Abstract Art

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Joan Kahn Rome Vibrant Bold Color Abstract Expressionist Modernist Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Oil paint on heavy tar paper. Hand signed and dated verso. Joan Kahn (USA 1953-) grew up in New York City; Princeton, New Jersey; and Vermont; in an environment that patronized the arts. At home her father, a professor, and mother, a state economist and homemaker, collected nineteenth and twentieth century drawings and prints, Middle eastern rugs, and ceramics, pewter, and old tools. Her grandfather, Max Westfield, was an academically trained portrait painter and her great uncle was a well-known gallery owner and art dealer in pre-World War II Germany. One of the influential experiences of Joan’s youth was visiting her grandfather in his studio in Tennessee where the family had first immigrated. Growing up near New York, and spending a year in Paris during high school, provided formative visits to museums and galleries. Joan was academically talented in grade and high school, but after her father’s death during her first years at university she found herself concentrating on studio and history of art. It was a subject above others absorbed and concentrated her focus. Influential in Joan’s development and later work are the historic movements of the Bauhaus and Modernist design and architecture, geometric art and design of diverse cultures, Color Field Painting. Many artists have had a impact on her work, such as Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Sonia Delaunay, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Antoni Tapies, David Smith, John McLaughlin, Tony Smith, Louise Nevelson, Robert Mangold, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Valerie Jaudon, Jasper Johns, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, Vija Celmins, Caio Fonseca, Peter Halley, Ed Moses, Juan Usle, and Nancy Haynes...

Mid Century Cornish gouache abstract painting by William Black 'Doorway'
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
William Black (British, Fl. 1963 – 69) Doorway Ink and watercolour on paper Signed, inscribed and dated ‘Doorway William Black 64’ (lower edge) 7.1/2 x 4.7/8 in. (19.2 x 12.4 cm.) (to site edge) William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s. He was a self taught artist, producing numerous deconstructivist sculptures in the 1960s. He moved to St Ives in Cornwall where he knew artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. There is a clear architectural element to the sculptures that he made . They illustrate an assemblage of fragmented shapes and forms of a deconstructivist nature. William Black’s artwork is very much rooted in the time and Cornish School so one can see elements from those such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham...

Framed simply in a modern black wood frame. Measures 28"h x 24"w. Frame size: 29.5"h x 25.5"w x 1.25"d. Fredric Karoly was born in Budapest in 1897. According to Karoly's own vitae, his exhibition history began in New York in 1947, when at the age of 54 he took part in a four-person group show at Hugo Gallery. His involvement with visual art however was apparently lifelong. In a brief introduction to his solo show at Galerie Mai in Paris in June of 1949, Jen Luc de Rudder, reports that Karoly began painting at the age of 12 in Budapest. After several years of studying, then working in London, Paris and Berlin, Karoly emigrated to the United States in 1925 or 1926. In New York, Karoly worked in women's fashion as a designer. By the early 1950's, Karoly started experimenting with the drip...

1978 Joy Walker Pattern & Decoration Color Field Abstract Op Art Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Joy Walker (Canadian, b.1942) Pattern painting Acrylic on canvas, This is heavily textured acrylic with a sculptural quality to it Dimensions: approx. 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" Verso of each is signed and dated, Joy Walker / 1978 / Acrylic. Provenance: the Estate of Andre Zarre Sowulewski Joy Walker (1942– ) is a mixed media abstract painter born in Tacoma, Washington. Walker studied at the University of Oregon and Columbia University with art historian Meyer Shapiro. She also attended the New York Studio School with instructors Sidney Geist, Philip Guston, Alex Katz, and Esteban Vicente. Throughout Walker’s career, which began in 1970, she has exhibited at galleries in Canada and in the United States. Her work has subsequently been collected by Citibank and JPMorgan Chase banks. Joy Walker: 1970 - 1995: 25 Years, George Woodman New York, NY: 55 Mercer St. Gallery, 1995.Includes essays by George Woodman, Gary Michael Dault, Yvonne Lammerich, and Andre Zarre; Accompanied a 1995 exhibition. "One has the sense of peering through a sharp-edged hole in the wall at parts of some unknown visual expanse. In fact, implied continuation of a field is a constant in Walker's oeuvre, along with an emotive display of color held in check by powerfully graphic shapes, whether geometric or organic." Janet Koplos, Art in America, September 1995. Her work relates to the Pattern and Decoration art movement from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. The movement has sometimes been referred to as "P&D" or as The New Decorativeness. The movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. These artists also looked for inspiration outside of the United States. The influence of Islamic tile work from Spain and North Africa are visible in the geometric, floral patterns. They looked at Mexican, Roman, and Byzantine mosaics; Turkish embroidery, Japanese woodblocks; and Iranian and Indian carpets and miniatures. They often retained the same 'flattening grid' frequently employed by Minimalist painters. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Artists included Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Susan Michod, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, and Robert Zakanitch. Joy Walker has been exhibiting paintings for thirty years. She is the winner of grants from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, Artists Space, Change, Inc., the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council and the New York Studio School. She exhibited at MoMA NY PS1 in 1980 along with Jaime Ardila, Allen Bertoldi, Catharina Cosin, Peter Downsbrough, Barry Feuerstein, Jasper Halfmann, Jene Highstein, Frances Hynes, John Massey, Dennis Oppenheim, Maura Sheehan, Bernard Tschumi, Joel-Peter Witkin. She has attended the following art colonies: Yaddo, MacDowell, Edward Albee, Millay, Byrdcliffe, Pouch Cove, Baie-Saint-Paul, Sheffield Lake, Cummington and Palisades Park. This work also bears the influence of Op Art and Kinetic Art Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Julian Stanczak, Anni Albers and Richard Anuszkiewicz, She showed at Andre Zarre Gallery including a solo show. This came from his collection of painting and sculpture. Andre Zarre Gallery showed Sonia Delaunay, Nassos Daphnis, Sari Dienes...

Peter Halley at Sonnabend Gallery, New York (Hand Signed by Peter Halley)
Located in New York, NY
Peter Halley Peter Halley, Sonnabend Gallery, New York (Hand Signed by Peter Halley), 1989 Offset lithograph poster (hand signed by Peter Halley) 28 × 26 inches Unframed Alpha 137 Gallery is honored to offer this historic offset lithograph of American artist Peter Halley's 1989 exhibition at the legendary Sonnabend Gallery in New York which the artist hand signed in black marker. Scroll down for a photograph of our director Nadine Witkin with the artist. Below is Peter Halley's official biography. What it doesn't mention is that Andy Warhol famously painted his portrait in 1986! Peter Halley is that legendary. According to Halley, he didn't realize until after Warhol's death that the polaroids Warhol took of him with his famous "big shot" camera were made into an original painting. Warhol's painting of Peter Halley was included in the recent Andy Warhol retrospective "Andy Warhol - from A to B and Back Again" at the Whitney. PETER HALLEY BIOGRAPHY Peter Halley, born 1953, New York City, is an American artist who came to prominence as a central figure of the Neo-Conceptualist movement of the 1980s. His paintings redeploy the language of geometric abstraction to explore the organization of social space in the digital era. Since the 1980s, Halley’s lexicon has included three elements: “prisons” and “cells,” connected by “conduits,” which are used in his paintings to explore the technologically determined space and pathways that regulate daily life. Using fluorescent color and Roll-a-Tex, a commercial paint additive that provides readymade texture, Halley embraces materials that are anti-naturalistic and commercially manufactured. In the mid 1990s Halley pioneered the use of wall-sized digital prints in his site-specific installations. He has executed installations at Museo Nivola, Orani, Sardinia (2021); Greene Naftali...

WPA Woman Artist Modernist Abstract Print
By Riva Helfond
Located in Surfside, FL
Riva Helfond (1910–2002) was an American artist and printmaker best known for her social realist studies of working people's lives. Riva Helfond was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family. She spent some of her childhood in Russia and returned to New York at the age of eleven, living in New York or New Jersey for most of the rest of her life. Between 1928 and 1940, she studied at the School of Industrial Art and the Art Students League; her teachers included William von Schlegell, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Morris Kantor for painting and Harry Sternberg for printmaking. Among her fellow students were Alexander Brook and her future husband, the sculptor William (Bill) Barrett. Helfond began teaching in the College Art Association Program (1933–36) and then taught printmaking at the Harlem Arts Community Center (1936–38). Initially she taught lithography alongside Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, and others before moving to the graphic arts division, where she worked with Louis Lozowick and Jacob Kainen, and the silkscreen division, which was supervised by Anthony Velonis and which had Harry Gottlieb and Elizabeth Olds as founding members. Among her students at the Center was Robert Blackburn, who would go on to found New York's Printmaking Workshop in the 1940s. Later on, Helfond taught printmaking at New York University (1964), and she was on the faculty of Union College in Cranford, New Jersey, from 1980 onwards. From 1936 to 1941, Helfond was an artist in the New York Works Progress Administration program's graphics division, creating work in a variety of media, including lithographs, woodcuts, etchings, aquatints, collograph, and silkscreens. Some of her work shows the impact that color had as it entered American printmaking during this period, and she was adventurous in exploring the possibilities opened up by screen printing. She printed...
