Masuo Ikeda is well known a Japanese painter, printmaker, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, novelist, and film director. He started winning prize after prize in the 1960s: the Governor of Tokyo's Prize (1962), the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art Prize (1964). In 1961 he had established himself as a printmaker by winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Tokyo International Biennale of Art, but it was in foreign parts that he achieved his greatest triumphs: in 1961 the Prix d'Excellence at the Young Artists' International Biennale in Paris; in 1965 the Grand Prix at the International Print-making Biennale in Ljubljana; in 1966, the First Prize at the International Engraving Biennale in Cracow, and first prizes at the Biennales of Vienna and Venice, where he was only the second Japanese to win in this category, after Munakata Shiko in 1956. He was the first Japanese to have a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1965). He was always on the move and spent two years in New York (1965-66), then settled for a year in Berlin (1967). Ikeda was producing prints in his studio in New York from 1969, he returned to Japan in 1980 and was based there from then on, and extended his brilliant talent beyond printmaking. In 1977, he won the 77th Akutagawa Prize (the most prestigious literary award in Japan) for his novel, Offering in the Aegean, and directed the film adaptation of the same title in 1979. This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "White Hamburgh Grape", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 60 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a cluster of pale green grapes still on the vine. The vine and leaves are shown in attractive shades of green and brown. The plant lays on a brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There is a light brown title rectangle in the lower center which is blank, suggesting this may be a more rare preproduction proof. There are wide white margins. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick light beige mat. The frame measures 26" high, 22" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a tiny spot in the lower margin on the left and another in the left margin. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. In Sonal's own words, 'This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work. Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger.
