Salvador Dalí Art

Spanish, 1904-1989

Instantly recognizable by his waxed, upturned mustache, the flamboyant Salvador Dalí is one of modern art’s most distinctive figures. He is also one of the icons of the 20th-century avant-garde Surrealist movement, whose dreamlike images, drawn from the depths of the unconscious, he deployed in paintings, sculptures, prints and fashion, as well as in film collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock.

Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, and even as a youngster, displayed the sensitivity, sharp perception and vivid imagination that would later define his artworks. In these, he conjured childhood memories and employed religious symbols and Freudian imagery like staircases, keys and dripping candles to create unexpected, often shocking pieces.

Dalí's use of hyperrealism in conveying Surrealist symbols and concepts that subvert accepted notions of reality is epitomized in what is perhaps his most recognizable painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), in which he depicts the fluidity of time through melting clocks, their forms inspired by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. His artistic genius, eccentric personality and eternal quest for fame made him a global celebrity.

“Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure,” he once said. “That of being Salvador Dalí.”

Questions About Salvador Dalí Art
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
How you can know if your Dalí is real depends on whether you have a painting or a print. For prints, one of the best ways to assess authenticity is to compare details, such as the position and size of the signature and the dimensions of the image, to information published in a well-researched catalogue of the artist's work, which you can find online and in some libraries. For paintings, you can compare the artist's signature with images shared on trusted online resources. Because there are many counterfeits of the Spanish artist's work, it is a good idea to get an expert opinion from a certified appraiser or experienced art dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a variety of Salvador Dalí art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024
The style of Salvador Dalí's art was Surrealist. In fact, he is one of the best-known icons of this 20th-century avant-garde art movement. Dalí employed dreamlike images, drawn from the depths of the unconscious, in his paintings, sculptures, prints and fashion, as well as in film collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock. Explore a variety of Salvador Dalí art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 8, 2024
The most famous painting by Salvador Dalí is arguably the Surrealist painting The Persistence of Memory. Produced in 1931, the piece depicts the fluidity of time through melting clocks, their forms inspired, Dalí stated, by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. Other famous works by Dalí include Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening, The Great Masturbator and The Temptation of Saint Anthony. What is unique about Salvador Dalí art is its dreamlike imagery, drawn from the depths of the unconscious. He used hyperrealism to convey Surrealist symbols and concepts that subvert accepted notions of reality. You can see this clearly reflected in what is perhaps his most recognizable painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), in which he depicts the fluidity of time through melting clocks, their forms inspired by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. Although the scene is one of fantasy, Dalí rendered each object in a manner that makes the elements look as lifelike and realistic as possible rather than abstracting their forms.
