Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Charlottesville, VA / South Africa; the complete boxed portfolio acquired from a gallery in Switzerland in the 1970's. Numbered by Le Corbusier in pencil lower left. The very first 10 examples of this particular Roman Numeral edition of 30 was accompanied with a second printing of only the etching in black (without the color aquatint) which is also numbered "VI/X" by Le Corbusier in pencil lower left. These first 10 sets of 2 works are the rarest and most valuable from the entire tirage. The twenty images of the "Unité" portfolio engraved between 1963-1965 are based on a series of chalk pastel drawings Le Corbusier executed in 1953, thus the engraved printed date of "53" in each plate. The "Unité" portfolio was completed in Paris, France on October 15th, 1965.
The complete tirage of the 1965 "Unité" portfolio is comprised of three editions:
1. 130 Arabic signed and numbered copies on Rives paper: 1/130 - 130/130
2. 30 Roman Numeral signed and numbered copies on Rives paper: I/XXX - XXX/XXX. The very first 10 of these 30 sets (I/XXX - X/XXX) were reserved for Le Corbusier and his collaborators and contained an additional printing of only the etching in black (without the color aquatint) which is also numbered in roman numerals (I/X - X/X). Only 17 of these 20 additional printings of only the etching in black (without the color aquatint) were completed before Le Corbusier's death in 1965. *Our example here is from this edition.
3. 65 copies reserved for the publisher: A. C. Mazo and Cie
Biography:
Le Corbusier was visionary writer, theorist, and architect, and a lesser-known painter. Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, he adopted his moniker when he began to author architectural designs and paintings. He had a fascination with proportion, modularity, and geometry, often taking his cue from classical architecture theory. His designs, however, were modernist and industrial. He fondly called houses “machines for living in,” and said that the base principal for design is that “it must be beautiful.” Le Corbusier was interested in solving what he called the problem of urban co-habitation, and produced a great number of designs for houses and apartment buildings. Le Corbusier worked at the atelier of Peter Behrens, the training grounds of other architectural masters like Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius.

Le Corbusier
Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier, was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades.
A pioneer of progress-minded modern architecture, Le Corbusier sought to impose a rational order on the chaos of the world through design. He rejected the excessive architectural ornament and developed a style that became known as brutalism, creating buildings with elemental geometric forms that were made of industrial materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. Le Corbusier believed that pure, well-designed spaces could offer a lesson in how little is needed to achieve happiness. To convey this notion, the architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underlining the beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity.
Le Corbusier’s furniture espouses these same ideals. His designs are spare, minimal and efficient but at the same time offer supreme comfort. Collaborating with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and trailblazing designer Charlotte Perriand, he devised such iconic pieces as the LC2 Petit Confort armchair and the LC4 chaise longue. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design. In his furniture, Le Corbusier broke new ground in ergonomics. The shape of the LC4 chaise is taken directly from the human form; the classic cowhide upholstery makes the sitter feel weightless; and the piece features an adjustable positioning mechanism to promote total relaxation.
Such planning and intelligence were the hallmarks of Le Corbusier’s career. Whether in his designs for private residences such as the Villa Savoye near Paris, apartment towers like the Unité D'habitation in Marseilles, or in his furniture, he worked toward a style of living that was expansive and flexible. The strength and simplicity of line of Le Corbusier’s sofas and other seating pieces give them a sculptural presence in any décor, yet they are sublimely restful. An artist associated with surrealism, he is one of the most important figures in 20th century art, representing the archetype of the spectacular contemporary multifaceted artist. He develops his creative activity in various fields through the most diverse cultural formulas: painting, written media, performing arts, cinema, or public appearances in the press, radio, cinema, advertising, television, etc. Master of the most refined pictorial technique, especially drawing, along with various aesthetic languages - from impressionism, cubism, purism or late ultraism with Dadaist edges to the most radical surrealism, hyperrealism, pop-art or art optical—, will absorb every influence that is useful to build its own and personal language, halfway between technical tradition and thematic avant-garde. His paranoid-critical method is his main contribution to the surrealist movement and to the history of art as a new creative model with which Dalí's theories acquire theoretical entity - thanks to the successive interpretations that the Empordà artist made of his readings of Dalí's work. Sigmund Freud—and practice, applying it as a revealing liquid of images that can be represented plastically through multiple images, anamorphisms, relational mirages, irrational and heterogeneous symbolic images, pseudohallucinations, childhood memories, atavisms, obsessive ideas, etc., and recreating a polyphonic method capable of critically relating any visual or sensitive experience. With his method, Dalí makes paranoid delirium a whole mode of expression of an art that introduces us to the concrete irrationality that inhabits every creative process, constructing not only his works, but also his own character. as an artist. In Dalí, the relationship between his work and his personal history becomes evident. Much of the most significant biographical facts for the artist are implicitly or explicitly present in the content of his work and are the explanation of his complex and contradictory personality. In 1910, at the age of 6, he was enrolled by his father in the Hispano-French school of the Immaculate Conception of Figueres, where he learned French, his future language of culture. Dalí's first contact with Impressionism occurred in 1916, when he spent some time on the outskirts of Figueres, specifically at the Molí de la Torre estate, property of the Pichot family (intellectuals and artists), where he was the collection of the painter Ramón Pichot. In 1919 he participated for the first time in a group exhibition in the halls of the Societat de Concerts, and with a group of friends from the institute founded the magazine Studium, in which he published his first writings. A year later he moved to Madrid to study at the School of Fine Arts. In 1922 he won his first prize at the Concurs-exposició d'obres d'art originals d'students, held at the Galeries Dalmau (Barcelona).
