There is a metaphorical interplay between the natural imagery international artist, Jennyfer Stratman, uses and its multiple meanings. While the human figure features strongly, it is the essence of the body that is important to her, not the representation. Particularly, the artist imagines trees and branches as a figurative link between the natural environment and our physical presence. The implied internal landscape of the body can also be reflected in how our surroundings from birth affect our sense of identity. By exploring landscapes of the body and mind, she also hopes to comment on the larger picture of our impact on the natural world. This exquisite bronze and enamel sculpture is meant to be installed as a wall hanging that sits 2 inches away from the wall. In 1992 she commenced her studies at Arizona State University majoring in visual arts and art education. Stratman entered academia as a ceramicist. With each passing semester, the scale of her creations expanded and the material limitations of working with clay ultimately led her to the university foundry. This opened a door into another world of creative possibilities, profoundly changing her artistic direction. She replaced fired clay with larger-scale bronze, steel, and mixed media sculptures yet retained a delicacy, intimacy, and intricacy imbued from the ceramic process. Today she is a full-time established artist with studios operating in Phoenix, Arizona and Melbourne, Australia. Her time is divided between the two countries with each location informing and influencing the creative process. She has exhibited in 31 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her indoor and outdoor sculptures are held in public and private collections in countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel, England, and Europe. Marc Chagall Untitled (Roi David), 1954 is a rare and imaginative culmination of the collaboration between Marc Chagall and the Fucina degli Angeli. This work is from the beginning of Chagall’s usage of Murano glass as a means of expression. In 1954, Chagall was invited into the Fucina degli Angeli by Egidio Costantini who was the master glass blower at the time. This stunning and mesmeric sculpture beckons the eyes through the use of vivid, bold colors that blend seamlessly together. Blue, purple, teal and hints of red coalesce in the center of the glass plate, creating the backdrop for a whimsical scene placed in the foreground. A man in a crown kneels in the center of the work, preoccupied with the string instrument delicately constructed in his hands. Gilded flecks of gold are highlighted around the crown and instrument, showing us the depth of the lyrical poet. The transparent glass allows us to follow suite of the man, becoming entranced and lost in thought. Created in 1954 in the Fucina degli Angeli in Venice, Italy, this Murano glass sculpture was realized by master glass artist Egidio Costantini (Brindisi, 1912- Venice, 1998) in collaboration Marc Chagall, (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985). "Eastern Puma" is a wonderfully morbid sculpture created by the Canadian artist Yulia Shtern. This piece is part of her Mini Zoo Series depicting beautifully decaying remnants of species on our planet that are currently endangered. An unfortunate truth of our current society that is often forgotten. Shtern creates these beautiful pieces to draw the viewer in and force them to engage with reality head-on. From the artist "My new series of sculptures Magical Zoo observes this calamity through the prism of the wonder and playfulness of the natural world, through the miracle and majesty that is found in each and every animal, big and small, aquatic and land. The medium of the series consists of post mass consumption up-cycled material: paper products, packaging, non-recyclable plastics, fabric leftovers, other items that would have otherwise gone to a landfill. All the color on the finished sculptures comes from swatches of the up-cycled material itself. The only other substance added to the work is the transparent varnish glue. The pieces in the series are produced in an environmentally sustainable manner. Magical Zoo creates its own reality through the dualism of a colorful, whimsical representation of an animal whose habitat has been destroyed by industrial expansion or deforestation. Or an animal that was a hair away from going extinct, or an animal that could be next unless we do something today to stop this tragedy. The element of magic makes it easier to cope with the fact that our planet is dying...
