It is a chromogenic print, also called a C-print on Kodak paper. Klipper traveled to Antarctica in 1989 under the aegis of the National Science Foundation. Some of his photographs from this trip were later included in a New York MoMA exhibit titled “Projects 26 – Stuart Klipper On Antarctica 1989.” The three-foot-wide color panoramas in this exhibition were selected from the series On Antarctica, which comprised more than 1,000 pictures made in 1989. In the exhibition brochure, curator Peter Galassi writes that the artist’s panoramas present “a landscape that is ravishing in its barren beauty, in its inhospitable grandeur, and in the delicacy of its ever-changing hues. The photographs seem to fuse the epic swoon of romanticism with the impersonal rigor of science.” The photograph is in very good condition. The mat is in very good condition. Unframed. Stuart Klipper was born in the Bronx in 1941. He then lived in Stockholm, Sweden, moved to Minneapolis in 1970 and currently resides there. He has made six visits to Antarctica to photograph, and has also worked in Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Alaska and Lapland (in the area irradiated by the Chernobyl disaster). Other major forays have taken him across Northern Australia; the deserts of Israel and Sinai; the tropical rain forests of Costa Rica, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego; and Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He has logged many thousands of miles at sea, photographing on all of the Earth's oceans... and seas. For over 30 years, he has made photographs in all 50 states, distilling and crystallizing the defining characteristics of American regions. Other undertakings include extensively photographing the First World War cemeteries and memorials of the Western Front, major physics and astronomy research installations throughout the U.S. and the Anasazi ruins of the Southwest. His photographs have been exhibited in, and collected by, major museums in the U.S. and overseas; foremost, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Walker Art Center, The Jewish Museum, the Israel Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kunsthalle Bonn and the Moderna Museet. He has been the recipient of several major grants, including two each from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Bush Foundation, and three each from the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. "Plane Into Cloud, AZ" is an original color photograph by Thomas Ferderbar. The artist signed the piece lower right. It depicts an airplane flying towards a large, fluffy cloud. 20 1/4" x 15" image 26" x 21" paper 29" x 24" frame I wanted to become a photographer at the age of 12, when my sister Grace gave me a Kodak Box Brownie camera for Christmas. (I still have that camera.) Since our family was quite poor, I built my first enlarger with an oatmeal box, while that same box camera was used as its lens. In 1947, just after graduation from high school, I had the opportunity to travel to California by car and house trailer with my uncle, aunt and mother, and in the process to shoot my first pictures along Route 66. Then, after graduation from college, a stint in the army followed by photography school, I opened an advertising photography studio in 1954. For over four decades my staff and I earned numerous local, regional and national awards for our achievements in photography, including several "best of show" honors. In 1958 I studied with renowned landscape photographer Ansel Adams at his Yosemite National Park workshop. In 1980, while still operating my advertising photography studio, I began a serious photographic study of the decaying artifacts along our country's former Mother Road, Route 66. The former national highway route from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California was not a popular subject at the time, and so I filed away my transparencies, not knowing what I might ever do with them. However, as time passed Route 66 did become a topic of national interest, and upon my retirement in 1997, I once again returned to record the Mother Road's artifacts. A number of my Yosemite series photographs are included in the Ansel and Virginia Adams collection at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona at Tucson, and several of my Route 66 photographs and other subjects have been acquired by the Milwaukee Art Museum. At this time I am preparing a book of my photographic experiences along Route 66, from 1947 to the present. --Tom Ferderbar

From series, Standing Together: Inez Milholland's Final Campaign for Women's Suffrage In 1916, Inez Milholland Boissevain (1886–1916) embarked on a grueling campaign across the Western US on behalf of the National Women’s Party appealing for women’s suffrage ahead of the 1916 presidential election. Standing Together, by artist Jeanine Michna-Bales (born 1971), retraces Milholland’s journey. The 30-year-old suffragist delivered some 50 speeches to standing-room-only crowds in eight states in 21 days: Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Utah, Nevada and California. She battled chronic illness and lack of sleep during her travels and died a month after her last speech in Los Angeles, where her final public words were, “Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?” Through her photographs, combining dramatic landscapes and historical reenactments of important vignettes of Milholland on her journey with archival materials, Michna-Bales captures a glimpse of the monumental effort required to pass the 19th Amendment.

His lifelong interest in cutting-edge media technology as well as his expertise in photography cast him as pioneer in digital art and allow him to develop virtual matrix from which he extracts his images. In his works he explores a universe that lies at the crossroad of abstraction and the figurative, inviting the viewer to determine if what he sees is a reflection of reality or imagination. Through is truly unique approach RIOUX is one of the most innovative artists in digital creations and one of the few creative minds able to blend with such keenness aesthetics research and critical distance. Whether they translate into a Dantesque urbanity or the infinite horizon of a turquoise ocean, the urban territory reflected by his creations offers a dystopian view of the world, challenging our attitude towards the environment and the future. From the onset, RIOUX has no intention of matching IRL expectations of what digital art 'should' look like, but strives to play with our notions of what's real, what's not, how we remember, and how we infer meaning into imaginary visual constructs. --- RIOUX started the Cloud project in 2022. Paul-Emile Rioux’s series Cloud, like his other work, is a kind of aesthetic thought experiment. Each square image is bisected symmetrically, or nearly symmetrically, by a tidy horizon. The upper half display forms that appear as clouds, the bottom as an underwater seascape, yet at the same time mimics the cloudlike formations of above. Formally these works reference hard-edged abstraction, minimalism and abstract expressionism, though juxtaposed with a sort of Instagram lifestyle sensibility. When shown as a gridded series, they recall the Instagram account @insta_repeat which curates gridded typologies of nearly identical influencer photos – for instance sunsets on a beach, or campfires with hiking boot clad feet visible in the foreground, transforming images, which individually are meant to signify the good life, into symbols of stifling homogeneity, cynically trying to capitalize on mass-produced sensations. Unlike past movements in abstract or minimal art, however, Rioux is not striving to create self-contained objects, but windows into deeper currents that churn in the dark spaces where culture, technology and the subconscious flow together. Rioux’s digital works are not specifically images, but notes, ways of thinking. They connect to a larger discourse. With Clouds, Rioux thinks aloud about what is hidden and what is revealed in our relationships to technology and nature. It is a meditation on “the cloud,” which, like real clouds, seem immaterial, but in fact are physical and have a material impact on the world. Rioux considers the juxtaposition between weight and weightlessness – the apparent weightlessness of virtual reality, against the mass, the inescapability of the material world. Technology promises a world of lightness, connectivity and the bounty of limitless growth, or if it cannot quite muster that illusion, at least the offer of escape into a simulated universe of carnivalesque distraction shepherding us away from the environmental catastrophe our economic system inflicts on the earth. In this series Rioux asks us to reflect on what the clouds hide. There are 18 pieces in the Cloud collection. Each archival pigment print is produced under the supervision of the artist.
