Nu sur la plage - Post Impressionist Oil, Nude in Landscape by Henri Lebasque
By Henri Lebasque
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed oil on canvas circa 1920 by French post impressionist painter Henri Lebasque. The work depicts a nude brunette woman lying on a beach, her arm draped over her head covering her face. A beautifully brushed piece. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 22"x27" Unframed: 13"x18" Provenance: With thanks to Denise Bazetoux for confirming the authenticity of this work This painting is included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Henri Lebasque - Volume I No. 1409 Maitre Blache, Versailles, 21st November 1967 Lot 117 Maitre Lombrail, Enghien-les-Bains, 23rd September 1984 Sotheby's, London, 1st July 1987 Lot 317 Miromesnil Fine Art, Paris - 1988 Henri Lebasque studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then, after moving to Paris in 1886, studied briefly under Bonnat, then under Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Panthéon. More importantly, he met and learned from Pissarro. In 1893 he met Luce and Signac at the Salon des Indépendants, and as a result he adopted Pointillism for a few years. In the 1900s he lived in Lagny with his family and painted landscapes of the neighbouring Marne forest. His painting underwent drastic changes when he discovered the south of the country. He would thereafter live in other French regions: Vendée, Brittany and Normandy, where he stayed at Les Andelys for some time, but his home from home was between Sanary and Nice. He painted members of his family in the settings in which he lived, mostly in Provence. His work shares some themes of his friend Bonnard. But although he exhibited with the Fauves, and admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy, Valtat and Manguin (who introduced him to the Midi), he remained distinct from them in style. Lebasque was well known in his lifetime. He collaborated on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and of the Atlantic liner Paris. He is remembered for: Nymphs at their Bath; The Sunshade; Girl with Hydrangeas; Great Nude on a Pink Sofa. He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Masters of Independent Art ( Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant) at the Petit Palais. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence.

Adrian Heath, British, mid 20th Century abstract in golds and browns
By Adrian Heath, 1920-1992
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Adrian Heath (British, 1920 - 1992) Golden Brown Mixed media signed ‘Heath 88’ (lower right) 73 x 54 cm. Adrian Heath (1920–1992) was a 20th-century British painter. Heath was born in Burma and attended Bryanston School in Dorset, southern England. In 1938, he studied art under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn. In 1939 and 1945–47, he attended the Slade School of Art. He served in the RAF as a tail gunner in Lancaster bombers in World War II, but spent almost the entire war as a prisoner of war at Stalag 383. During this period he became friends with and taught fellow POW Terry Frost to paint. In 1949 and 1951, he visited St Ives, Cornwall, where he met Ben Nicholson. In the early 1950s, he was also associated with Victor Pasmore and Anthony Hill. As such he became the main link between the emerging St Ives School and British Constructivism. He was also influenced by D'Arcy Thompson. In 1953 Heath published 'Abstract Painting: its Origins and Meaning' a slim but perceptive volume appraising the development of abstraction by the early moderns. He exhibited at the Musée Carcassonne in 1948, and at the Redfern Gallery...

Aboriginal Painting by Michael Nelson Tjakamarra
By Michael Nelson Tjakamarra
Located in Miami, FL
Michael Nelson Tjakamarra (also cited as: Michael Nelson Jagamarra, or Jakamara) is a Senior Warlpiri Tribesman and an Elder of the Papunya Community in central Australia. Born c. 1949 at Pikilyi, Vaughan Springs west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory, he grew up ‘in the bush’. His father was an important tribal elder and medicine man at Yuendumu. It was therefore automatic that he would grow up with the traditional values and knowledge that now influences his paintings. Michael lived at Haasts Bluff until his parents took him to Yuendumu for European education at the mission school. He left school at thirteen, after initiation, and worked at buffalo shooting, driving trucks, droving cattle and in the army, before returning to Yuendumu and then to Papunya to settle in 1976. He worked for a time in the Government store and for the Council. Michael learned to paint at Papunya by observing the senior men such as Billy Stockman and Old Mick Tjakamarra. Although he was tutored by his uncle, Jack Tjupurrula, Michael developed his own style and began painting earnestly from 1983. Michael is known as master desert painter for his depiction of several Dreamings in one painting. For him the understanding of the Dreaming stories that go with his paintings is all important – without the stories his paintings would ‘mean nothing’ as far as he is concerned. His Dreamings include the Possum, Snake, Two Kangaroos, Rock Wallaby, Bush Banana, Honey Ant and Yam. In 1984 Michael won the National Aboriginal Art Award with his painting ‘Three Dreamings’. His reputation as a painter rose rapidly after this. He exhibited his work in the 1986 Biennale of Sydney and featured in ‘The State of the Art’, a British art documentary. In 1987 Michael had been asked to paint a major work (27’long) to decorate the foyer of Sydney’s Opera House and he chose to paint his ‘Possum Dreaming’ story. A great highlight in Michael’s career was in 1988 when he was commissioned to design a 196 sq-metre mosaic in the main forecourt of Australia’s new Parliament House in Canberra. The work was based on his ‘Kangaroo and Emu’ dreaming. Michael was presented to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11...

Still Life with Flowers - original flora still life oil painting abstract Modern
By Sylvia Paul
Located in London, Chelsea
This contemporary artwork by Sylvia Paul presents a still life study painted in an impressionistic style. The composition is rendered with a bright and colourful palette which gives the image a joyful ambience. The artist conveys the subject matter in thick, impasto paint work which gives the piece an interesting textural appearance as well as a blissful energy. Delicately painted florwers indicate the artists relatable appreciation for natural subject matter. This piece is painted in oils on board, hand signed by the artist and ready to be displayed. Sylvia Paul studied painting at Colchester School of Art and Hockerill College of Education. She exhibits widely across the UK including galleries in London, Surrey, Neath, Wales and Bristol. Residing in East Anglia for most of her life she has been a regular exhibitor for nearly forty years in the region. One of her Japanese abstracts was hung in The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2009. She has held three solo exhibitions in Japan and in 2013 at her exhibition at Gallery Sakura, Nagoaka, 36 paintings were sold in three days. Other successes include being accepted for open exhibitions with The Pastel Society. The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Laing Landscape Exhibition and The Royal Institute of Water Colour Artists where two of her landscape collages were exhibited. Two of Sylvia’s paintings are in the Norwich Union Art Collection and her work is in many private collections in the UK and abroad. Sylvia continues to demonstrate to art clubs and is has inspired many people with her painting workshops. Since 2013 Sylvia has also been creating textile art and was elected as a member of Art Textiles: Made in Britain in 2016. She exhibits with them every other year at The Festival of Quilts at the NEC and then on tour throughout the UK. Le triomphe de la mort, 2000, oil on canvas by Jean Jansem
By Jean Jansem
Located in Carouge GE, GE

London Binion's - Kate Brinkworth, photorealist, dice, casino, painting, money
By Kate Brinkworth
Located in London, GB
Kate Brinkworth (b.1977) London Binion's 2017 oil on canvas 100 x 150 cm Price: £10,200 GBP (inc. 20% UK VAT) Provenance: Direct from the artist’s studio Notes: Kate Brinkworth undertook her artistic training at Nottingham Trent University, and graduated in 2000 with first class honours. She rapidly began exhibiting her work, and her first major solo show took place in 2001 at Britart Gallery, London. Her success led to further exhibitions across the country and abroad, and she began featuring regularly in several international art fairs and won numerous awards. These include the Westgate Prize (2004), and a commission from GUS headquarters in Mayfair. Kate Brinkworth's painting stems from her curiosity in films, particularly those directed by or in the style of Hitchcock. She is particularly inspired by effects created though experimentation with focus, and repeatedly photographs her still lifes with various shutter speeds, camera angles and lighting to find the optimum composition. Brinkworth's style uses the language of film, advertising and photography to create these unique images; her visits to Las Vegas have developed her interest in the representation of objects associated with vice. Painted in varying degrees of focus, her expert technique deceives the viewer into believing the work is a photograph, due to the realism of her subject matter and style, and the thin application of paint which gives a smooth, glossy finish. It is only on closer inspection that the viewer realises the work is entirely painted by hand. Brinkworth's works challenge our perceptions of the image; in our contemporary world inundated with visual stimuli, she painstakingly labours over her compositions to make us look at these familiar objects in a new way. In a parallel challenge to contemporary conventions her technique mirrors the Renaissance mural technique of the 'cartoon', a drawing which would be pricked along the lines and dusted with charcoal to transfer the skeleton of the image to the wall. Brinkworth similarly maps out her photographs onto both sides of sheets of paper and rubs the reverse to move the image onto the canvas. Once the composition is mapped out, she begins working into the picture in oil using her distinctive technique. Categories: London Binion's, Kate Brinkworth, photorealist, dice, gambling, casino...
