Vintage Pair 1992 Signed Gregg Robinson Post Modern Geometric Abstract Paintings
Located in Atlanta, GA
A pair of large, vintage, circa 1992, signed and titled post modern style geometric abstract paintings by contemporary American artist Gregg Robinson (born 1948). In the artist's own words regarding his work, "The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin." Each painting is on canvas attached to a wood support and stretcher. They are currently wired to hand vertically, but could also be hung horizontally. From the Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery website, "Born in Seattle, Washington in 1948, Gregg Robinson attended Simon Fraser University and the University of Washington before studying at the Brooks Art Institute in California. Robinson’s precise, geometric style is most reminiscent of the classic modernism noted in the Bauhaus of the 1920’s. Robinson’s intent is to create strong, high contrast images dominated by black-on-light pattern and saturated primary colour. Robinson successfully blends the classic hard-edged abstraction of Mondrian with a romantic soft...

Louis Durot French Post War Artist Red Lips L'echauffeuse Sofa Settee Sculpture
By Louis Durot
Located in Atlanta, GA
A late 1970's, post modern or pop art sculptural settee sofa by French artist and scientist Louis Durot (b. 1939). - This is one of three works that I am offering through my 1stdibs storefront, HKFA. Search HKFA on 1stdibs, view my storefront and see the other two works by Louis Durot, a curvaceous blue armchair sculptural work of art / furniture and an oversized cowrie shell sofa settee sculptural work of art / furniture. - Mr. Durot describes his work, "I explore the abstraction of objects, to create art that provokes thought and curiosity." This is a pair of red hot lips! The Warmer - L'échauffeuse. Oversized, pouty, slightly parted and gorgeously stylized - this pair of lips is ready to blow you a kiss. The sculptural settee is constructed of a polymer / polyurethane foam of Mr. Durot's creation. There is some mottling to the surface and it exhibits some marks and scuffs. I believe that this is more of a sculptural work of art rather than a functional piece of furniture - however, it really is quite comfortable. When seated within the slightly parted lips, you are held by their pouty kiss. Mr. Durot holds several patents on polymers and polyurethanes. Mr. Durot was born in 1939. He and his family narrowly escaped certain death during World War II. Durot, living in hiding for many years, grew up in France. As a child in 1944 he molded toys for himself and the other children in their village from different shades of clay by the river near his home. From this beginning, Mr. Durot has been creating, sculpting and molding ever since. His school age years earned him a reputation of an 'enfant terrible' and in his own words "In my youth, I had to fight for my survival. In the village where I was hiding, we were kept in a barn with the goats and other livestock. I was very young and malnourished. And everything was a matter of strength. We had very little food, and as I was smaller than some of the other children I always got the last scraps. But when you are starving you have to fight to survive. When I grew up and started to go to school, I became unable to suffer discipline or take orders from anybody. And this is why I could never be employed. I have only been employed for six weeks in my life!" In 1960 Durot enrolled in the Facultie de Sciences to study math. It was in 1963 that Durot became interested in engineering and secured a position with Equipel. It was while employed by Equipel that he began to study organic chemistry...

Vintage Postmodern Vibe Aluminum and Stainless Sculptural Brancusi Style Table
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage post modern style high round table in aluminum and stainless steel. The round, stainless steel top is complemented by the brushed aluminum shaft. The sculptural design of the table upright is reminiscent of the abstract works of Constantin Brancusi, especially his Endless Column. From the artstory website, "Originally created in 1918, in Endless Column Brancusi references the axis mundi, or axis of the world, a concept crucial to the beliefs of many traditional cultures embodying the connection between heaven and earth. This focus reflected Brancusi's strong and persistent affinity for the sacred, cosmic, and mythical. Endless Column also treats another theme of Brancusi's work, the idea of infinity, here suggested by the repetition of identical rhomboid shapes." In this table, conical forms of varying height, upright and inverted, are combined to create the abstract design. The scale and presence of the table are quite impressive. The heavy table base provides a sturdy and reliable foundation. This high top table...

Louis Durot French Post War Artist Cowrie Shell Sofa Settee Sculpture in Polymer
By Louis Durot
Located in Atlanta, GA
A late 1970's, post modern or pop art sculptural settee sofa by French artist and scientist Louis Durot (b. 1939). - This is one of three works that I am offering through my 1stdibs storefront, HKFA. Search HKFA on 1stdibs, view my storefront and see the other two works by Louis Durot, a curvaceous blue armchair sculptural work of art / furniture and a L'Echasuffesuse red lip sofa settee sculptural work of art / furniture. - Mr. Durot describes his work, "I explore the abstraction of objects, to create art that provokes thought and curiosity." This is an oversized and stylized cowrie shell sofa settee. The settee is constructed of a polymer / polyurethane foam of Mr. Durot's creation. There is a hard 'shell' on the base that the softer polyurethane sits inside. The white surface exhibits some marks and scuffs. There are a couple small openings on the surface. I believe that this is more of a sculptural work of art rather than a functional piece of furniture - however, it really is quite comfortable. The couple very small tears in the covering allow air to escape and when seated on the cowrie shell, one sinks a bit lower than perhaps was intended. Powerful Hoi Lebadang Abstract Mid Century Lithograph Signed and Numbered
By Hoi Lebadang
Located in Atlanta, GA
A mid 20th century lithograph print by Vietnamese / French artist Hoi Lebadang (1921 - 2015) signed and numbered. The colors employed, shades of red, white and charcoal set against a golden yellow, signify warmth and richness. The abstract composition beckons further inspection. The techniques used for creating this work of art include an embossed area of the work where the paper surface is raised in an abstract design. This work is presented in its original frame. I knew nothing of the artist when I bought this work, I simply knew that it appealed to me. A quick search online revealed this fascinating biography on the artist that I hope you'll read and enjoy. This comes from the Outside Folk Gallery website, "War shaped the life of Lebadang (Lê Bá Đảng.) Sometimes called Hoi Lebadang, this painter’s experiences in colonial-era Vietnam and WWII-era France flow into his work. Working at the turning point between 19th-century bohemianism and 20th-century modernism, he existed in two worlds simultaneously. The path that brought Lebadang to France in 1939 and secured his place in art history is complex. Looking at his childhood, you would never guess that this young Vietnamese boy would have such an impact on the art world. After shortening his name in 1950 to Lebadang, he only used Hoi when making lithographs. In colonial-era Vietnam, the French ruled Vietnam from the 1880s until 1954; France beckoned like a beacon for art and culture. Lê Bá Đảng (surname, middle name, given name), born in 1921, grew up with his eyes fixed on France. He grew up in a middle-class peasant family and, after primary school, felt the pull to travel. Lebadang signed...

Alfano Dardari Large Midcentury Trompe L’oeil Still Life Oil Painting Framed
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stunning trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) mid 20th century Italian oil painting by artist Alfano Dardari. This work depicts the after effects of a late night. Gambling. Drinking. Smoking. Vice. And do you see a thread through all of this? I do. Mind you, it's my opinion but I'll happily share it with you. Memento Mori. Instead of defining it for you, I'll offer this description from the Tate in London: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. Closely related to the memento mori picture is the vanitas still life. In addition to the symbols of mortality these may include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods. The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity...

This work depicts a beautiful flower in a vase with a perfect little droplet of water resting ever so gently on a petal. James Schwabe Sterling Silver and Gemstone Lion Sculpture Mounted on Malachite
Located in Atlanta, GA
A sterling silver sculpted lion by late American artist James Schwabe (1918 - 2008) mounted onto malachite. The eyes of the lion are gemstone (possibly cabochon emerald) and there appear to be highlights in a golden metal. The sculpture is signed on the malachite, J. Schwabe and there looks to be a number under the signature. It has been postulated that Mr. Schwabe sold his jewelry in New York under the brand, Patrice and Realm. Mr. Schwabe did design jewelry and other pieces in precious metals and gemstones for Cartier. This sculpture depicts a fierce and cute lion, seated on its haunches with its green eyes wide open. The lion sits patiently on a block of malachite, enjoying a polished surface contrasted with the natural form. So if you still have a curio cabinet, then make some room on the top shelf for this work. And if you have a vanity, then I'm sure this work will look beautiful next to your collection of boxes...

Vintage 1992 Mimi Di Niscemi Signed Golden Dachshund Belt Buckle with Brown Eyes
Located in Atlanta, GA
A gorgeous and oh so adorable dachshund makes for an ultra chic belt buckle by none other than famed Italian designer Mimi di N. You're not seeing double, I have two of these fabulous buckles listed separetely so please view my storefront for the other listing. Just think, you could have two little dachshund cutie pies! This buckle exudes cuteness with those sweet brown eyes set against a glistening golden hue. All that is needed is your favorite belt so you can wrap this little cutie around your waist. But who is Princess Mimi di Niscemi, you ask? Good question. I found a lovely biography on the iconic designer which I’ll share with you. From the Buy My Gold website, “Mimi is an internationally known designer of women’s costume jewelry and is also often referred to as, Princess Mimi di Niscemi. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts and simultaneously worked part-time for a jewelry manufacturer who produced Schiaparelli jewelry. Her skills led to work with Dutch silversmith Rudolph Broom at the Wichita Art Association. She won a scholarship to the School of Applied Arts in Paris. In the 1950s, Mimi became a partner with Arnold Scaasi and produced pieces marked, ‘Jewels by Scaasi.’ In 1959 she joined Robert DeMario, then moved to the New York based bead house, ‘Brania’ where she made jewels marked “Brania/Mimi di N.” She opened her own jewelry firm in 1960 in New York City and appears to have retired in 1995 and no longer designs jewelry. Her original pieces are marked Mimi di N. with a more block-style Mimi di N mark. Best known for her inspired, unusual belt buckles and strips, her jewelry is dramatic, bold and elaborate often in byzantine style using gold and silver plating, enamel, rhinestones, glass cabochons, and simulated pearls. Mimi’s costume jewelry and accessories appeared on the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar in the 1960s and 70s. ‘Mimi di N’ belt buckles...

William Spratling Signed Sterling Silver Feather of Quetzalcoatal Taxco Bracelet
By William Spratling
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage, circa 1940s signed sterling silver bracelet by William Spratling. This design is called Feather of Quetzalcoatl. According to "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", by Phyllis Goddard, this bracelet was designed during William Spratling's first design period, 1931-1946. But first things first, who is Quetzalcoatl? According to this Wikipedia article, "The name Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Precious serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent". In the 17th century, Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and historian of the Nahua people, wrote, "Quetzalcoatl, in its literal sense, means 'serpent of precious feathers' but in the allegorical sense, 'wisest of men'."" Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town. Spratling was gay, but most accounts of his life mention this only indirectly if at all. Spratling amassed a large collection of Pre-Columbian figurines...
