Rrose Sélavy in Wilson-Lincoln System Lenticular print (Schwarz 344) Signed 8/60
Located in New York, NY
Marcel Duchamp and by Takiguchi Rrose Sélavy (Marcel Duchamp) in Wilson-Lincoln System (Schwarz, 344), 1967 Lenticular print on thin white board. Hand signed by Marcel Duchamp. Date, title and number on label verso. 12 7/10 × 10 1/10 inches Edition 8/60 Hand-signed by artist, Hand signed by Marcel Duchamp in blue ink recto. Sticker label verso bears printed title, edition number, year and description. Printed by Shuzo Takiguchi, published in Tokyo. Catalogue Raisonne Reference: "The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp" by Arturo Schwarz, Plate 344 Provenance: This was part of the Deluxe Artist portfolio, "To and From Rrose Sélavy"; this will be the first time the work has been separated from the portfolio Please refer to the attached video to see this 3-D piece in person Eager to share Marcel Duchamp with Japanese audiences, Shuzo Takiguchi - a Japanese-born poet, critic, and artist with ties to Surrealist circles, assembled an international portfolio of graphic works by various artists with strong ties to Duchamp, to accompany the deluxe version of his monograph, "To and From Rrose Sélavy (aka Marcel Duchamp)." The present work - Takiguchi's own piece, a lenticular double portrait - combines Rrose Sélavy's signature with Man Ray's 1930 profile of Duchamp. Its subject, Marcel Duchamp, then signed this work in pencil. Its title, "Rrose Sélavy in the Wilson-Lincoln System", refers to Duchamp's Green Box note describing a two-way, changeable portrait of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. Rrose Selavy is, famously, Marcel Duchamp's pseudonym and alter ego. Duchamp died before Takiguchi's book was completed, so this print is one of the very last graphic works that has been hand signed by Marcel Duchamp. It was published in Japan, and is a very elusive work stateside. Another edition of this work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The National Portrait Gallery and other major institutional collections. This work is fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne "The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp" by Arturo Schwarz, Plate 344, describing the work as follows: "Rrose Selavy in the Wilson Lincoln System (a double image plastic plate with, on the background, Man Ray's portrait of Duchamp, and superimposed,, Rrose Selavy's autograph signature repeated four times, signed lower right in blue ink: Marcel Duchamp, an original embossed print...." More about Marcel Duchamp: Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp was born July 28, 1887, near Blainville, France. In 1904, he joined his artist brothers, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, in Paris, where he studied painting at the Académie Julian until 1905. Duchamp’s early works were Post-Impressionist in style. He exhibited for the first time in 1909 at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. His paintings of 1911 were directly related to Cubism but emphasized successive images of a single body in motion. In 1912, he painted the definitive version of Nude Descending a Staircase; this was shown at the Salon de la Section d’Or of that same year and subsequently created great controversy at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Duchamp’s radical and iconoclastic ideas predated the founding of the Dada movement in Zurich in 1916. By 1913, he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for various experimental forms, including mechanical drawings, studies, and notations that would be incorporated in a major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–23; also known as The Large Glass). In 1914, Duchamp introduced his readymades—common objects, sometimes altered, presented as works of art—which had a revolutionary impact upon many painters and sculptors. In 1915, Duchamp traveled to New York, where his circle included Katherine Dreier and Man Ray, with whom he founded the Société Anonyme in 1920, as well as Louise and Walter Arensberg, Francis Picabia, and other avant-garde figures. After playing chess avidly for nine months in Buenos Aires, Duchamp returned to France in the summer of 1919 and associated with the Dada group in Paris. In New York in 1920, he made his first motor-driven constructions and invented Rrose Sélavy, his feminine alter ego. Duchamp moved back to Paris in 1923 and seemed to have abandoned art...

Everything's Going to be Alright (Work No. 3531), Signed/N print in archival box
By Martin Creed
Located in New York, NY
Martin Creed Everything's Going to be Alright (Work No. 3531), 2022 Color giclee print; unframed and housed in a bespoke archival box from Hauser & Wirth 11 3/4 × 16 1/2 inches Pencil signed, titled and numbered 141/200 Makes a perfect gift! Provenance: Hauser & Wirth, at The Fife Arms (Beaemar Castle) A wonderful print with an affirmation worth seeing in any room in the house! Note: this work is pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of 200, and it comes inside of a bespoke box, as it was first issued by Hauser & Wirth. The number shown in the image here may not be the number you receive. In 2020, as part of the post-lockdown re-opening celebrations for Scotland's Fife Arms, Hauser & Wirth's owners unveiled a specially commissioned temporary neon installation, ‘Work No. 3435: EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT’ by one of their favorite artists, Turner Prize-winner Martin Creed. This colorful installation was situated on the grounds of nearby Braemar Castle. The message resonates well beyond the pandemic. It makes a terrific gift. (Martin Creed, who grew up in Glasgow, is particularly known in Scotland for the much-loved Scotsman Steps in Edinburgh, a public staircase joining two streets made with more than a hundred different types of marble. A work in blue neon, ‘Work No. 975: EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT’, has been on view since 2012 on the facade of the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. The phrase ‘Everything is going to be alright’ has been used by the artist in a series of large-scale neon works since 1999 and draws on the comforting words Creed was offered by a friend. He explains, “If you are upset and someone speaks to you to try to help you, even if the words are empty because no one knows what is going to happen in the future, it can still feel like a comfort. No-one can really tell you everything is going to be alright, but despite that, many times in my life I have been very comforted by people saying something like that to me.”) And all this brings us back to the present work, a limited edition 2022 color giclee print, pencil signed and numbered by Martin Creed, which depicts Creed's pandemic-era temporary light installation with the neon words Everything is Going to Be Alright, against the backdrop of Braemar Castle at nightfall. This edition was originally sold by Hauser & Wirth via the Fife Arms to raise funds to restore Braemar Castle - and it quickly sold out. It's a poignant message that continues to resonate, perhaps now more than ever - and it would look beautiful in any home or office. But the question remains: Should we really believe Martin Creed's message? The answer is a resounding Yes. Coming from some of the most successful and lucky people on earth (Martin Creed and Manuela and Iwan Wirth) and carrying the magical energy and history of Braemar Castle, the odds are looking pretty good that everything is indeed going to be alright with all that positivity! By the way, just for fun (because why not?) keep scrolling (right arrow to the right of the main image) to view a 2019 photograph of King Charles and Queen Camilla (then officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when in Scotland) attending the opening of The Fife Arms, with Manuela and Iwan Wirth standing next to them on the left - all in Highland dress. More about Martin Creed: British sculptor and installation artist. He was born in Wakefield, grew up in Scotland, and studied at the *Slade School of Art. His works are generally sparse in their material form and are identified only by numbers so as not to impose associations. (For this reason his numbering system avoids the portentous No. 1.) He is best known for the work for which he was awarded the *Turner Prize in 2002, Work no. 227 (2000, MoMA, New York). An entire room is alternately lit and darkened by electric light. It is a way of making a work of art which has no material existence: the light and the darkness are not themselves the art, only the change between them. This is a work which has entered the mythology of ‘modern art’ stories: the river boat guide tells the tourists (quite incorrectly) as they pass *Tate Modern: about the empty room...

Premiere Exhibition Selections from Tyler Graphics, 23 September '84 to 17 May '85." This elegant work, produced with the highest quality lithography by Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics, was created in a limited quantity solely for VIP collectors at that one day's event as it was a true one-off creation. Not too many of them have survived a quarter century on, and rarely in such good condition. Not too many people you know can boast that they possess a Frank Stella shopping bag. Andersen (Printer) Philip Barber (Printer) Hang Nguyen (Printer) Stephanie Nowack (Printer) Michael Reid (Printer) Daniel Rounds (Printer) Vermillion Editions Limited (Publisher) Sam Gilliam Biography: Sam Gilliam was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed. As an artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change. Gilliam pursued a pioneering course in which experimentation was the only constant. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. In addition to a traveling retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2005, Sam Gilliam was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Philip Morris Branch, New York (1993); J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (1996); Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. A semi-permanent installation of Gilliam’s paintings opened at Dia:Beacon in August 2019. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Makes a superb gift! Published on the occasion of these exhibitions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art(04/11/11-08/28/11) San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (10/15/11-01/16/12) The Menil Collection (03/02/12–06/10/12) Book information: Published by Yale University Press, CO, and The Menil Collection, Houston. English; Hardback; 232 pages with 160 quadratone illustrations Publisher's blurb: As the focal point of numerous high-profile exhibitions, the sculpture of Richard Serra (b. 1939) has drawn international acclaim. Yet even those who have marveled at Serra's intellectually rigorous and large works of sculpture may not be familiar with his equally intriguing drawings. This handsome book brings together for the first time Serra's drawn work, considering the artist's investigation of medium as an activity both independent from and linked to his pioneering sculptural practice. First working in ink, charcoal, and lithographic crayon on paper, Serra originally used drawing as a means to explore form and perceptual relations between his sculpture and the viewer. Over time, his drawings underwent significant shifts in concept, materials, and scale and became fully realized and autonomous works of art. The grand, bold forms he created with black paintstick in his monumental Installation Drawings were designed to disrupt and complement existent spaces and eventually began to occupy entire rooms. In the late 1980s, Serra explored the tension of weight and gravity through layering, and his most recent work experiments with surface effects, using mesh screens as intermediaries between the gesture and the transfer of pigment to paper. More about Richard Serra: Obsession is what it comes down to. It is difficult to think without obsession, and it is impossible to create something without a foundation that is rigorous, incontrovertible, and, in fact, to some degree repetitive. Repetition is the ritual of obsession. Repetition is a way to jumpstart the indecision of beginning. To persevere and to begin over and over again is to continue the obsession with work. Work comes out of work. In order to work you must already be working. —Richard Serra One of the most significant artists of his generation, he has produced large-scale, site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Richard Serra lives and works in New York and on the North Fork of Long Island. Serra attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a BA in English literature; he then studied painting at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut completing both a BFA and MFA. He began showing with Leo Castelli in 1968, and his first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Leo Castelli Warehouse the following year. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, in 1970. Serra’s sculptures and drawings have been celebrated with two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, twenty years apart: Richard Serra/Sculpture (1986) and Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years (2007). He has had solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1977–78); Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany (1978); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (1978); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1980, 2014, and 2017); Centre Pompidou, Paris (1983–84); Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, Germany (1985); Louisiana Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark (1986); Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Münster, Germany (1987); Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (1987); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands (1988); Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Netherlands (1990); Kunsthaus Zürich (1990); CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France (1990); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1992); Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (1992); Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1997); Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro (1997–98); Trajan’s Market, Rome (1999–2000); Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St. Louis (2003); and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy (2004). In 2005 The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a series of eight large-scale works, was installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain. For Monumenta 2008, the major site-specific installation Promenade was shown at the Grand Palais, Paris. Three years later the large-scale, site-specific sculpture 7 was permanently installed opposite the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. A major traveling retrospective dedicated to Serra’s drawings was presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Menil Collection, Houston (the organizing venue), from 2011 to 2012. In 2014 the Qatar Museums Authority presented a two-venue retrospective survey of Serra’s work, and East-West/West-East (2014) was permanently installed in the Brouq Nature Reserve, Zekreet, Qatar. In 2017 the Museum Wiesbaden, Germany, presented Richard Serra: Props, Films, Early Works; an overview of Serra’s work in film and video was shown at the Kunstmuseum Basel; and recent drawings were featured at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Serra has participated in numerous major international exhibitions, including Documenta (1972, 1977, 1982, and 1987), and the Biennale di Venezia (1980, 1984, 2001, and 2013), and his work has been included in many Whitney Annuals and Biennials (1968, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1995, and 2006).
