Le Corbusier Decorative Art

French, Swiss, 1887-1965

Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier, was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades. His designs for sofas, chairs and other furniture are spare, minimal and efficient but at the same time offer supreme comfort.

A pioneer of progress-minded modern architecture, Le Corbusier sought to impose a rational order on the chaos of the world through design. He rejected the excessive architectural ornament and developed a style that became known as brutalism, creating buildings with elemental geometric forms that were made of industrial materials such as steel and reinforced concrete.

Le Corbusier believed that pure, well-designed spaces could offer a lesson in how little is needed to achieve happiness. To convey this notion, the architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underlining the beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity.

Le Corbusier’s furniture espouses these same ideals. Collaborating with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and trailblazing designer Charlotte Perriand, he devised such iconic pieces as the LC2 Petit Confort armchair and the LC4 chaise longue. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design. In his furniture, Le Corbusier broke new ground in ergonomics.

The shape of the LC4 chaise is taken directly from the human form; the classic cowhide upholstery makes the sitter feel weightless; and the piece features an adjustable positioning mechanism to promote total relaxation. Bereft of ornament and prized for its functionality, the LC series created by Le Corbusier, Perriand, and Pierre is currently manufactured by Cassina

Such planning and intelligence were the hallmarks of Le Corbusier’s career. Whether in his designs for private residences such as the Villa Savoye near Paris, apartment towers like the Unité D'habitation in Marseilles, or in his furniture, he worked toward a style of living that was expansive and flexible. The strength and simplicity of line of Le Corbusier’s sofas, chaise longues and other seating pieces give them a sculptural presence in any décor, yet they are sublimely restful. And as you will see on 1stDibs, Le Corbusier’s furniture reflects a worldly taste: it is at once refined, cosmopolitan and chic.

Le Corbusier Lithograph On paper, Totem
By Le Corbusier
Located in Toronto, ON
This exceptional vintage lithograph is signed in the plate Le Corbusier 1963. It is beautifully mounted in a gold gilt frame and was originally purchased in a prominent Toronto gallery in 1960’s. “Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, visionary architect and designer Le Corbusier developed new models for post-industrial urban living. He based his design philosophy on systems of proportion, modularity, and geometry; these principles infiltrated his writing, theory, and painting, as well as urban planning. Though Le Corbusier took inspiration from historical architects such as Vitruvius, Leonardo da Vinci, and Leon Battista Alberti—polymaths who similarly explored the relationship between the body and the built environment—his designs were decidedly modern and unembellished. His buildings have been erected in France, India, Japan, and beyond. As a painter, Le Corbusier co-founded the early 20th-century Purist movement, which dictated that objects should be depicted in their most pared-back forms. He later embraced a more abstract sensibility centered on lines, shadows, and curvilinear shapes. At auction, Le Corbusier’s work has sold for millions...

Exceptionnel stairs "Cité radieuse" by Charles Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier.
By Le Corbusier
Located in Nice, Cote d' Azur
Exceptional staircase called Cité radieuse by Charles Edouard Jeanneret called Le Corbusier (1887-1965) Uprights in larch, eleven steps in exotic wood. Ramps in black lacquered metal manufactured by the Jean Prouvé workshops. Restoration of use and maintenance on the ramps. Dimensions: H: 2.30; L: 69cm Provenance: Housing unit, Briey en Forêt. The staircase, identical in each duplex, is the result of close collaboration between Jean PROUVE and LE CORBUSIER. Its beginnings date back to 1922. Le Corbusier wanted to create "vertical garden cities", capable of simultaneously responding to the aspiration of the individual house (in contact with nature) and the advantages of the collective building (access to modern equipment ). This idea, perfected during the 1930s, resulted in a project for a large building in 1939, with "inner streets", "duplex" apartments, equipped roof terrace and integrated shops. The Briey Housing Unit, also called the Radiant City of Briey-en-Forêt, is a housing unit built between 1959 and 1960 in Meurthe-et-Moselle by the Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier according to the model that he established for Marseille. The housing unit project is part of a larger project for a new residential area in the heart of the forest, in this town in the Lorraine mining basin. It is Georges-Henri Pingusson who is the chief architect of this neighborhood project and who is also building two sets of 100 housing units and a school near the unit. The objective is to accommodate the population then in full increase in connection with the expansion of the iron mines and the steel industry. In 1955, Le Corbusier entered into official contact with the town hall of Briey, he was appointed chief architect of the project and André Wogenscky...

"Femme a La Main Levee" Lithograph by Le Corbusier, France, 1954
By Le Corbusier, Mourlot
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A beautiful, rare lithograph by Le Corbusier, printed by Mourlot in Paris, France 1954. This artpiece is named Femme a la Main Levee meaning Woman with the raised hand Informally, this is also used for something being a first draft, possibly saying something about the nature of this piece. It's a very appealing artwork with playful use of different shapes and brown, black and grey tones creating a beautiful harmony at the same time. It is signed LC 54 in the plate. In very good original condition. Charles-E´douard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now called modern architecture. He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades. Corbusier said: "Chairs are architecture, sofas are bourgeois". Le Corbusier began experimenting with furniture design in 1928 after inviting the architect, Charlotte Perriand, to join his studio. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, also collaborated on many of the designs. Before the arrival of Perriand, Le Corbusier relied on ready-made furniture to furnish his projects, such as the simple pieces manufactured by Thonet, the company that manufactured his designs in the 1930s. In 1928, Le Corbusier and Perriand began to put the expectations for furniture Le Corbusier outlined in his 1925 book L'Art De´coratif d'aujourd'hui into practice. In the book he defined three different furniture types: type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects. He defined human-limb objects as: "Extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions that are type-needs and type-functions, therefore type-objects and type-furniture. The human-limb object is a docile servant. A good servant is discreet and self-effacing in order to leave his master free. Certainly, works of art are tools, beautiful tools. And long live the good taste manifested by choice, subtlety, proportion, and harmony". The first results of the collaboration were three chrome-plated tubular steel chairs designed for two of his projects, The Maison la Roche in Paris and a pavilion for Barbara and Henry Church...

Le Corbusier's theory is known as the five points of architecture. Developed in the 1920s, these principles had a major influence on the approach to modern architecture and include pilotis (elevating a building on pylons), the free design of a façade, the free design of a ground plan, a horizontal window and a roof garden. The architect prioritized modern, open interiors and emphasized light, rational designs. His architecture and interiors share a clear sense of space and structural order, underscoring beauty in harmony, proportion and simplicity. The main difference between Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier is the architects’ philosophy. Frank Lloyd Wright helped pioneer organic architecture—buildings that coexist harmoniously with their natural surroundings. As a result, he often preferred to use natural and even local materials in his buildings and furniture. Le Corbusier was more progress-minded and sought to impose rational order on the world's chaos through design. He focused on designs for living in modern urban settings. In his furniture, he tended to blend natural and human-made materials, such as tubular chrome and genuine leather. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier furniture.
