Horn in Berlin, and the Zurich gallery nd-projects. The Lumas branch in Munich is featuring Schneider in the exhibition Polaroid Movie through February 28, and starting on February 23 the feature film Stay runs, in which Schneider's pictures play a crucial role. And the thirty-seven-year-old artist, who lives alternately in Berlin and Los Angeles, continues to work on her filmography. At the moment she is developing along with Marc Forster a concept of transferring her typical photographic aesthetic into moving pictures...

Unframed Signature: Signed, titled, dated, artist’s stamp on reverse Condition: Very good This photograph depicts the landmark volcano Vulcan Arunal in Costa Rica. It is a chromogenic print, also called a C-print on Kodak paper. It was done in 1989 when Klipper visited Costa Rica. He said this about the photographs that came from that experience: “- In the Rain Forest: The Specifications of Life, photographs made deep inside the rain forest preserves of Costa Rica; these forests are essential to planetary health and threatened everywhere; I wanted to ‘swim’ in the densest soup of DNA anywhere. [1989]” The photograph is in very good condition. The mat is in very good condition. Stuart Klipper was born in the Bronx in 1941. He then lived in Stockholm, Sweden, moved to Minneapolis in 1970 and currently resides there. He has made six visits to Antarctica to photograph, and has also worked in Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Alaska and Lapland (in the area irradiated by the Chernobyl disaster). Other major forays have taken him across Northern Australia; the deserts of Israel and Sinai; the tropical rain forests of Costa Rica, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego; and Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He has logged many thousands of miles at sea, photographing on all of the Earth's oceans... and seas. For over 30 years, he has made photographs in all 50 states, distilling and crystallizing the defining characteristics of American regions. Other undertakings include extensively photographing the First World War cemeteries and memorials of the Western Front, major physics and astronomy research installations throughout the U.S. and the Anasazi ruins of the Southwest. His photographs have been exhibited in, and collected by, major museums in the U.S. and overseas; foremost, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Walker Art Center, The Jewish Museum, the Israel Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kunsthalle Bonn and the Moderna Museet. He has been the recipient of several major grants, including two each from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Bush Foundation, and three each from the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. He is a recipient of the U.S. Navy's Antarctic Service Medal. He was also visiting professor, Art Department, Colorado College, 1978 to 2008. I place the cutouts within the birds’ current habitats so that they look real, but upon inspection, reveal themselves to be photos within photos—the gaze within the gaze upon nature—as actual birds recede into marginal zones of survival. The images are meant to disrupt the casual gaze, disarming the expectations of nature photography, leaving viewers disturbed and curious. Divergence of Birds (2017-current) A large-scale, long-term, multimedia conceptual project about the threat of species extinction on birds in North America . My current climate project, Divergence of Birds, takes inspiration from two texts: The Audubon Society’s “Birds and Climate Change Report” which projects that, by 2080, climate change will affect the range of habitat of over half of North American birds; and Phillip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” where electric versions of once-commonplace animals are so realistic that they fool even veterinarians. Divergence of Birds addresses the prospect that, one day, only simulacra of climate-impacted animals will be left.
