Realist Sculptures

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Continuum
Located in New York, NY
Ben Young’s sculpture fluidly blends glass, concrete, bronze, steel, and light to depict romantic and pensive imagery highlighting the fragility of our climate and its most precious resource – water. Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, Young is an avid surfer and environmentalist, inspired by a lifetime on and around oceans, bays, and reefs, with an intimate understanding of the challenges our precious ecosystems face. Young’s thought-provoking sculpture shows great range, portraying the beauty and solitude of life on the ocean, haunting depths of the deep sea, and stunning and relaxing upside of island life. Water is many things to many people, which Young encapsulates brilliantly in his work, encompassing themes of sustainability throughout. Using concrete to create mountains, crevasses, sand bars, and cliffs, Young’s innovative use of materials is transportative. With hand-carved glass as his guiding medium, Young amplifies light and its relationship with water – our most sacred element – to create a glowing unity that people from around the world connect with on a personal level, whether they are beachside or in the Desert. Portrait of Lady Lucy Henderson
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
John Edward Jones (Irish – 1806-1862) “Portrait of Lady Lucy Henderson” Signed and dated London 1858, and inscribed, “Lucy Henderson, Nee Durham” 28 ½” high x 20 ½” wide x 11” deep Provenance: Collection Saratoga Springs, NY About John Edward Jones was born in Dublin on May 2nd, 1806. He was the son of a miniature painter Edward Jones. He was trained as an engineer under Alexander Nimmo and worked with him on many important works in Ireland, including the building of the bridge at Waterford between 1829 in 1832, of which he was in charge. A taste and an aptitude for sculpture induced him to relinquish his prospects as an engineer and he commenced practice in London as a sculptor. He achieved considerable success, especially in portrait busts, and was employed by many notable persons of the time. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1844 and continue to do so until his death. He executed a considerable number of bust of Irish personages. He paid occasional visits to Dublin where he contributed to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1847, 1852,1853 and 1854. A full-length statue by him of Sir Robert...
