This small detailed work made between 1890 and 1900 is skillfully painted representing a court lady in regal costumes being attended to by a small child carrying a bolt of silk cloth. This centered in a medallion where the raised decoration is heavily embellished with gold and patterned details. The round outer area is done in a cobalt blue with more goldwork designs and the interior of the box holds small painted objects as symbols of refinement and or beauty. The box is signed by the painter's hand but as yet we have not translated or matched it to a specific maker's work. Wares of this type are most often produced in the city of Kagoshima in Kyushu province during the Meiji period and reflects the export industry designed to cater to western tastes but not particularly bought by Japanese citizens. This daybed or sofa was made originally in France circa 1870 in the Napoleon III style and is constructed of walnut and burled walnut veneers used to dramatically show off the wood selection and grain patterns. Large profiles and massive flat or concave and convex long grained area of regular walnut have been used to border complex very figured areas of veneered burl walnut Boldly scaled and very masculine the original rail on one side has been removed and a permanent rail with a notched upper area in the head and foot boards to accommodate an upholstered wooden back which was clearly just screwed in in the past allowing for the use as a sofa in a guest room also used as a sitting room. This pair of candelabra made in France, circa 1880 are designed in the Renaissance Revival style. Well cast in a large number of separate parts and patinated and polished to create drama and decorative detail the pair is of a nice scale without being overly large. Cast as a central column raised on a pyramidal pierced base. The base is centered by grotesque masks and foliate sprays raised up on feet. The shaft leads up to four large branched arms also cast with corresponding foliate sprays issuing from more grotesques. The combination of color and casting create a lively play of light. The best was in the second and third quarters of the 19th century which is when this table was made. Constructed of walnut the table is designed to feel monumental without being of that scale. Set on four Quatrefoil column legs that rise to a shaped pierced arch that is centered on each side by a shield. The finish is old and excellent in color and sheen.
