Dennis Corrigan
Dennis Corrigan, Nathaniel Hawthorne Posing with a Formally Dressed Gopher, 1978

About the Item

Dennis Corrigan gives us a fresh, admittedly whimsical, interpretation of the important nineteenth-century American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Known to most of us for the 'dark romanticism' of his hugely important and successful Scarlet Letter, of 1850, Hawthorne is shown in front of an idyllic, renaissance-inspired, small-town American landscape. Heavily (or 'well'?) armed, he's ready for anything. And his uniform is particularly elaborate. This print was published by Associated American Artists, reference Windisch & Cole 2457, in an edition of 250 impressions. It's great to be able to say 'I was there.' It added an unusual element of the surreal to works we were featuring and I knew it would be a huge success. It's in excellent condition and is signed and numbered in pencil.
