Pablo Picasso Art

Spanish, 1881-1973

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Artist: Pablo Picasso
The Deer, 1942 (Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon, B.336)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Greenwich, CT
The Deer is an aquatint and drypoint print on chine from one of the deluxe copies of Picasso's 1942 Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon series. The image size is 10.5 x 8.15 inches, unsigned as issued, and framed in a contemporary silver and gray moulding. One of about 36 prints that exist with Picasso's remarqued title in French, from the edition of 262 (there were 226 portfolios, some with additional sets on varying papers). Catalogue - Cramer #37 The exceptional etchings from Picasso’s Histoire Naturelle – Textes de Buffon are a masterful combination of sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint, showcasing a full range of gray tonalities. The etchings of animals, birds and insects are considered some of the most beautiful and most unusual examples of Picasso’s graphic work. Roger Lacourière, Picasso’s master printer, pulled the prints for each etching between 1939-1942. It was Lacourière who taught Picasso the sugar-lift aquatint technique which allowed him to mimic the effect of brushstrokes in these etched images. Picasso first explored the technique in his plates for the Vollard Suite, but it was in the creation of the Buffon images that he fully realized its stunning, painterly potential. For the edition, 226 portfolios were produced with the first thirty-six counting as deluxe compilations. These rare deluxe sets were on diverse papers (chine, japon or vergé ancien) and each included a complete additional suite showing Picasso’s title remarques along the bottom. As such, the remarqued versions of the prints are quite rare with just thirty-six of each produced for the edition (with the exception of The Wolf which is never remarqued – the image always fills the entire etching plate). These prints are based on the writings of French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who extensively documented the natural world in his monumental work Histoire Naturelle. Picasso’s association with the project to illustrate parts of the Buffon came during a tumultuous time in European history – the prelude to, and early years of, World War II. As the continent was ravaged, Picasso lived through the disaster in Paris, which the Germans occupied in 1940. These prints could be seen as a political statement – Picasso channeling his artistic expression into a form of resistance art...

Picasso Madoura Ceramic A.R. 182 Corrida
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Pablo Picasso A.R. 182 Corrida 1953 17” round Edition of 200 White earthenware clay, partially glazed. Ramie 182 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market. The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive. Small blemish on rim, see photo #3 for detail. The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece. We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews. We are located in the USA. When you buy from a foreign seller on 1stdibs, you have to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item. When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when you “win” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay the packing and shipping fees, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. When you purchase from an auction house, the sale is final. If you receive the piece and are not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing you can do about it. You are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer can determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! The prices of Picasso Madoura Ceramics have been on fire lately (no pun intended). The major auction houses – Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips – have now been regularly holding Picasso Madoura Ceramic auctions...

Paseo & Arrastro, from Service Scènes de Corrida (Set of 2), A.R.416 & A.R.423
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 and Arrastro A.R. 423 are numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Arrastro, from Service Scènes de Corrida, 1959 A.R. 423 features a victorious  bullfighter holding his curved sword, known as an estqoue, over his head. The dark atmosphere created by the deep blue, black, and touch of brown is slashed by the intense yellow down the center of the plate. This shock of bright color evokes the excitement of the bullfighter as he stands triumphant over the bull. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Paseo...

Picasso Madoura Ceramic A.R. 520 Fluffy-Haired Woman
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Pablo Picasso A.R. 520 Fluffy-Haired Woman 1964 13” x 10” Edition of 100 Red earthenware clay, printed with engobe pad Ramie 520 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market. The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive. This particular piece is pristine: there are no nicks, bruises or scratches of any kind. Be careful when buying from others – the pieces sometimes have nicks or scratches. The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece. We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews. The "Fluffy-Haired Woman" (Tête de femme, Cheveux bouclés) is a ceramic plate designed by Pablo Picasso and produced at the Madoura Pottery studio. This piece is part of Picasso's extensive work in ceramics during the mid-20th century, where he explored new forms of artistic expression beyond his renowned paintings and sculptures. Here are some key details about this particular piece: Title: Tête de femme, Cheveux bouclés (Fluffy-Haired Woman) Date: 1969 Edition: Ramie 520 Medium: Ceramic plate Dimensions: Approximately 26 cm (10.2 inches) in diameter Edition Size: Limited edition, often part of a numbered series The Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France, where this piece was produced, was a significant place for Picasso's ceramic work. He collaborated closely with the owners, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, to create a wide range of ceramics, including plates, vases, and pitchers, all featuring his distinctive artistic style. The "Fluffy-Haired Woman" plate is a representation of Picasso's playful and innovative approach to ceramics, combining his mastery of line and form with the unique qualities of the ceramic medium. Collectors and art enthusiasts highly value these pieces for their artistic significance and the insight they provide into Picasso's creative process. The Pigeon, 1942 (Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon, B.347)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Greenwich, CT
The Pigeon is an aquatint and drypoint print on chine from one of the deluxe copies of Picasso's 1942 Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon series. The image size is 10.75x 8 inches, unsigned as issued, and framed in a contemporary silver and gray moulding.

Questions About Pablo Picasso Art
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 4, 2024
How much Picasso's The Dream is worth today is unknown. However, the painting was sold to a private buyer for $155 million in 2013. The painting may be worth even more if sold again today. Also called Le Rêve, the painting is a portrait of Picasso's mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter. Her face is abstracted and stylized, giving it the character of an African mask. Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. Yes, some Picasso drawings are valuable. In terms of auction sales, Picasso is the top-grossing artist of all time. However, his paintings often sell for considerably more than his drawings, largely due to the fact that the prolific artist produced tens of thousands of sketches during his life. Generally, the subject matter, date and condition of a Picasso drawing will determine how much it is worth. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer can give you an estimated value for a particular work. Find a collection of Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

Most of Picasso's paintings aren't in a single location. Of all the museums in the world, the Musée Picasso in Paris, France, has the largest number of his painted works. However, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, Spain, boasts the overall largest collection of his art, with more than 4,000 pieces that include paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and ceramics. The meaning behind the Portrait of Dora Maar is subject to personal interpretation. However, many art historians believe the abstracted portrait represents the turmoil and emotional suffering people endured during the Spanish Civil War. Pablo Picasso witnessed the horrors of the war firsthand, and the experience likely influenced his work. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Pablo Picasso art.

To tell if a Picasso sketch is real, first compare the signature on your piece to images of authentic works shared by trusted online resources. Looking for any anomalies and learning about the various materials and techniques that the Spanish artist employed during the different phases of his career can also be helpful. If you know approximately when your sketch was likely produced, you can determine whether the materials and techniques are appropriate for that period. Because there are so many Picasso counterfeits on the market, you may wish to have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer perform a professional authentication. The difference between Matisse and Picasso is that their work is associated with different art movements. Henri Matisse was a leading proponent of Fauvism, a movement whose name is derived from the French word for "wild beast.” Marked by vibrant hues, Fauvist paintings like Matisse’s famous 1906 composition Le Bonheur de vivre have wild, active brushstrokes and a palette unconstrained by nature, resulting in imagery like women with purple skin and trees with orange leaves. Although his work evolved over the course of his career, Pablo Picasso is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he is credited with founding with Georges Braque. In Cubist works, reality gets fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Shop a collection of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

No one can say for sure how much The Seated Woman by Picasso is worth today. However, when it sold at a London auction in 2016, the painting fetched $63.4 million. The piece may be worth more today. Also called Femme Assise, the painting is an abstract portrait of Fernande Olivier that Picasso completed in 1909 while he and the model stayed in a village in the Spanish countryside. Pablo Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Find a collection of Pablo Picasso art on 1stDibs.

To tell if your Picasso painting is real, experts recommend taking it to a knowledgeable appraiser or art dealer. Unlike prints, which can be purchased on the secondary market, authentic Picasso paintings are rarely found outside the collections of museums and well-established private collectors. However, there are many convincing fakes in existence. Someone with training and experience will be best able to verify the artist's signature, the brushwork of the painting, the canvas, the frame and other features to determine its authenticity. How much a Pablo Picasso drawing is worth depends on its size, complexity, historical significance, condition and other factors. One of his drawings, Étreinte, done in white wax crayon and pencil on red paper, sold for $4.9 million, while a simpler pen and ink wash on paper called Baigneuse et cabine de bains fetched a selling price of more than $623,000. If you own a Picasso drawing, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer can evaluate the piece and provide you with its estimated fair market value. Picasso's most famous piece is arguably Guernica, which he created in 1937. A black-and-white oil painting, it captures the horrors of war with its depiction of the German bombing of Guernica, Spain. Another of his well-known works is Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. When it was produced in 1907, the painting was considered immoral and shocking for how it showed nude women whose faces resembled Iberian tribal masks. Other notable works by Picasso include The Old Guitarist, Le Rêve, The Weeping Woman and Girl Before a Mirror. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Pablo Picasso art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Pablo Picasso's style of artwork is called Cubism. This style of art was invented around 1907-08 by Pablo Picasso and Georges. Cubism is known for bringing multiple views of a subject together, resulting in fragmented and abstract painting.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Pablo Picasso is most famous for founding the Cubist movement, which uses several points of view and perspectives, creating a geometric-looking result. Cubism was considered a massive break from traditional methods of painting. One of Picasso's most famous cubist pieces is “Guernica,” the artist's representation of the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso lived in more than one place in France. In 1904, he moved to Paris and settled in the artist quarter of Montmartre. In 1936, he set up his studio at 7 rue des Grands-Augustins in Paris. During World War II, he briefly fled to the south of France but then returned to his Parisian studio in 1940 and remained there until 1955, when he relocated to a villa near Cannes called La Californie. After a brief stay in the French village of Vauvenargues, he finally moved to Mougins, where he lived until he passed away in 1973. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Pablo Picasso art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024
No, Pablo Picasso was not truly an abstract artist, in the opinion of experts. While he did help to shift art away from naturalistic forms toward abstraction with his Cubist pieces, most of his works weren't purely abstract. A good example of this is his well-known Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. In this painting, the female figures are abstracted, but you can still tell that the forms represent the human body. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Pablo Picasso art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024
Picasso's drawing style isn't called by any single name. He created more than 30,000 drawings throughout his life and experimented with different styles. As a result, you might call one of his drawings Neoclassical and another Expressionist, Surrealist or Cubist. Overall, you can refer to his drawings and other artwork as modern art due to the period of time when it was produced. Find a range of Pablo Picasso drawings and other art on 1stDibs.

Picasso's four art periods are called the Blue period, the Rose period, the African-influenced period and the Cubist period. The Blue period coincided with the turn of the 20th century and included works like The Old Guitarist and The Blue Room. As its name suggests, this period was marked by Picasso's use of shades of blues and greens, which instilled in his paintings a sense of melancholy. Around 1905, Picasso entered his Rose period, adopting a brighter palette of oranges and pinks. Significant works from this time include Autoportrait à la palette and Garçon à la pipe. Many experts point to the 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon as the start of Picasso's African-influenced period, during which Picasso employed a style inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces broken into geometric shards of surface planes. By the 1910s, this style had evolved into Cubism, with Picasso fragmenting his subjects into shapes. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Pablo Picasso art.
