Midcentury Rustic Solid Wood Coffee Table, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
In European midcentury design, there are some common elements that define the continent’s furniture design of the era. Most importantly, there was an early emphasis on wood as it connected everyday objects, such as furniture to nature. This rustic, solid wood coffee table is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. Mid-Century Modern represented a break with the traditional past: design-wise, furnishings were often a rejection of Victorian, Colonial, and other historical influences, especially the pseudo-historical use of ornamentation. In comparison, furniture of the 50s and 60s are generally more pared-down, smaller in scale, and uncluttered with unnecessary ornament: on this front, the movement shared qualities with the efforts of the Bauhaus designers’ vehement rejection of ornamentation. This coffee table has a strong elemental feel to it, which is a result of its thick table top and sturdy legs. The focus is on the Material, letting the beautiful qualities of the wood stand out. The circular pattern of the wood is the result of the trunk being used without cutting it into pieces, thus showing the tree’s year rings...

Brass Ceiling Lamp with Opal Shades by Itsu 'Attr.', Finland, ca 1950s
By Itsu
Located in Utrecht, NL
This uniquely decorated ceiling lamp was designed in an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser known manufactory that produced characteristic models in small quantities. By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light...

Sculptural Patinated Oak Spinning Chair, Europe Ca Early 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
The ‘spinning chair’, this historic type of seating has had numerous modern interpretations across Europe, however, most preserved the main functional characteristics: solid wood, enduring, high quality craftsmanship, a tall, straight back for good posture and freedom of movement. The art of spinning yarn is thousands of years old, but the spinning wheel as we know it is estimated to have arrived in Europe around the middle of the 13th century and along with it came the three or four-legged spinning chair. The backs were often hand carved with various motifs or fantasy creatures making each one unique and individual. As this oak chair shows, the Modernist movement influenced the traditional design by removing most of the intricate decorative elements, and substituting them with a more streamlined structure. The carved high back and octagonal seat...

Einar Johansen Stoneware Table Lamp for Søholm Stentøj Bornholm, Denmark 1960s
By Einar Johansen
Located in Utrecht, NL
This handmade 1960s table lamp was designed by the brilliant Danish artist, Einar Johansen, and produced by Søholm Stentøj (Søholm stoneware). The manufactory was one of the oldest and most revered names in Danish ceramics. It was founded in Rønne on the Baltic island of Bornholm in 1835, and produced ceramics until the factory closed in 1996. Johansen originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and that truly shows in his ceramic work as well. This table lamp has a beautiful ceramic body featuring a beautiful ceramic glaze in shades of white, brown, and blue, and a clear artistic touch. Two opposing sides feature a sculptural motif shaped like five fluted steps leading up to the neck. These showcase the colour variation and play of the glazed clay and provide plenty of visual interest. The flared neck has gently rounded edges, providing the perfect support for the shade. The classic bell shape of the shade is covered by a light fabric with trims that match the colour scheme of the glaze. The overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that is inspired by nature. This table lamp has a particularly lovely glaze, thick, deep, and full of colour nuances enhanced by the sculptural decorations. In the middle of the 20th century, Søholm produced a wide range of stoneware in various patterns and shapes. During that time, Einar Johansen was employed at the manufactory, and designed and created a wide range of stoneware, where his "blue series" is the most highly sought after by collectors today. Condition: In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The lamp has a newly produced shade. Dimensions: 13.77 in Ø x 25.19 in H 35 cm Ø x 64 cm H About the designer/manufacturer: Søholm was founded by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen in 1835. Herman Sonne Wolffsen ran the pottery until his death in 1887. Much of the production was then unsigned. The pottery was operated by Hans Ancher Wolffsen and his brother in 1887-1908 They adopted the popular Jugendstil with its often grotesque shapes. The raw material for the ceramics, clay, was found just outside the city limits and was of very high quality. The large clay pits provided material for many potters, faïence and terracotta factories as well as ceramists. Danish designer, Einar Johansen, was employed at Søholm in the period between 1958-1968, and designed several, beautiful stoneware and pottery, including his famous blue glazed stoneware. Johansen, created many wonderful designs for Søholm Stentøj as well as in his own studio. He originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but changed his mind and became a ceramicist. The classic Bornholm ceramics...

Stilnovo Brass and Glass Chandelier, Italy, 1950s
By Stilnovo
Located in Utrecht, NL
This characteristic Stilnovo chandelier is the definition of an eye-catching design. Decorative lighting is basically the fourth layer of illumination, the jewellery of the room. This lamp contains the impact of accent lighting with a one-of-a-kind structure. A well-chosen lighting piece can change the overall look of a room and how it feels to be in that room. Historically, chandeliers would hang in the foyer or dining room, however, nowadays, a chandelier is often placed in smaller rooms or even a bathroom to set the aesthetic impression of the space. This mid-century chandelier has an innovative look that is established by the unique geometry of the arms, the conical cluster, and the peculiar shape of the glass shades. This model’s design revolves around its ten opaline glass shades arranged uniquely on curved brass arms. The arms are in pairs, with five connecting points to the cluster. They are bent to cross each other at different heights with a strong curvature. Yet, the resulting structure isn’t chaotic, instead it is interesting and airy, highlighting the shape of the glass shades. The pressed spheres have slim “necks” letting through the light directly. The combination of brass and glass was especially characteristic of the mid-century era as the brass shines beautifully when the light is on. The black lacquered conical cluster is a clever addition as it serves as a focal point. To leave the focus on the body the canopy and the tubing are quite understated. As a result, the design is well-balanced. Stilnovo was the forerunner of innovative Italian lighting design, earning their models much recognition and often a place in museums. This unique chandelier leaves...

Giuseppe Scapinelli Extendable Dining Table for Angelini & Delneri, Brazil 1950s
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in Utrecht, NL
Giuseppe Scapinelli was known as a designer who successfully combined “the classic” with “the modern”, and this table stands as evidence. Scapinelli was a Brazilian designer from São Paulo who did not use any means of mass production. His furniture alternated and combined elements from Italian classicism, innovative aerodynamic lines, and biomorphic shapes. This rare circular table has an amazing construction that praises the firm, Angelini & Delneri. Upon first sight, this model is an elegant circular table made of beautifully grained wood. However, when the table is extended, the elaborate system is revealed by which the extra wooden leaves can be added to extend the length. The artisanal level craftsmanship is as stunning as the design itself, with traditional joinery techniques such as pegs and so-called ‘biscuit’ joints. Besides the extension system, the craftsmanship is also evident in every edge and angle, such as the legs’ curve and the ring strengthening them. This table is very successful at balancing large volumes with clean lines. The legs have rounded edges and are slightly splayed below the wooden ring. This memorable design is from a designer committed to pushing the boundaries of modernist design in Brazil. The form is functional and elegant with subtle flourishes like intricate wooden details and the evident emphasis on functionality. This dining table is a grand piece that will stand out and add character to any interior. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 47.24 in Ø x 28.34 in H 120 cm Ø x 72 cm H About the designer: Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in Reggio Emilia in Italy on the 2nd of July 1911 and was the 6th of thirteen sons. He graduated after studying architecture in 1941. However, just as his career was starting, it was abruptly interrupted by WW2, and he was forced to live in seclusion in an antique furniture shop...

Uno & Östen Kristiansson Brass Ceiling Light for Luxus AB Vittsjö, Sweden, 1960s
By Uno & Östen Kristiansson, Luxus Vittsjö
Located in Utrecht, NL
This marvellous, brass six-light ceiling light was created in what we now call “the golden age of Scandinavian design”. The period saw the revival of an elementary, undecorated visual language, emphasizing sleek design and craftsmanship as this Swedish model demonstrates. Uno & Östen Kristiansson’s present model has a brass body with six arms, each one holding a tubular white acrilyc shade on an elongated shade holder. Following the sleek shape of the shade holders, the rod and the arms uniting at the cluster have the same shape resulting in a sleek look with a contemporary edge. The structure is uncluttered so that the shades can stand out. The eye-catching brass body balances the minimalist look with the warmth the light creates. Thanks to the arrangement of the white acrylic shades, light is distributed evenly in all directions when switched on. The combination of materials, shapes, and textures creates this lamp’s modern, sleek design, a clear return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the flowing, organic lines of the reconstruction of the early 20th century. Defined by long, vertical lines, this model is uniquely stylish and guaranteed to stand out. In 1950, Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, which was situated in Vittsjö. In the 1950s, the collections were launched nationally in Sweden, and internationally across Europe. Swedish designers and brothers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, were particularly active from the 1950s to the 1970s in Sweden.
