Hand pencil signed by Le Corbusier lower right and numbered lower left. Limited edition: VI/XXX, (6/30). As issued, the first 10 examples of this particular rare Roman Numeral edition was accompanied by a second non-colored (black and white) version which is hand-numbered in an edition: VI/X, (6/10). Printed by Atelier Crommelynck and published by Editions A. C. Mazo & Cie both in Paris, France. The "Unité" portfolio was completed in Paris, October 15th, 1965. Sheet size: 22.25" x 17.75". Image size: 16.25" x 12.5". Provenance: private collection South Africa estate, acquired the complete suite from a gallery in Switzerland in the 1970's. It has never been framed, stored in its original issued box by Crommelynck since its inception. Excellent condition. Extremely rare, scarce two piece set. The complete tirage of the 1965 "Unité" portfolio consisted of 3 editions: 1. 130 arabic signed and numbered copies on Rives paper: 1/130 - 130/130 2. 30 roman numeral signed and numbered copies on Rives paper: I/XXX - XXX/XXX. The very first 10 of these 30 sets (I/XXX - X/XXX) were reserved for Le Corbusier and his collaborators and contained an additional non-colored etching numbered in roman numerals (I/X - X/X). Only 17 of these 20 additional non-colored accompanying etchings were completed before Le Corbusier died in 1965. The edition offered here 3. 65 copies reserved for the publisher: A. C. Mazo and Cie Le Corbusier was visionary writer, theorist, and architect, and a lesser-known painter. Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, he adopted his moniker when he began to author architectural designs and paintings. He had a fascination with proportion, modularity, and geometry, often taking his cue from classical architecture theory. His designs, however, were modernist and industrial. He fondly called houses “machines for living in,” and said that the base principal for design is that “it must be beautiful.” Le Corbusier was interested in solving what he called the problem of urban co-habitation, and produced a great number of designs for houses and apartment buildings. Le Corbusier worked at the atelier of Peter Behrens, the training grounds of other architectural masters like Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius.

    By André Masson
    Located in Saint Augustine, FL
An original signed etching with aquatint on Rives BFK paper by French artist André Masson (1896-1987) titled "Le Fil d'Ariane (Ariadne's Clew)", 1973. Hand pencil signed by Masson lower right and numbered lower left. Limited edition: 15/100. Comes from the 1974 "For Meyer Schapiro" portfolio of 12 print editions by various artists. Printed by Atelier Crommelynck, Paris, France and published by The Committee to Endow a Chair in Honor of Meyer Schapiro at Columbia University, New York, NY in 1974. Sheet size: 18" x 13.5". Image size: 11.5" x 8.5". In excellent condition. Rare. The "For Meyer Schapiro" portfolio consisted of four lithographs (one with embossing), three screenprints (one with stamp additions), two lithographs and screenprints (one with embossing), two etching and aquatints, and one duplicated drawing. Various printers were used. In addition to Masson, the following artists also contributed to the portfolio: Stanley William Hayter, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Liberman, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Saul Steinberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol. André Masson (b. Balagny-sur-Thérain 1896 - Paris 1987) was a French artist. He was brought up in Belgium. He began his study of art at the age of eleven in Brussels, at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Constant Montald, and later he studied in Paris. He fought for France during World War I and was seriously injured. His early works display an interest in cubism. He later became associated with surrealism, and he was one of the most enthusiastic employers of automatic drawing, making a number of automatic works in pen and ink. Masson experimented with altered states of consciousness with artists such as Antonin Artaud, Michel Leiris, Joan Miró, Georges Bataille, Jean Dubuffet, and Georges Malkine, who were neighbors of his studio in Paris. By the end of the 1920s, however, he was finding automatic drawing rather restricting, and he left the surrealist movement and turned instead to a more structured style, often producing works with a violent or erotic theme, and making a number of paintings in reaction to the Spanish Civil War. Under the German occupation of France during World War II, his work was condemned by the Nazis as degenerate. With the assistance of Varian Fry in Marseille, Masson escaped the Nazi regime on a ship to the French island...
