An original signed etching with aquatint on Rives BFK paper by French-Swiss artist Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) (1887-1965) titled "Unité, Planche 19", 1965. Hand pencil signed by Le Corbusier lower right and numbered lower left. Limited edition: VI/XXX, (6/30). As issued, the first 10 examples of this particular rare Roman Numeral edition was accompanied by a second non-colored (black and white) version which is hand-numbered in an edition: VI/X, (6/10). Printed by Atelier Crommelynck and published by Editions A. C. Mazo & Mie both in Paris, France. The "Unité" portfolio was completed in Paris, October 15th, 1965. Sheet size: 22.25" x 17.75". Image size: 16.25" x 12.5". Provenance: private collection South Africa estate, acquired the complete suite from a gallery in Switzerland in the 1970's. It has never been framed, stored in its original issued box by Crommelynck since its inception. Excellent condition. Extremely rare, scarce two piece set. There were 3 editions printed for the "Unité" suite: 1. 130 arabic numbered copies on Rives paper. 2. 30 copies reserved to the artist and collaborators, numbered in roman numerals: I - XXX. (The edition offered here*). 3. 65 copies reserved for the publisher: A. C. Mazo and Cie. Le Corbusier was visionary writer, theorist, and architect, and a lesser-known painter. Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, he adopted his moniker when he began to author architectural designs and paintings. He had a fascination with proportion, modularity, and geometry, often taking his cue from classical architecture theory. His designs, however, were modernist and industrial. He fondly called houses “machines for living in,” and said that the base principal for design is that “it must be beautiful.” Le Corbusier was interested in solving what he called the problem of urban co-habitation, and produced a great number of designs for houses and apartment buildings. Le Corbusier worked at the atelier of Peter Behrens, the training grounds of other architectural masters like Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius.

About Le Corbusier (Artist)

Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier, was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades. A pioneer of progress-minded modern architecture, Le Corbusier sought to impose a rational order on the chaos of the world through design. He rejected the excessive architectural ornament and developed a style that became known as Brutalism, creating buildings with elemental geometric forms that were made of industrial materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. Le Corbusier believed that pure, well-designed spaces could offer a lesson in how little is needed to achieve happiness. To convey this notion, the architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underlining the beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity.

     Le Corbusier’s furniture espouses these same ideals. His designs are spare, minimal and efficient but at the same time offer supreme comfort. Collaborating with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and designer Charlotte Perriand, he devised such iconic pieces as the LC2 Le Grand Confort armchair and the LC4 chaise longue. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design. In his furniture, Le Corbusier broke new ground in ergonomics. The shape of the LC4 chaise is taken directly from the human form; the classic cowhide upholstery makes the sitter feel weightless; and the piece features an adjustable positioning mechanism to promote total relaxation.

     Such planning and intelligence were the hallmarks of Le Corbusier’s career. Whether in his designs for private residences such as the Villa Savoye near Paris, apartment towers like the Unité D'habitation in Marseilles, or in his furniture, he worked toward a style of living that was expansive and flexible. The strength and simplicity of line of Le Corbusier’s seating pieces give them a sculptural presence in any décor, yet they are sublimely restful. And as you will see from the offerings on these pages, Le Corbusier’s furniture reflects a worldly taste: it is at once refined, cosmopolitan and chic.
