The magnificent scale of this work truly allows us to step into the surreal reality that Miró creates in La Harpie. It is an absolute world full of color, whimsical imagery, and bright, bold shapes. Our imagination runs wild as we see this make-shift witch with her pointed hat and bold, characteristic expression. Surrounded with Miró’s iconic starbursts and blotches of purple, green, red, and yellow, this piece is surely one not to be missed. Unique to the print itself, is the textured Carborundum which has been meticulously applied, giving the work an added three-dimensional quality unlike any other print produced during this period.
Created in 1969, this color etching & aquatint with Carborundum is hand signed by Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) in pencil in the lower right. This work is numbered 34/75 in pencil in the bottom left margin. Printed by Morsang, Paris on Arches paper and published by Maeght éditeur, Paris.

Framed to museum-grade, conservation standards, Joan Miro La Harpie (The Harpy), 1969 is presented in a complementary moulding and finished with silk-wrapped mats and optical grade Plexiglas.
Joan Miró
With his wide-ranging oeuvre, comprising strikingly original paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, metal engravings and murals, Catalan modernist Joan Miró was a critical force in moving 20th-century art toward complete abstraction. Although often considered an early Surrealist because of his nonobjective imagery and evocation of the subconscious, he defies neat categorization.
Miró’s identity is largely rooted in the city of his birth: Barcelona. To this day, a number of his public artworks can be found there, including the 72-foot-tall statue Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird), 1983. Female and avian forms, along with bright colors and the theme of Catalan pride, are recurring elements in his work.
The radical visual world Miró created with his expressive lines, signature symbols and biomorphic shapes influenced such American Abstract Expressionists as Jackson Pollock and Color Field painters like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman.
Mirò continued to work and experiment until his death at the age of 90 in 1983. Five years before that, he was quoted saying, “I painted these paintings in a frenzy, with real violence so that people will know that I am alive, that I’m breathing, that I still have a few more places to go. I’m heading in new directions.”

The bird is Georges Braque's calling card. When the 70-year-old artist was commissioned to create monumental decorations for the Louvre, he chose the bird as his subject. This winged animal appears again and again in his oeuvre, but its representation is noteworthy in this print. To those who would say that Braque is not a draftsman, Dora Vallier writes, "for [him], drawing is not a means of giving outward appearance to forms but of showing what lies within." Along the same lines, Braque himself says, "Forget things, only remember their relationship." These two statements encourage thoughtful viewing.
Coming back to its nest and hatched egg, a great black bird is hardly visible against the dark green of its home and the brown leaves behind. Rather than spend time on the details, Braque emphasizes the spatial arrangement of the scene. Everything is compressed down to one level; the curtain of heart-shaped leaves blends together as it falls toward the nest. Braque sees how the tree, nest and bird interrelate, and this entwined relationship is what he chooses to show.
Created circa 1950, this original color etching is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 281/300 in pencil in the lower left margin. The edition was printed by Atelier Krommelinck, Paris on Rives paper, and published by Maeght, Paris.
