Los Angeles Modernism Show 2015
From April 24 through 26, Los Angeles’s Culver City plays host to a vast collection of iconic 20th-century furniture, art, jewelry and decorative objects offered at yet another edition of the Los Angeles Modernism Show. With dozens of dealers exhibiting at the much-anticipated annual event — attended in past years by such celebrities as Courtney Cox, Julie Bowen and Ted Danson and design aficionados like Kelly Wearstler and Cliff Fong — this year’s iteration presents no shortage of chic vintage finds.
Missing the fair? Not to worry: Our editors’ selection from exhibiting 1stdibs galleries serves as both inspiration for the home and a visual encyclopedia of Modernism’s international mark. Included below: Early modern classics from the Art Deco period as well as selections from Georg Jensen’s prolific career in silverwork; Mid-century American and Scandinavian staples by the likes of McCobb, Henningsen, Parzinger, Platner, Noguchi and Baughman; and Brutalist signatures in brass and welded metal; plus outdoor decor, decorative glass and fine jewelry. Rare Luxurious 24 Piece Baccarat Colbert Stemware Service for Eight

Colbert is one of Baccarat's most luxurious and important patterns, pairing well with the Tzar and Lagny patterns and created for the most discerning clientelle. The body of each goblet is hand cut with a elegant, complex series of spires reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. Each glass is of substantial weight required for such superb decoration, subtly flared at the six sided stem with a well balanced facet cut knob at the base and round foot with a sunburst cut base. A pleasure to enjoy with fine wine and champagne.
The Colbert service was created circa 1908 and has been out of production for many years. This pattern was apparently popular with Baccarat's Imperial Russian clientelle at the beginning of the 1900's. In 1912, a freighter bound for Saint Petersburg carrying a large order of Baccarat pieces ran aground off the coast of Antwerp. In 1999, the ship was discovered with a number of pieces in the Colbert pattern, surely meant for the well documented sumptuous feasts of the Russian nobility...

Due to the manual process, there are subtle variations from piece to piece on their surfaces. In the foundry, each time molten metal is poured into the mold, a new piece materializes with ever so slight differences between one another, carrying its own “scars”.

Antique turn of the century 13 piece sugar bowl and hanging spoon set, featuring a trophy urn style bowl with etched palm leaves on the body, brackets to support twelve sugar spoons, squirrels in the pierced handles and a sparrow shaped finial. Set includes 11 Gorham sterling silver demitasse spoons in the New Queens pattern (introduced 1895); sold by J.E. Caldwell & Co. Bowl and lid by William Rogers (cross and keystone mark, circa 1900-1910), design number 57.
"Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The firm's chief product was spoons of coin silver, but also made thimbles, combs, jewelry, and other small items. In 1865, the Rhode Island legislature granted a charter in the name of Gorham Manufacturing Company. During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850–1940, Gorham was highly influential. The company has produced matching hollowware in both sterling and silverplate, as well as running a foundry for bronze sculpture. The White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations including those of Lincoln, Grant, and George W. Bush. Gorham artisans also sculpted several famous statues housed in the Capitol's Rotunda, overlooking the Museum of Natural History in New York, and topping the Rhode Island State House. Gorham has also designed a number of elaborate trophies for sporting events, including the Borg-Warner Trophy for the Indianapolis 500, designed by Robert J. Hill. The company has changed hands multiple times beginning with Textron (1967), to Dansk International Designs (1989), to Brown-Forman Corporation (1991), to the Lenox Group (2005), to Clarion Capital Partners (2009), now operating under the name Lenox Corporation."
"William Hazen Rogers (born May 13, 1801) was an American master silversmith and a pioneer in the silver-plate industry and whose work and name have survived to the present day. Rogers partnered with other silversmiths at times, and his company and trademarks were eventually taken over by larger companies. Rogers was born on a farm on May 13, 1801, to Sarah Reynolds (1777-?) and Asa Rogers (1798-1824). After he left home, he went on to become a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler. From 1820 to 1825, Rogers was an apprentice to Joseph Church, a silversmith and watchmaker in Hartford. In 1825, Rogers became partners with Church and their company, Church & Rogers, initially manufactured silver-plate flatware and hollowware. "In 1907, Louis ("Lew") E. Smith and his associates founded the L.E. Smith Glass Co., at Jeannette, PA, where they leased the decorating plant of the McKee-Jeannette Glass Co. In 1909, the L.E. Smith Glass Co., of Jeannette, PA, purchased the Mt. Pleasant, PA plant of the Anchor Glass Co. (in a bankruptcy sale), which then re-opened under Smith in January 1910. In the early years production focused on making various lines of practical glassware for home and kitchen use.
