Postmarked and addressed to Oppenheim's dealer, John Gibson 23 × 16 inches Hand Signed and inscribed by Dennis Oppenheim lower right in blue marker in 2006, hand addressed by Dennis Oppenheim in 1969 in red marker Unframed This is an extremely uncommon vintage poster/mailer announcing the May 20th, 1969 opening reception (Vernissage) for the exhibition of works by American conceptual art pioneer Dennis Oppenheim at the Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris. The poster is historic in that it was originally mailed to John Gibson, the East 67th Street dealer, who famously gave Dennis Oppenheim his first New York exhibition in 1968, and it is hand addressed to Gibson, bearing the original Paris, France postmark of 1969. It is, exceptionally, hand signed and dedicated by Dennis Oppenheim to a collector who acquired the poster from John Gibson's collection, and then secured Dennis Oppenheim's autograph in 2006, making this an especially valuable collectors item. More information about the project from the Tate Gallery archives, which acquired the work: This work brings together two interventions Oppenheim created on a field owned by farmer Albert Waalken in Finsterwolde, north-eastern Holland, in 1969. It comprises four distinct elements mounted on board: a colour photograph of a wheatfield being sowed by a tractor in parallel curving lines seen from high up; a negative image in black and white of a map of the area of Finsterwolde onto which two sections of text have been collaged; and two black and white aerial photographs of the same field being traversed by a tractor cutting an X into the wheat. The first two elements relate to the action Directed Seeding. For this the field was seeded according to a line plotted by following the road from the village of Finsterwolde, the location of the field, to Nieuweschans, another village where the farmer’s storage silo for wheat was located. Oppenheim reduced this curved line by a factor of six in order to direct the trajectory of seeding. The tractor then carved a series of curved parallel lines on the surface of the field as it dug up earth and scattered seed. From an aerial perspective the patterning of parallel lines may be viewed as a form of line drawing on the landscape. The precise location of the field and the silo are indicated on the map, showing the trajectory of the road. The two sections of text collaged onto the upper portion of the map briefly describe the two interventions. Explaining the action Cancelled Crop, the artist wrote: In September the field was harvested in the form of an X. The grain was isolated in its raw state, further processing was withheld. This project poses an interaction upon media during the early stages of processing. Planting and cultivating my own material is like mining ones own pigment (for paint) – I can direct the later stages of development at will. In this case the material is planted and cultivated for the sole purpose of withholding it from a product-oriented system. Isolating this grain from further processing (production of food stuffs) becomes like stopping raw pigment from becoming an illusionistic force on canvas. The esthetic is in the raw material prior to refinement, and since no organization is imposed through refinement, the material’s destiny is bred with its origin. (Quoted from artist’s statement in Tate acquisition file.) Directed Seeding and Cancelled Crop are two separate works, brought together in several different versions of which Tate’s is one. The collage presents three ways in which human action may marks the land. For the first two, agricultural machinery is used to create straight lines, in the process of harvesting as in the X of Cancelled Crop, or curved lines, during the process of planting seed in the contours photographed for Directed Seeding. The map shows a third (and more ancient) way of marking the land, through the construction of roads. The use of the landscape – natural, industrial or urban – as a canvas on which to act is typical of Oppenheim’s work in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In a related action, Directed Harvest, 1966 (Tate T07590) and Directed Harvest 1968 (Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands), the artist caused a field to be harvested in linear patterns which he then had photographed in its progressive stages. In Reverse Processing: Cement Transplant, East River, NY, 1970, 1978 (Tate T07591) Oppenheim drew large crosses on the roofs of barges transporting raw cement that he found moored on the New York East River banks. All these works centre on process as an agent of change and utilise materials, elements and locations on which the artist can have no permanent claim, making them deliberately ephemeral. Such actions as seeding a crop and harvesting it several months later operate within time parameters dependent on the cycles of the seasons rather than the will of man, mixing human processes with those of nature. Oppenheim’s analogy between the prevention of a crop from entering the food chain and the halting of the expressive, ‘illusionistic’ force of paint deconstructs the sophisticated processes of art-making and the food industry to the elemental notion of making simple marks on the environment. This is not signed or numbered. it is from a folio of prints. Laura Fiume was born in Urbino, central Italy in 1953. Her education took place in Milan at the Liceo Artistico and at the Polytechnic School of Design. In 1976 she moved to Canzo, near Como where she learned serigraphy, ceramics, and painting from the well known artist Salvatore Fiume, her father. At the beginning the main subject of her works was that of fishes. She then extended her interest to the wider world of animals, interpreted through a deliberately naïve style and very bright colours. In 1983 Laura’s works were exhibited both at the Basel Art Fair and at Artexpo in New York. The latter marked the beginning of a collaboration with the Work’s II Gallery In Southampton (NY) which would continue until 1988. Her major exhibitions of those years were in Milan at the Palazzo dell’Arengario, now home of the Museo del Novecento in Piazza Duomo, (1985), and in Venice at the Assicurazioni Generali headquarters in Piazza San Marco (1987). In 1983 Laura began her ceramic production in her father’s workshop of Canzo located in a former silk mill. Between 1990 and 1992 thanks to an exclusive agreement with a Japanese company her paintings and graphic works were distributed throughout Japan. The 1990 exhibition at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan on the theme of mirrors was the only occasion in which she exhibited her paintings with her father. Her collaboration with that gallery has been steady since 1988. In 1992, following a suggestion from the well known architect Pepe Tanzi, Laura collaborated to the launch of the Pozzi & Verga new collection of tables and chairs by including images of those pieces of furniture in her own paintings. Between 1992 and 2000 she had her own showroom in Milan where her collections of ceramics and her creations for leading companies like Ricchetti (tiles), Fede Cheti (home fabrics), Edilkamin (fireplaces and stoves), Kaigai (textiles for clothings and bathroom towels), Rosenthal (china), and Proserpio Arredamenti (furnishings and frabrics) were on display. In 1995 she was chosen as Designer of the Year by Meyer Mayor, the distinguished Swiss company specialising in kitchen and table linen production. In the 1995 exhibition entitled Walls and Terracottas at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan abstract most of the subjects were painted on dirt-like materials. In the same year she also presented her new Tableaux an Terre at the L’Ile en terre Gallery of Saint Paul de Vence, France. Between 1996 and 2005 she collaborated with the Edizioni San Paolo Publishers illustrating children’s books and stories for kids in the G-baby Magazine. In 1999 she increased her show-room space by creating Atelier Produzioni d’Arte where prints, ceramics, and sculptures by various international artists were presented. In 2000 Laura began her collaboration with Raika of Japan designing their fashion collections which have been on display since 2002 in the Showroom Laura Fiume at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo. In 2000 Laura designed a collection of coffee cups called The Jungle Collection for Cellini Deutschland. In April 2003, as part of the events that took place during the Salone del Mobile of Milan, Laura held a large exhibition at the Spazio Exté entitled Other Rooms: A Tribute To Philippe Starck. On that occasion Laura enjoyed the collaboration of Alessi, Driade, and Flos who kindly lent her the pieces from their Philippe Starck production represented in her paintings for an installation in that exhibition. In June 2003 Laura held a one-artist exhibition at the Svetog Krševana Gallery in Šibenik, Croatia as part of the International Children’s Festival of that town where she exhibited her early works dedicated to the world of children. In 2005 she gave her contribution to the restyling of the L’Arenella Hotel on the Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, by providing a number of enlarged images of her works which became the characterizing element of the hotel’s interiors. In the summer of the same year she held a retrospective at the Vartai Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 2005 she also presented an installation within the project Ten Arm-chairs for Ten Artists, an initiative by Molteni & C, a leading company in the furniture field, where Laura was asked to decorate a Molteni arm-chair from the Reversi collection and to carry out a number of paintings using the same fabrics covering their couches and arm-chairs. In 2006 there were as many as three exhibitions of Laura’s. The first one, called Visual Amplifications was held in Fiesole, near Florence, in the museum within the St. Alexander Basilica building. The second one, entitled Private Stories, took place in Sansepolcro, Tuscany at the Piero della Francesca City Museum. The third exhibition, entitled Trame d’interni (Plots in Interiors) was hosted in Milan by the Artesanterasmo Gallery where Laura presented her new paintings on fabrics provided by well known fabric producer Enzo degli Angiuoni. In 2007 she exhibited her works in Rome at the Galleria Margutta 3 and then at the trendy TAD Conceptstore showroom of Via del Babuino. Both exhibitions were strictly connected through the idea of displaying works in harmony with TAD’s furnishings. In 2007 Laura was also invited to take part in Milan’s Cow Parade...

Hand signed posters by Kapoor are quite elusive. The poster is two sided as it was published on the occasion of the artist's participation in the 1990 Venice Biennale (the verso has his lengthy biography), and it bears the original folds as issued. British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor was chosen to represent Britain at the first Biennale of the 1990s. He had been exhibiting since 1980 but it was this show that brought him widespread recognition on the international stage. Sixteen huge sandstone blocks dominated the Pavilion’s main room; they were so heavy that the floor had to be reinforced with supports. Kapoor had started working in stone in the late 1980s and each block in Void Field (1989) has a hole filled with another motif in his work, the powdered blue pigment used in Indian religious ceremonies. The same vibrant tones, which was also inspired also by Yves Klein’s statement bold blue colour, were used in his low-lying slate sculpture, A Wing at the Heart of Things (1990), in the back gallery of the Pavilion; this work is now part of Tate’s collection. “Venice is an interchange of East and West, reflecting the way Kapoor borrows from both cultures” said Henry Meyric Hughes, British Council.
