Expressionist Art

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Girl from Gombe: Expressionist Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

Girl from Gombe is an original painting by Abifola Olorunlana. Olorunlana created Girl from Gombe with Acrylic on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. The Girl from Gombe is a two-portrait series about a young girl from Gombe who is trying to find balance in her personal life in a society that does not really care much about the mental health of young people. In each portrait, her bodily pose, complemented with fresh-looking green plants and every other element in the painting tells a story about all the good and bad choices that have led her to where she is; the influence of her academics, family, religion, and the friends she surrounds herself with. While she's fighting her insecurities, and facing a dilemma in her career choice, she seems to persevere in living. Whenever I look at my subject and listen to her talk, all I see is a beautiful girl who has fallen prey to what we all refer to as life: Abifola Olorunlana decided to narrate with paint on canvas as a reminder that no matter what the situation is, as long as we are alive our lives can always get better. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Influence

Influence

By Aba Linus

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

The artwork titled "Influence" depicts a lady who appears to be lost in thought. She is portrayed with a blue and yellow color around her neck, which stands out against the grey background. The artwork is captivating, and it seems to tell a story of its own. The lady's posture suggests that she is deep in thought, perhaps reflecting on something significant. The blue and yellow colors around her neck add to the intrigue, leaving the viewer to wonder about their meaning. The colors are bold and bright, almost as if they are trying to break through the grey background. The title of the artwork, "Influence," adds another layer to the piece's meaning. It could be interpreted as the lady being influenced by something or someone, or perhaps she is the one who exerts influence on others. Either way, the title makes the artwork more thought-provoking and leaves the viewer with questions. The use of color in the artwork is striking. The blue and yellow around the lady's neck create a sense of vibrancy and life. The grey background, while muted, provides a subtle contrast that emphasizes the colors around her neck. The color choices are deliberate, each color has its own symbolic meaning. Blue is often associated with calmness, trust, and communication, while yellow is associated with optimism, happiness, and energy. The overall composition of the artwork is simple yet powerful. The lady is the focal point of the piece, and her posture and expression convey a sense of introspection. The blue and yellow colors around her neck draw the viewer's attention, and the grey background provides a sense of stillness and calmness. The artwork is open to interpretation, and the viewer may interpret it in different ways. Some may see it as a representation of someone deep in thought, while others may see it as a symbol of inner strength and influence. Whatever the interpretation, the artwork is visually striking and thought-provoking. In conclusion, "Influence" is a beautiful and thought-provoking artwork that portrays a lady lost in thought with blue and yellow colors around her neck on a grey background. The artwork's title and use of color add to its complexity, leaving the viewer with questions and interpretations. It is a testament to the power of art and its ability to evoke emotions and stimulate the mind. Young Girl with Baby Oil Painting 1970s Spanish Impressionist Portrait Emotional

By Amadeo Freixas Vivo

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Young Girl with Baby Oil Painting 1970s Spanish Impressionist Portrait Emotional Figurative Artwork Medium: Oil on board Period: 1970–1979 Date: circa 1975 Condition: Good condition consistent with age Dimensions: Height: 46 cm (18.12 in) Width: 38 cm (14.97 in) Frame: Unframed Origin: Spain A tender and emotionally engaging oil painting depicting a young girl holding a baby, executed in Spain circa 1975. Rather than a traditional maternal scene, the composition captures a more unusual and compelling dynamic: a child caring for another child. This subtle shift introduces a layer of emotional complexity, where innocence and responsibility coexist. The girl’s expressive gaze becomes the central anchor of the composition, conveying a quiet intensity that draws the viewer in. The artist employs loose yet confident brushwork, with an earthy palette enriched by soft pink tones that enhance the warmth of the scene. This type of subject—intimate, psychological, and slightly unconventional—offers collectors something beyond decorative appeal: a narrative moment suspended in time. Its small scale further increases its charm and versatility, making it ideal for refined interiors or curated gallery walls. A distinctive example of late 20th-century Spanish figurative impressionism, with strong emotional resonance. Amadeo Freixas Vivo (1912–2004) was a Spanish painter known for his figurative and impressionist works. Throughout his career, he developed a personal style focused on intimate scenes and expressive portraiture, often exploring themes of everyday life and human emotion. girl with baby painting, figurative oil painting, spanish painting 1970s, impressionist portrait, child portrait painting...

Adventure Story 1
Adventure Story 1

Adventure Story 1

By Olamilekan Bello

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

"Adventure Story" is a homage to the rich cultural traditions passed down through generations. The artwork's protagonist, a male hunter, stands as a representation of the deep-rooted connection between man and nature, as well as the preservation of traditional practices. The wooden local gun he carries symbolizes both the tools of his trade and the ancestral knowledge that has been handed down through time. Bello's artwork prompts us to appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that our traditions, rituals, and stories hold invaluable wisdom and provide a link to our past, helping us understand who we are as individuals and as a collective. The central theme of "Adventure Story" revolves around the spirit of adventure, encapsulated by the hunter in the artwork. The headlamp tied around his head signifies his readiness to explore the unknown and face the challenges that lie ahead. It speaks of the courage to navigate unfamiliar territories and the determination to embrace new experiences. The headlamp, traditionally used to illuminate darkness, can also be interpreted metaphorically as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment. It symbolizes the hunter's quest for wisdom and understanding, highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge as we venture into the uncharted territories of life. Olamilekan Bello...
