About the Item

Belle Époque lithograph of Folies Bergère: Fleur de Lotus by Jules Chéret, published in 1896 by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris. While Fleur de Lotus was printed in multiple sizes and formats, this extremely scarce edition of 25 strikes on Japon paper from 1896 is the most desirable. The rare, small format poster lithographs created at this time were printed using rich, dense, lead inks, and the special Japon paper editions allowed the inks to rest upon its surface rather than being absorbed by a more permeable paper stock, resulting in a superior, jewellery-like boldly colored strike. This artwork is presented in archival rag mat and arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Charles Hiatt notes in his 1895 book Picture Posters, “It may be that men of rarer, of more fascinating, talent have now and again devoted themselves to the [poster]; but none of them can compare with Chéret in the magnitude and curiosity of his achievement. Many have produced charming wall pictures: nobody, save Chéret, has made an emphatic mark on the aspect of a metropolis. Paris, without its Chérets, would be Paris without one of its most pronounced characteristics; Paris, moreover, with its gaiety of aspect materially diminished. The great masses of variegated colour formed by Chéret‘s posters greet one joyously as one passes every hoarding, smile at one from the walls of every café, arrest one before the windows of every kiosque.” “There was something positively alluring in the spectacle of a man who calmly placed his gift at the disposal of the tradesman, who accepted without murmur the limitations which the tradesman imposed upon him. It is possible that, had it not been for the circumstances of his life, the streets of Paris would have remained undecorated so far as she Chéret was concerned, to this day.” (Hiatt, 1895) “Chéret executed more than 60 posters for the Folies Bergère, between 1874, when the first major expansion of the business took place (there was an even bigger one in 1926), and in 1897, the very zenith of its success. The names of the reviews hardly matter, as all were met mainly to present beautiful girls in attractive settings, and for Fleur de Lotus, ceramics spectacularly exuberant design, a masterpiece of graceful emotion and pure joy.” (Rennert, 1990) Notable museum collections containing this work include: High Museum of Art, Atlanta Notable museum collections featuring works by Jules Chéret include: Musée d'Orsay, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C; and more.

Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater: "Hallowed Be Thy Name" 1899 sepia lithograph
By Alphonse Mucha
Located in Chicago, IL
Stone lithograph sepia plate of Hallowed Be Thy Name from Alphonse Mucha’s masterpiece of mysticism, Le Pater. Printed by F. Champenois, published by Henri Piazza in Paris in an edition of 510, 1899. “Le Pater is the perfect convergence of three important movements at the close of the 19th century: Art Nouveau, Mysticism, and Religion. Art Nouveau, through its respect and honor of Nature, promotes the idea of a spirit of energy coursing through all things–a tenet of Mysticism–that finds foundation in the traditions of Mucha's personal relationship with the imagery of Religion. Le Pater gave Mucha a venue to communicate his beliefs specifically through his unique approach to Art and the coded language he had been learning through his devotion to Masonic teachings. He combined the aesthetics of Medieval manuscripts...

Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater: "Thy Kingdom Come" 1899 mandala lithograph
By Alphonse Mucha
Located in Chicago, IL
Stone lithograph mandala plate of Thy Kingdom Come from Alphonse Mucha’s masterpiece of mysticism, Le Pater. He combined the aesthetics of Medieval manuscripts with Moorish arabesques, Byzantine mandalas, and Classical Renaissance melodrama to create a body of work that guided viewers across the gap between the ancient and the modern. The published plates for Le Pater were struck by Champenois on December 20, 1899 in an edition of 510 copies with the express agreement that they never be reprinted. As much of Mucha's work had been commercialized by Champenois due to numerous printings across multiple mediums, by this point he felt he had earned the right to insist on this deeply personal work existing only in the original release he had envisioned. The title page, prayer plates, and illuminated manuscript pages...

Harper's July, The German Struggle for Liberty original art nouveau poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Spokane, WA
Original Harper's July vintage poster; The German Struggle for Liberty. Original turn of the century lithograph by Edward Penfield. Size: 14 1/8" x 21 18" Penfield created this poster to publicize Bigelow’s lengthy history of the Germanic people, serialized in the Monthly as “the first popular interpretation ever given to the rehabilitation of Germany through the uprising of the German people against the Napoleanic invasion.” July’s number began the series, which was published by Harper and Brothers as a two-volume set in 1896. Harper's June 1895 HARPER’S The German Struggle for Liberty JULY [Poster for Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Jul 1895]. German soldier at the guardhouse. Four-color lithograph: grey, blue, yellow, and red. New York: Harper & Brothers, published Jun 1895. The magazine Harper's, issue of July, confronts the problems of The German Struggle for Liberty. Shown a German soldier in a helmet and armed with a rifle stands tall, and yet an uneasiness appears on his face. At a closer look, one will notice that not only does the soldier grasp his rifle in support, but in despair. This Harper's July is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed. An restored fold mark across the middle of the image keeps this image from being rated higher (for an original 1895 poster).
