Bvlgari
Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (eventually spelled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, BVLGARI has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.
Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, BVLGARI’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932. The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 1940s, BVLGARI debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the BVLGARI brand.
On 1stDibs, the collection of vintage BVLGARI jewelry includes rings, pendant necklaces, watches and other accessories.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for to determine whether your Bvlgari jewelry is real or fake. Authentic Bvlgari uses a capital Latin alphabet, which means that the U is replaced with a V and it is marked as BVLGARI. You can also see the Bvlgari hallmark, the brand’s name, the type of metal and a “Made in Italy” stamp on its jewelry. Shop a collection of authentic BVLGARI jewelry from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are two excellent ways to spot a fake BVLGARI bracelet. All BVLGARI jewelry has a hallmark with the brand’s name and ‘Made in Italy’. Also, BVLGARI uses the Latin alphabet, which replaces the ‘u’ with a ‘v’, a common thing overlooked on fakes. Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris set up his shop in Rome, Italy, in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (eventually spelled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). You can shop expertly vetted BVLGARI designs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- Is Bvlgari a luxury watch brand?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, BVLGARI is a luxury brand. The term describes a company that produces finely crafted products and sells them at aspirational price points. Bulgari watches, jewelry and accessories fit this definition. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Bulgari watches and other products.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022To tell a fake Bulgari Serpenti watch, start by looking at the brand name on the dial. The correct spelling of Bulgari on a timepiece is "Bvlgari." If you see a "U" instead of a "V," the watch is unlikely to be real. Also, closely examine the hour markers and hands. On fake watches, these elements may not be completely aligned or uniform in shape. Shop a selection of expertly vetted Bulgari Serpenti watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Key features to look for in a genuine Bvlgari B.Zero1 ring include the materials and stamped lettering on the ring. All genuine B.Zero1 rings from Bvlgari are made of 18K white, yellow, or rose gold. White gold can become less brilliant over time, but fakes made of cheaper silver will show obvious discoloration. The logo and lettering of BVLGARI should be clearly and evenly stamped twice around its band. Bvlgari rings have inspired fakes over the years, so it’s important to purchase from a certified seller. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted Bvlgari B.Zero1 rings from some of the world’s top sellers.
