Pablo Picasso Art

Spanish, 1881-1973

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Considered to be one of Picasso’s monumental linoleum prints, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959 is a large-scale artwork that captures the essence of this artist’s innovation and minimalist creativity. His simple lines curve and undulated together to form the characters of the piece: the woman – feminine and robust, the horse – whimsical and characteristic, and the picador – strong and masculine. All three subjects create a triad composition making way for a harmonious and balanced piece. The entire work exudes an air of femininity and mystery, all set against a backdrop of a misty grey helping to create Picasso’s sensual environment of intrigue. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse) is a color linocut on Arches paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 21/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: Pablo Picasso Picador, Woman, and Horse (Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme), 1959 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work): 1. Pablo Picasso, Woman with Horse, Daytime, Cutouts and Photographs, 1962
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph and stencil by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled La femme au cheval (Woman with Horse), originates from the 1962 folio Pablo Picasso, André Villers, Diurnes, Découpages et Photographies (Daytime, Cutouts and Photographs). Published by Galerie Berggruen, Paris, and printed by ateliers de Daniel Jacomet, Paris, this collaborative work brings together Picasso’s poetic visual sensibility and Villers’ inventive photographic approach. The series represents a unique dialogue between cut paper forms and light, demonstrating Picasso’s continual exploration of composition, texture, and abstraction through new media. Executed on vélin d’Arches paper, this lithograph measures Paper Size 15.75 x 11.75 inches. As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized publication format. The edition preserves the subtle interplay of tone and structure that defines Picasso’s mastery of visual rhythm and lyrical modernism. Artwork Details: Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: La femme au cheval (Woman with Horse), from Pablo Picasso, André Villers, Diurnes, Découpages et Photographies (Daytime, Cutouts and Photographs), 1962 Medium: Lithograph and stencil (pochoir) on vélin d’Arches paper Dimensions: Paper Size 15.75 x 11.75 inches Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Galerie Berggruen, Paris Printer: Ateliers de Daniel Jacomet, Paris Catalogue Raisonné Reference: Goeppert, Sebastian, et al. Pablo Picasso: Catalogue Raisonné Des Livres Illustrés. Patrick Cramer, 1983, Illustration 115. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1962 folio Pablo Picasso, André Villers, Diurnes, Découpages et Photographies (Daytime, Cutouts and Photographs), published by Galerie Berggruen, Paris Notes: Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), Finished printing on January 29, 1962, on the presses of l'Imprimerie Union in Paris and in ateliers de Daniel Jacomet for phototypies and pochoirs. This album, made with the help of Lionel Prejger, was issued in M numbered examples, the first C of which were accompanied by an original engraving by Pablo Picasso numbered and signed by the artist. This engraving, printed on the presses of Arnéra in Vallauris, was presented in a special box. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. There, his pioneering spirit gave rise to groundbreaking movements, most notably Cubism, developed alongside Georges Braque, which revolutionized visual representation by deconstructing form and perspective. Over his prolific seven-decade career, Picasso’s work evolved through distinct stylistic periods—the Blue, Rose, African, and Classical phases—culminating in a body of art that embraced experimentation, emotional depth, and innovation. His influence and dialogue with fellow visionaries Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray shaped the foundation of modernism, while his legacy continues to resonate through the work of post-war and contemporary artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Together, these artists collectively expanded the boundaries of art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musee Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955). Pablo Picasso A.R. 496 Face Number 203 1963 10” round Edition of 150 White earthenware clay, decoration in engobe and enamel under partial brushed glaze, grey patina Ramie 496 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market. The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive. This particular piece is pristine: there are no nicks, bruises or scratches of any kind. Be careful when buying from others – the pieces sometimes have nicks or scratches. The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece. We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews. We are located in the USA. When you buy from a foreign seller on 1stdibs, you have to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item. When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when you “win” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay the packing and shipping fees, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. When you purchase from an auction house, the sale is final. If you receive the piece and are not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing you can do about it. You are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer can determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! The prices of Picasso Madoura Ceramics have been on fire lately (no pun intended). The major auction houses – Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips – have now been regularly holding Picasso Madoura Ceramic auctions...

Danseurs et Joueur de Diaule (Dancers and Diaulos Player), A.R. 341 can be compared to several other white earthenware pieces created by Picasso in 1956. Each depicts the carefree imagery of dancers, musicians, and fauns to which the artist returns time and again. Framed under a sloping mountain, two figures dance with arms raised above their heads, hands clasped in a spontaneous gesture. Leafy trees and flowers mark...

Paseo, from Service Scènes de Corrida, A.R. 416
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 is numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Paseo...

Questions About Pablo Picasso Art

To know if your Picasso is real, search trusted online resources for images of the artist's signature from authentic pieces produced around the same time that you believe your painting, drawing, sculpture, print or other piece was produced. Picasso's signature changed over time, and counterfeiters often fail to match the false signature on their reproductions to the correct signature style for a particular piece's time frame. Because it can be challenging to authenticate art without training and experience, consider having a certified appraiser or experienced dealer assist you. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of Pablo Picasso art.

Picasso's four art periods are called the Blue period, the Rose period, the African-influenced period and the Cubist period. The Blue period coincided with the turn of the 20th century and included works like The Old Guitarist and The Blue Room. As its name suggests, this period was marked by Picasso's use of shades of blues and greens, which instilled in his paintings a sense of melancholy. Around 1905, Picasso entered his Rose period, adopting a brighter palette of oranges and pinks. Significant works from this time include Autoportrait à la palette and Garçon à la pipe. Many experts point to the 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon as the start of Picasso's African-influenced period, during which Picasso employed a style inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces broken into geometric shards of surface planes. By the 1910s, this style had evolved into Cubism, with Picasso fragmenting his subjects into shapes. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Pablo Picasso art.

Picasso's drawing style isn't called by any single name. He created more than 30,000 drawings throughout his life and experimented with different styles. As a result, you might call one of his drawings Neoclassical and another Expressionist, Surrealist or Cubist. Overall, you can refer to his drawings and other artwork as modern art due to the period of time when it was produced. Find a range of Pablo Picasso drawings and other art on 1stDibs.

No, Pablo Picasso was not truly an abstract artist, in the opinion of experts. While he did help to shift art away from naturalistic forms toward abstraction with his Cubist pieces, most of his works weren't purely abstract. A good example of this is his well-known Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. In this painting, the female figures are abstracted, but you can still tell that the forms represent the human body. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Pablo Picasso art.

To tell if your Picasso painting is real, experts recommend taking it to a knowledgeable appraiser or art dealer. Unlike prints, which can be purchased on the secondary market, authentic Picasso paintings are rarely found outside the collections of museums and well-established private collectors. However, there are many convincing fakes in existence. Someone with training and experience will be best able to verify the artist's signature, the brushwork of the painting, the canvas, the frame and other features to determine its authenticity. How much a Pablo Picasso drawing is worth depends on its size, complexity, historical significance, condition and other factors. One of his drawings, Étreinte, done in white wax crayon and pencil on red paper, sold for $4.9 million, while a simpler pen and ink wash on paper called Baigneuse et cabine de bains fetched a selling price of more than $623,000. If you own a Picasso drawing, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer can evaluate the piece and provide you with its estimated fair market value. Picasso lived in more than one place in France. In 1904, he moved to Paris and settled in the artist quarter of Montmartre. In 1936, he set up his studio at 7 rue des Grands-Augustins in Paris. During World War II, he briefly fled to the south of France but then returned to his Parisian studio in 1940 and remained there until 1955, when he relocated to a villa near Cannes called La Californie. After a brief stay in the French village of Vauvenargues, he finally moved to Mougins, where he lived until he passed away in 1973. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Pablo Picasso art.

Picasso's most famous piece is arguably Guernica, which he created in 1937. A black-and-white oil painting, it captures the horrors of war with its depiction of the German bombing of Guernica, Spain. Another of his well-known works is Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. When it was produced in 1907, the painting was considered immoral and shocking for how it showed nude women whose faces resembled Iberian tribal masks. Other notable works by Picasso include The Old Guitarist, Le Rêve, The Weeping Woman and Girl Before a Mirror. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Pablo Picasso art.

Pablo Picasso's style of artwork is called Cubism. This style of art was invented around 1907-08 by Pablo Picasso and Georges. Cubism is known for bringing multiple views of a subject together, resulting in fragmented and abstract painting.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Pablo Picasso is most famous for founding the Cubist movement, which uses several points of view and perspectives, creating a geometric-looking result. Cubism was considered a massive break from traditional methods of painting. One of Picasso's most famous cubist pieces is “Guernica,” the artist's representation of the Spanish Civil War.

Yes, some Picasso drawings are valuable. In terms of auction sales, Picasso is the top-grossing artist of all time. However, his paintings often sell for considerably more than his drawings, largely due to the fact that the prolific artist produced tens of thousands of sketches during his life. Generally, the subject matter, date and condition of a Picasso drawing will determine how much it is worth. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer can give you an estimated value for a particular work. Find a collection of Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

Most of Picasso's paintings aren't in a single location. Of all the museums in the world, the Musée Picasso in Paris, France, has the largest number of his painted works. However, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, Spain, boasts the overall largest collection of his art, with more than 4,000 pieces that include paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and ceramics. The difference between Matisse and Picasso is that their work is associated with different art movements. Henri Matisse was a leading proponent of Fauvism, a movement whose name is derived from the French word for "wild beast.” Marked by vibrant hues, Fauvist paintings like Matisse’s famous 1906 composition Le Bonheur de vivre have wild, active brushstrokes and a palette unconstrained by nature, resulting in imagery like women with purple skin and trees with orange leaves. Although his work evolved over the course of his career, Pablo Picasso is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he is credited with founding with Georges Braque. In Cubist works, reality gets fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Shop a collection of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

To tell if a Picasso sketch is real, first compare the signature on your piece to images of authentic works shared by trusted online resources. Looking for any anomalies and learning about the various materials and techniques that the Spanish artist employed during the different phases of his career can also be helpful. If you know approximately when your sketch was likely produced, you can determine whether the materials and techniques are appropriate for that period. Because there are so many Picasso counterfeits on the market, you may wish to have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer perform a professional authentication. No one can say for sure how much The Seated Woman by Picasso is worth today. However, when it sold at a London auction in 2016, the painting fetched $63.4 million. The piece may be worth more today. Also called Femme Assise, the painting is an abstract portrait of Fernande Olivier that Picasso completed in 1909 while he and the model stayed in a village in the Spanish countryside. Pablo Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Find a collection of Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

How much Picasso's The Dream is worth today is unknown. However, the painting was sold to a private buyer for $155 million in 2013. The painting may be worth even more if sold again today. Also called Le Rêve, the painting is a portrait of Picasso's mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter. Her face is abstracted and stylized, giving it the character of an African mask. Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes.
