One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Picasso illustrated these etching and aquatints as homage to the fascinating poem by Pierre Reverdy. Sable Mouvant (quicksand) is set in the desert and relates to a number of psychological struggles and hallucinations. The works by Picasso elegantly depict Reverdy’s intentions and remove the viewer from reality to expose the inner turmoil of a helpless man and his surroundings. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881. By the age of 15 he was already technically skilled in drawing and painting. Picasso’s highly original style continuously evolved throughout his long career, expanding the definition of what art could be. In addition to painting, he would explore sculpture, ceramics and other art forms, and become one of the most influential artists of the 1900s. Their bodies are slightly tilted at an angle facing one another while their gazes are more direct. This scene is reminiscent of the late classical Roman and Greek sculptures where busts are in profile and facial features are exceptionally contoured. Both figures have striking noses, strong lips, and detailed outlines of their eyes. These renderings allow for Picasso to convey the implication of an alluring romance or the very essence of an unspoken romance. Sensual is their body language; youthful and quite seductive are the curved lines. Picasso works the shawl around the woman on the right so that she holds tight to the only garment that covers her most sacred parts.
