Signature: Signed lower right Edition: 260 This one: 77/260 Condition: Very good Unframed This exceptional geometric abstract serigraph is by the noted Iraqi/American artist George Chemeche (1934-2022 ). He is a master of serigraph printing, but this print has more than technical excellence. It is a wonderful, rhythmic abstract composition. I believe Chemeche might have been a proponent of and/or influenced by the Pattern and Decoration Movement which was happening in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The print has never been framed and is in very good condition. I will ship the print rolled in a heavyweight tube. George Chemeche was born in 1934 and studied at the Avni Art School in Tel Aviv and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. The style with which he is intimately associated, pattern painting, The most serviceable definition is that pattern is the systematic repetition of a motif or motifs used to cover a surface uniformly. The spaces between motifs are either other motifs or are an integral part of the repeat. Usually, patterning intentionally acknowledges the decorative function of art, reconciling both the decorative and the meaningful. George Chemeche’s work hangs in the lobby of the Hotel Chelsea where many have admired it for years. Please search online for more biographical information by this fine artist. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition.
