Very detailed watercolor painting - note how light reflecting off the water surface was skillfully created by scratching the paper surface. Charles G(J)eorge Nicholls, originally a merchant seaman, was a contemporary of Thomas and William Daniell, and like them, he made several sketching trips whilst in India, including up the Dohab, which is from where this drawing appears to be of. He worked as draughtsman for the East India Company based in Calcutta and was also employed by the Office of the Surveyor-General, where he was involved in the Survey of Orissa, South Bengal. Unfortunately bad eyesight truncated his career and he returned to England in 1815. Nicholls signed his middle name’George’ using a ‘G’, aswell as a ‘J.’ Nicholl’s work surfaces from time to time and can command high prices at auction – especially for his Indian landscapes. For example, a drawing by Nicholls ( a page of an album) was auctioned by Sotheby's (Valuable Printed Books, June 1997, Lot 407), or a series of water coulours were auctioned by Christie's (Visions of India, June 1998) and in September 2000 two small drawings were auctioned again by Christie's (Exploration & Travel with Visions of India). Also, I know there is a unsigned water colour titled 'Bridge over the River Bama by Benares' in the collection of the Oriental & India Office Collections (OICO) at the British Library. Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann is well known and appreciated for her expressive genre scenes depicting children. Born in Görlitz, she worked in Berlin and moved on to Ödenburg, where she died. Important examples of her work are held in the Ödenburg Landesmuseum. A few words on condition: The painting has received slight sympathetic restoration - The partially frayed edges have been professionally relined with a narrow strip of new canvas for strength and then the canvas has been re-stretched on to the original stretcher, with the arms of the stretcher covering most of the newly attached strips of canvas. One of the arms of the stretcher has suffered slight worm damage in the past. That short section has been treated, stabilized and the restorer covered the unsightly area with a strip of the same canvas, which was used to reline the edges. The frame seems to be original (certainly early 20thC) - the corners have been re-glued, small areas have been retouched and minor sections of the molding are missing. New small woodblocks...

I am a member of the Citizen-Science-Project organized by Professor Doctor Beda Hofmann, head of Earth Sciences department, of the Natural History Museum of Berne, Switzerland, researching the strewn field of the Twannberg meteorite on the Plateau de Diesse in Switzerland. Every found meteorite is analyzed for its metallurgical composition, measured and inspected for inclusions in the oxidation crust, flow lines and other surface properties. The meteorite is given its unique number beginning with TW for ‘Twannberg’ and then returned in accordance with the agreement between the Cantone of Berne and the finder – Meaning all finds are shared, depending on weight and rarity. We search in all seasons a large area in the Bernese Jura up to about 1500 meters above sea with sophisticated metal detectors – sometimes in lovely pasture, other times we negotiate very steep, forested slopes taking considerable risks. Unfortunately, we get a huge number of false signals and dig up a considerable number of discarded and lost metal objects, such as horse and cow shoes, nails, bits of fencing, artillery fragments and bullets, rubbish, etc. To find one meteorite a searcher has to dig hundreds of false signals often in arduous conditions. Hence, we have only found 2000 individual specimens since 1984. Many finders hold on to their allocated meteorites, so few of those rare good quality specimens actually reach the open market. I am happy to pass on my larger meteorites, whilst I hold on to the small, gem quality Twannberg meteorites, which I plan to use for my new, upcoming jewelry collection. Not all specimens found are of the same quality. Being iron they are often heavily oxidized, become instable and start to crumble. However, a small percentage of meteorites fell into an area, where the acidic soil layer is very thin and sunk down on the more stable, alkaline lime gravel layer which makes up the Jura hills – virtually a more or less neutral zone. So, I would estimate about 10% of all meteorites are found, still retaining parts of their dark, outer crust after all those years. If it happens, that the spot is located high enough, i.e. out of reach of the glaciers which covered the area at least twice since the fall and mulled everything over in their path, the meteorite would wait unharmed patiently for over 150’000 years for someone to find it. If then, the meteorite is above average weight and it displays an attractive sculptured shape, we are talking about the absolute rarest possible type of Twannberg Meteorite, of which there were only a few hand full found. He was born into a world, where painting has been going through unprecedented upheavals for two decades. The Academies of Fine Arts are called into question, the traditional approach to subjects and genres is shaken up and recently, painters have been indulging in a revolutionary concept of light and color. New techniques and outdoor plein-air painting lead to a new style of painting. Tourillon was attracted early in his life to the fine art of painting. At a very young age, he rubbed shoulders with artists living in the Nouvelle Athènes district in Paris and was eventually apprenticed by Denis-Pierre Begeret (1846 - 1910), who recognized Tourillon’s extraordinary talent for detailed composition in still lifes and landscapes. Based in Lagny, Alfred Edouard Tourillon went on to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900 and 1901 and received plenty of recognition for his talent from collectors, as well as from his peers. In 1899, he received an honorable mention by "Le Salon des Artistes Français" in Paris for "Les Artichokes". This painting was later acquired by Baron Alphonse de Rothschild and is held today at the Museum of the city of Draguignan.
