Hungerford Foot Bridge spans the River Thames in London, between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. Eby visited Great Britain and France during 1924 and 1925. ABOUT THE ARTIST Kerr Eby was born in 1890 in Tokyo, Japan, the son of Methodist missionaries from Canada. The family returned to Vancouver when Eby was only three, and he grew up studying art encouraged by his parents as his mother was from a family of prominent artists. By age twelve, he had lived in Vancouver, Kingston, Toronto and Bracebridge where he found work as a ‘printer’s devil’ on the local Bracebridge newspaper. After graduating from high school in 1907, Eby moved to New York City to study art, first at the Pratt Institute, and later at the Art Students League. He enrolled in art classes at Pratt Institute while working for a lithographic firm earning $4.00 a week. His pay barely covered his room and drawing supplies. Within a year, starving and feeling defeated, he returned to Canada and was employed by a surveying party in Northern Ontario. Eby gradually regained his dream of becoming an artist, and in his spare time, he began to draw the surrounding wilderness landscapes. By fall he had returned to New York to attend night classes at the Art Students League while working for another lithographic firm. He spent several more summers surveying in Northern Ontario before he was able to make a living as an illustrator. During this period he formed several friendships with influential artists including John Henry Twachtman and Childe Hassam and joined a summer artists' colony founded by them at Cos Cob, Connecticut. He supported himself by working as a magazine illustrator and at the American Lithographic Company. Through diligent study and practice, Eby refined both his drawing and printmaking techniques. In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, Eby joined the U.S. Army. Failing to obtain a commission as an artist, he was assigned first to ambulance duty and later as a sergeant in the 40th Engineers in France. He spent most of WWI on the front line as a camouflager of the field artillery ‘big guns”. On his time off duty, he would sketch everything he witnessed, from the explosive big guns and men in action to the dead soldiers in the field. He sent the drawings home each week, and upon his return from the war, they became the basis for his first successful group of etchings. He continued creating his war-related prints throughout the 1920s and '30s as his work became widely exhibited Frederick Keppel, the renowned print dealer and a relative of Eby, became the exclusive agent for many of his print editions. This work depicts Serra's iconic permanent installation in the desert of Brouq Qatar: East-West/West-East, which has become a famous landmark in Qatar since its installation in 2014. According to the Jewish-born Richard Serra, he had been visiting Qatar for about 12 years, during which he was introduced to the Chairperson of the Qatari Museums Authority and the sister of the new Emir, Sheikha Mayassa, by the architect of the Museum of Islamic Art, IM Pei. It was Sheikh Mayassathat who urged Serra to build a sculpture in the desert. The artist once said it was the most important thing he had ever done. In 2020 the Serra sculpture was famously vandalized. This hand signed print has superb provenance as it was donated directly by the artist to a major charitable foundation and is accompanied by a documentation from a Foundation as well as a COA from the gallery. Richard Serra biography: Obsession is what it comes down to. It is difficult to think without obsession, and it is impossible to create something without a foundation that is rigorous, incontrovertible, and, in fact, to some degree repetitive. In order to work you must already be working. —Richard Serra One of the most significant artists of his generation, he has produced large-scale, site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Richard Serra lives and works in New York and on the North Fork of Long Island. Serra attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a BA in English literature; he then studied painting at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut completing both a BFA and MFA. He began showing with Leo Castelli in 1968, and his first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Leo Castelli Warehouse the following year. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, in 1970. Serra’s sculptures and drawings have been celebrated with two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, twenty years apart: Richard Serra/Sculpture (1986) and Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years (2007). A fine and early state impression from an almost unparralled 19th century Parisian collection curated by Loys Delteil. Etching, drypoint, and roulette on buff laid Japon paper, 5 7/16 x 9 13/16 inches (137 × 249 mm) full margins. In very good condition with light and unobtrusive scattered foxing. Some pencil inscriptions in the margins, recto, as well as the Alfred Beurdeley collection stamp (Lugt 421) in black ink in the lower left margin on the recto. There are some light scattered inscriptions in pencil on the verso, as well as a numerical stamp in blue ink, which we believe is the lot number from part III of a well-known series of sales of Beurdeley's collection organized by Loys Delteil. This portion of the sale of Beurdeley's massive collection focused on Modern Prints, and took place on May 19 – 20, 1920, in Paris.
