Here for your consideration is a beautiful highly detailed bronze done in the forth quarter of the nineteen century after the work of Jean Boulogne, known as Giambologna. Boulogne’s sculpture was done in marble and was completed between 1579 and 1583. The sculptor of this bronze is Antonin Mercie, a well known French sculptor born in 1845. The bronze represents the Rape of the Sabine Women (Latin: Sabinae raptae), also known as the Abduction of the Sabine Women or the Kidnapping of the Sabine Women, was an incident in Roman mythology in which the men of Rome committed a mass abduction of young women from the other cities in the region. Artist: Paul Edouard Delabrierre (French, 1829-1912) Title: Vogel Year: Circa 1900 Medium: Cast bronze sculpture, with dark brown patina Edition: Unknown Size: 12.3 x 9 x 9.25 inches Signature: Signed on the deck Condition: Excellent About the artist: Paul-Édouard Delabrièrre (29 March 1829 – 1912) was a French animalier sculptor who worked in the mid-to-late 19th century and the early 20th century. He had 70 of his sculptures juried into the prestigious Salon art exhibition held annually in Paris. His monumental work called L'Equitation adorns the facade of the Louvre museum. Delabrièrre was an important member of the animalier school who exhibited at the Salon from 1848 through 1882. His first two exhibits were typical of the style of his work throughout his career. He submitted Greyhound Holding a Hare and Wounded Deer. Most of his oeuvre were comparatively small models, however his larger pieces often incorporated figures. His work varies in style and quality with some models directly influenced by Antoine-Louis Barye who was the father of the animalier school. Delabrièrre's more popular realist bronzes were of impeccable quality and place him in the top echelon of his school. The facade of the Louvre incorporates one of his largest groups, the monumental L 'Equitation, which depicts a horse and two putti, one of whom is aboard the horse. It was completed by Delabrièrre in 1857 and installed that same year. In the final two years of his exhibiting career Delabrièrre experimented with iron as a worthy material for the Salon, although that idea did not go over well with collectors who were accustomed to bronzes. The works that were done in cast iron were produced by the art foundry Durenne Val Osne under the direction of Pierre Louis Rouillard. A list of Delabrièrre's 70 works presented at the Salon can be found in the Dictionnaire des Sculpteurs by Stanislas Lami. Versatility was one of Delabrièrre's strengths. The range of animals he sculpted covers nearly every large mammal to be found in continental Europe. He also did a few lion and panther sculptures during his career, as well as some camel and bird pieces, but his favorite subjects seemed to be dogs and big cats. He exhibited his Javanese panther in plaster at the 1857 Salon as well as Tigre du Bengale at the 1865 Salon. His repertoire also included some pieces executed in the orientalist genre. Delabrièrre used both the sand casting method and the lost wax method to create his sculptures. As early as December 1869 his sculptures had begun to be imported to the United States by the Philadelphia jewelry...

However, it was Christoph Trew, a wealthy physician, lifelong supporter and friend, who published the work for which Ehret is best known, Plantae Selectae. Ehret went to Leiden to meet Carolus Linnaeus and they became the best of friends. It is the Linnaen classification of plants to which Ehret subscribed. In distinguishing of the sexual systems of plants and the cross-sectioning of specimens, based on the teachings of Linnaeus, Ehret's illustrations have become the standard followed by horticulturists throughout the centuries. Ehret is the only foreigner to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in England. The illustrations for Plantae Selectae were printed in black and white and painstaking colored by hand at the time of publication. The color is superb! All of the initial words of the titles were gilded; a glorious tribute to an achievement of excellence. Various scholars at the time of publication praised the book highly, singling out the excellent quality of Ehret's watercolor studies, as well as Haid's fidelity to them. To produce a study for an historic illumination of antiphonals, the Arundel Society selected each of the alphabet letters from chorale books created in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Devotional pieces, the chorale music was greatly appreciated by Christians throughout the world. Often it was sung as responsive music where the choir would be divided into two parts thus creating a harmony which reinforced the Christian religious doctrine. As illustrious as the music, the key letters that headed each piece would take their own place in the art world. Many initials would be specifically devoted to prominent men and woman of both religious and cultural importance. For example, the “F” was devoted to Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists...

John Gould was the most prolific ornithologist and recorder of birds in England during the 19th century. Born a gardener's son, he was raised on the royal estate at Windsor. He became a gardener at Ripley Castle, where he learned the art of taxidermy, a skill so useful in his future career. In 1827, N.A. Vigors required a taxidermist for the newly formed Zoological Society of London; the job came to Gould who moved to London and married Elizabeth Coxen. She was to become a skilled collaborator, both as draughtsman and as supervisor in the lithographic shop. It was Elizabeth who was responsible for transferring the drawings made by Gould, from the specimens sent to him from all over the world, onto lithographic stone. Unable to find a publisher, Gould resolved to publish his works himself. Illustrating over 3000 species of birds and animals and producing over forty folio volumes, Gould's works became great financial successes. He realized a considerable fortune. The most well known prints are from his outstanding monograph on hummingbirds. They are unequaled in the history of ornithology. The brilliant coloring is highlighted with gold and a transparent luster creating metallic hues, a technique which has never been successfully reproduced. The birds appear in charming groups of twos and threes surrounded by realistic foliage. Each bird is drawn to scale and is anatomically correct to the smallest detail.
