Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...

Contemplating Cultural Restoration, Fillipus Sheehama, charcoal & acrylic paint
By Fillipus Sheehama
Located in Windhoek, NA
Contemplating Cultural Restoration, 2021. Mixed media: charcoal and acrylic paint on Fabriano Fillipus Sheehama's latest large-scale sculptural textiles have grown out of an exploration of recycled materials and their link to overconsumption. The materials are sourced from under-maintained and largely impoverished areas of Namibia. His artistic process has evolved to incorporate organic waste materials. Indigenous makalani fruits are often used as a food source and to brew alcohol. In these works the discarded makalani piths are cut in half and hand-stitched together alongside flattened metal bottle caps and shards of animal bone. The use of these discarded materials also points to the agricultural processes that sustain subsistence farmers. Sheehama highlights issues of land (re)distribution as years of Apartheid and colonialism carved up and cut off access to much of the arable land in Namibia, leaving the majority of the population scrambling for resources. The patchwork of different materials and textures speaks to the segregation of land and people, and the need to use our natural resources and knowledge to unify for a more just and fair society. Each artwork is both a reflection of society as well as a critique of contemporary living. He is preoccupied with ideas of wholeness, thinking about the relationship between individual and collective identity. The materials he chooses to use en masse- discarded bottle tops, plastics, old school desks...

Provence landscape , 1946 - oil paint, 46x61 cm.
By Maurice Mendjinzky
Located in Nice, FR
Oil painting on hardboard depicting a Provence landscape with olive trees and hills. Signed on left side low. Maurice Mendjizky, was born on July 20th 1890 a Lodz in Polonie and died on may 8th in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (Alpes-Maritimes, France). A museum is tributed to him, the Mendjisky - Ecole de Paris museum, in Paris.

"Midnight Roses". Contemporary Floral Painting
By Carolyn Miller
Located in Brecon, Powys
'Midnight Roses' Acrylic and plaster paste on canvas 71x91 cm First the canvas is primed with gesso, and several layers of the base coat are applied. When I am satisfied that there is enough depth to the colour, I start to sculpt the actual roses onto the painted canvas using a flexible plaster paste. The sculpted roses are then primed individually with gesso and painted with high-quality, heavy-body acrylic paint. The resulting relief has a highly 3-dimensional feel.
