Louis Ridel, born February 12, 1866 in Vannes and died November 10, 1937 in Paris, is a painter, sculptor, medalist, French decorator. Louis Ridel studied at the Académie Julian then under the direction of Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1889 (with Matisse, Camoin, Marquet and Rouault). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1893 and 1935, at the Salon des Tuileries between 1927 and 1934, the Universal Exhibition of Ghent in 1913 and the famous Georges Petit Gallery (1909-1910). The works of the artist are present in the museums of Nantes, Strasbourg, Pont-Aven but also Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. This symbolist painter, friend of Aman-Jean, Maxence and Albert Besnard, represented essentially women of the bourgeoisie, ethereal and diaphanous or landscapes of his native region, Brittany. In 1896, he received an honorable mention from the Salon des artistes français, then a third class medal in 1898 and second class in 1900. In 1901, he was out of competition. Shungo Sekiguchi, (Japanese, 1911-2002): Lithograph in color on Rives paper Hand signed in pencil lower right, hand numbered It appears to be the village of Montmarte in Paris This was published by the Guilde de la Gravure, Paris, France and bears their GG blindstamp. They were a mid century French art publisher and published many masters including Raoul Dufy, Max Erns, Jean Hans Arp, Ruffino Tamayo, Balthus, Gino Severini and Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita. Shungo Sekiguchi was born 1911 in Japan. In 1932 Shungo Sekiguchi contributed to the print series "One Hundred Views of Great Tokyo" (Dai Tokyo hyakkei). Prints from watercolors published by Kaneda Shoten (Nihon Hanga Ken-kyusho). In 1935, Sekiguchi moved to Paris, France to study at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Art of France with a scholarship of the French government. He studied together with two other Ecole de Paris Japanese artists, Takanori Ogisu and Tsuguji Foujita. He exhibited at the prestigious "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. In 1940 when Paris was occupied by the German Nazis, Shungo Sekiguchi returned to Japan, but kept his ties with France. In 1952 he exhibited at the famous Salon d'Automne and received an award. In 1959, he received an award at the Vicci International Art Contest. In 1964, he received the Diplome d'Honneur des at Jobiji International Art Show. His retrospective exhibition has been held in many places in Japan. In 2002 the artist died in Japan. He is popular in Japan and several retrospective exhibitions were held in Japan. He was part of the Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga woodblock artists known for their woodcut prints and scrolls. Shin-hanga was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods. He also worked as a book illustrator and did the artwork for the French edition of Le démon doré by Ozaki Kohyo. He is included in Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's classic book "Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock...

Born in Paris, France in 1883, Paul Rollon "Pola" Gauguin was the youngest of artist Paul Gauguin's (1848-1903) five legitimate children. Signed lower right, 'Arbit Blatas' (Lithuanian, 1908-1999) and with number and limitation, '123/195', lower left. Lithuanian born, Arbit Blatas first studied in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and, subsequently, at the Academie Julian. He was a member of the Salon d'Automne where he also exhibited. Other exhibition venues included the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Santa Barbara Museum and the Rhode Island School of Design. An artist of great range, his vivid colors and joie de vivre extend through his entire canon of paintings: landscapes, portraits and still-lives. The distinguished French art critic, Jean Bouret, summed the artist up in this way: "He is color, his palette is color, exuberant and sensual, as is the man." On the other end of Blatas' artistic spectrum, the noted Italian art historian Enzo di Martini wrote of the Monument of the Holocaust: "In complete contrast to his paintings, these bronzes are hammered and chiseled in anger and tragedy." In 1929 he began to exhibit regularly at the Salon D'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries in Paris. At the age of twenty-one, he became the youngest member of the School of Paris and a friend and colleague to many of the great figures in the Parisian art world such as Vlaminck, Utrillo, Soutine, Picasso, Derain and Matisse. Blatas eventually painted or sculpted them all and his forty-nine portraits in oil and bronze are considered a unique document of that period in Paris. The artist exhibited regularly in the principal galleries of New York, Paris and London. His works are also included in some of the most valued private international art collections.
